I am from this place but I left in 1989 and never returned except on a couple of visits. The village itself is just one big hotel now and many mountain tops have had their trees removed for more and more winter skiing pistes. Not sure what the future will hold for this place. If you want real Austrian flare you probably better off on the immediate border region on the Italian side, about 7 hours foot march from Mayrhofen, there are still places with hardly any tourism, the area around Sterzing.
I first visited Mayrhofen in 1971 on a school skiing trip, and have been almost every year since then. I see a massive difference to what it was in the 70's. Too commercialised now for me, but still very stunning! Levi in Finland is now the place for me, as it's not yet so commercialised.
