In a system like the world is in today, where we work to earn money and buy our survival with it. It makes sense that everything else is provided for us by the massive consumer industries since we don't have time to work our own food/farm. More people also means greater demand. Therefore all the production processes need to be optimized and maximized since it would be impossible to provide for the world if you would be doing it like a thousand years ago :)
