I remember this race, Guts was off for quite a while and when I had seen that he was racing again I got in my car and headed to the Pegasus and was rewarded for it!! Would love to see any races with Skipper Dexter the great mare or a trotter named Some Dyan! Thanks again for sharing all the old memories of the original Meadowlands!
In my opinion I feel Mike Smith is the most talented jockey I watched , Stewart Elliot always will be my favorite and that 2004 derby. But Calvin Borail derby wins have to rank in the top 3 ever and I mean only secretariat ranks above. This guy is born in Louisiana with nothing, girlfriend at this time was helping him to read and write better as really couldn’t . He used to love to bring his horse in the kitchen to dinner with his mama. Man loves to ride horses and always does his way
What a fun mecca in my youth.First 2 years of junior college spent out that way.In alot of ways I wished I had learned more of horsemanship in a practical sense.So sorry at what has occurred to the entire industry.
I did not see Niatross, but I did witness the first race of Somebeach in Grand River, Ontario, Canada. He was not even the favourite - favourite took the lead and Somebeach just came charging at the half and no contest total destruction. I was left in awe but I didn't realize how good he would be. I think the ownership group got offers right then for this horse. It was Grand River day, got autographs from drivers, Pat and Phil Hudon trash talking each other while I got both their autographs (pretty funny). And they had a nice grey horse Admirals Express to show - kids liked that part. Horse so nice and gentle. And I believe won over $2 mil in his career back in early 2000's when it meant something.
Saw Gary win on a VERY improbable longshot one night at Yonkers in the slop with barely any prior form...went to the winners circle and yelled "Hey Gary, you like Fu***ing people out of their money huh? " he looked at me and said yeah, and I make a good living at it "...major league sc&&mbag.
and some years later that driver, henri filion...herves brother engineered one of the biggest fixed races at Yonkers raceway...the infamous Falcons mann race, where he stiffed pan am sam ..Leo Bauer , WHO WON THE RACE TESTIFIED, and never really got any more drives after that. hmmmmm, such an honorable "sport"....
I think what’s equally impressive here is the fact that Yonkers Raceway had multiple camera angles in 1966. Most race tracks even in 2010 did not have a backstretch camera which they included in their feed. Even though every track has a camera in a tower back there for the judges view. I never understood why they did not switch between camera angles in the backstretch. It would’ve been nice to see a different angle of the race when watching.
