I know that letting go of a belief is difficult, because people invest themselves in it, but we are in the 21st century where science already helped us to understand nature. We really don’t need superstitions from thousands of years ago to tell us how we should live today. The Torah, the Christian Bible and the Qur’an are just stories that were made up to create an identity for some people to unite and survive. They are not accounts of reality. They are as real as the Epic of Gilgamesh. Weak up.

For Kugel to be correct, Bible critics need to possess a reliable tool for measuring truth and falsehood. Bible critics have spent centuries searching in vain for such an epistemic foundation, so Kugel's "refutation" of tradition is actually built on nothing. If Kugel really wishes to find refutations of tradition, I suggest he review the challenges offered by Job and Qohelet.

The trouble with David Ross's idea is the fact that Jews do not have a central theological authority to introduce official modifications to their ancient covenant. If the Jews had a "Pope" they might ask her to make these changes, but Jews have no Pope.

What a respectful and thought provoking debate on Gay Marriage. As a gay person who is converting to Judaism I feel this is the perfect way to debate such issue. I respect all sides, especially the Orthodox Rabbis view as it is not easy to stay calm and level headed when you truly believe in something that goes against the grain. For me, it makes sense; gay people should be allowed to express their love just as much as heterosexual people can. At the end of the day, love is love and is a precious gift from God so why should we not celebrate it when it involves two consenting adults?
