Agreed - the D-Techs are novel and unique, but as you said, they spin too quickly for any real color definition. I do like what @elightbars did, with the variable speed motor and slowing it way down. This was back in the day when Code 3 was novel and innovative - things like the intersection/pursuit sweeps, tactical takedowns, the ArrowStik (I believe that was the first directional bar...)
Complimenti. Saluti dalla Svizzera. 👍💪
I have a similar light bar I inherited when my dad passed. It has 3 amber lights on each end with 2 red in center. Can you tell me how much it’s worth?
The value for these is generally around $50-80 if they work. It depends on the specific brand and model to give a better estimate, but the vast majority fall into that rage.
I get sad when I see a Tomar Heliobe. Early on in my collecting, about 10 years ago, I bought 4 or 5 different light bars from an auction across the country. They were able to individually ship me each of them, except for the single Helilobe because it was too big for the boxes they had. I think it was about 5 feet long. Unfortunately, I have never seen another one listed from the places I bought from since.😢
Do not do that. LED bulbs will not work as warning, and the motors are not upgradable. LED bulbs for display are okay if you want, but it won’t flash with a “pop” they way it’s designed to. The motors are specific to the light and are not interchangeable with any other motor without extreme modification.
@@doranbaltus I believe led's would because all they are is smaller head lights. Compared to the original motors the motors of today are much more efficient and it's like changing a light bulbs. Take one motor out and put new motor in, simple! I'm also considering projector lamps.Calm down and breath I don't want to change the basic configuration of the light bar.
@@SgtkodeI’m telling you that LED bulbs will not work due to the way LEDs cast light. LEDs cast light in one single direction, and there’s no central focal point as there is in a filament bulb, so there is no “pop” within the flash that will occur due to there being no focused focal point of light. This applies to any replacement LED bulbs you could put into the original fixtures. And the motors are specific to the gears and gear cage, so they are not readily replacing without heavy modification. And don’t tell me to calm down. I’m not uncalm. You just have a bad idea and I’m telling you it’s a bad idea. Don’t get mad that someone is disagreeing with you.
@@doranbaltus I'm not mad at all. I have yet to hear you say you tried it. Do you know there are millions of emergency vehicle's with LED light bars. Don't tell me something won't work until I try it.
@@Sgtkode I’ve seen multiple people try it and I’ve dealt with it in person multiple times in a variety of applications. I speak from a place of knowledge and experience when I say it won’t work. Comparing retrofitted rotating lights with LED-designed lightbars is a false equivalency, because rotating lightbars were not designed for LED lights, and LED lightbars were specifically designed for LEDs.
So i have this exact same bar but center has two led modules that are red, i want to know what wires control what patterns on thr cord. Any info is highly appreciated!
That bar is at least 25 years old, and still one of the badassedst & brightest lights ever made, just hate the Jetsonic platform.. I wanted one then still love it. But have a freedom IV we can and bright enough just not as cool.
The Jet platform is a love it or hate it sort of platform, but I think that Tomar did an exceptional job using it correctly. I certainly think it's worlds better than the JetStrobe, which was so-so as a lightbar. Also, the drag created by the bar is less than every other bar ever produced, which is great for your MPG.
For restoration, you'd want to speak to Gary Cahill at Rescue Market (dot com). He's the best in the business for restoration, and can do far more than I can do.
Better than the loose puzzle pieces with random colours car most other departments seem to use for autism awareness. This one is actually not hideous. And the colour is in proper sequence.
Never could figure out why the inner rotators are at a fast speed than the outers. Federal Signals was the same way with their Streethawks. I would much rather the faster rotators be on the outside and actually reversed them on my Streethawk to be more effective when clearing an intersection since I want more lighting.
Slower rotators have a better "dwell time," which enables the human eye to more effectively track the vehicle, without the eye becoming overwhelmed. The outer standard rotators effectively establish the dimensions of the vehicle from all angles, while the inner rotators don't have that responsibility, and can be faster in order to create a more urgent front/rear facing warning signal. When used together, you get both a good steady signal that's easy to track with they eye, and a good front/rear fast signal that conveys urgency. If you really want good intersection lighting, you're not going to get it on a lightbar unless it's mounted on your front bumper. With that being said, you could get StreetHawk intersection lights (DynaRays), or do the easier thing and put strobes in your outer front turn signals.
I remember the police department in my town used these light bars in the early to mid ‘80s. I noticed that the stingrays would sometimes stop oscillating but when they did work you could hear them operating while standing outside the unit. They were also loud inside.
i have seen one in person, these are insanely bright, the modern led ones are bright but these are much much brighter, but for such a short period of time, even so its absolutely blinding with all the strobes on the rythmic sound of the arc tubes is really interesting and somewhat relaxing
These lightbars might have that strobe "pop," but their design and weak power supplies make them useless in real world applications when they are faced with any sort of sunlight, or when the lower level halogen lights are on; the strobes get entirely washed out. Even the almost-as-bad strobe Code 3 MX7000 isn't quite as bad.
@@dylandorbuck2574 much brighter, but they’re entirely different generations of strobes. The 8000 was the best available at the time they were produced, but the Vista Strobe was among the worst available at the time they were produced.
Every function is individually wired. The only "smart" parts are the StingRay multifunction rotators, which are controlled via 3 input wires that feed into a small control box, and are triggered via wire position sensors on the base of the rotator.
