Madrones are easy to transplant from the wild. Just find small ones, dig out the entire root system. don't clean the roots-take it all including the dirt. then take an extra bucket of native soil to use as the potting medium. after potting, cover with heavy fir mulch. they like sandy/loamy soil. keep them potted for a couple years before working with them and dont let them dry out, moist but not saturated.

I just collected 5 madrone saplings this past weekend and am hoping to grow them in a pot and eventually bonsai like you. I have one large one which is about 4 inches tall and the other four are very small, only half an inch tall. Wondering if you could share more about what you are doing to keep them alive as there is not much info online. I watched your other video and am planning to water once a month in summer but not sure what to do for the rest of the year. I am in Seattle (collected trees from northern WA) so will have pretty different weather than you but hopefully most of what you have done will transfer.

Hello, thanks for watching. I moved this past year, and I brought this tree to my new farm I’m making… my goats actually ate this poor little tree that I had for several years, so now it is no more… however, the property I moved to has at least 50 ma drones growing on it, so I am just going to make do with that. Just remember, these trees don’t need a ton of water, and they hate having their roots disturbed. I’ll be impressed if you get 1 or your 5 to survive in a pot.

@@TheFrogfeeder Darn, sorry to hear that the goats got to it. Thanks for the info, I'm planning to try and follow the natural rain cycle and since I live near where the tree was collected, I hope that it will be similar enough. I was somewhat expecting them to immediately die so seeing as they have made it two weeks gives me a bit of hope (just a bit though haha).

@@kir13y8 it’s very important to pot them in native soil, not potting soil. The consensus is that there is a specific fungi in the soil that the trees need.
@kir13y8
@kir13y8 11 месяцев назад
Yeah I did a bunch of reading before I collected them and it said that the fungi is called Myccorhizae. I dug up a very large area around the tree to not disturb the roots and then took extra soil to add to the pot. I eventually want to make one into a bonsai but for this first trial, I just want it to survive in a large pot. Many of the members at the bonsai club I am in have also tried madrone trees but nobody has had success yet.
@TheFrogfeeder
@TheFrogfeeder 11 месяцев назад
@@kir13y8 mycorrhiza fungi is a broad term, mycorrhiza just means there’s a relationship between a fungi and a plant. I’m of the opinion that madrones need pine needle compost and whatever specific fungi that uses pine needle compost… I personally have never seen a madrone growing in ground that is not covered in pine needles. My property is low foothill oak forest in northern ca, very dry , poor decomposed granite/sandy soil, and almost entirely various types and hybrids of valley, live, and black oaks, there are a few huge ponderosa pines here, and that’s where the madrones are growing, under or very near the pines. I only had my potted tree for around 5 or 6 years(I forget) before the goats got it, now that is definitely not to be considered long term success, but it’s the longest I ever heard of ;) You should see a manzanita I found here, it’s the biggest I ever seen, the trunk is about 24+ inches thick at the base, and it’s already got perfect shape/symmetry and some really nice nebari and fed wood, it’s like a giant natural bonsai, I’m currently making a little chill spot around it with one of my ponderosa pines, cutting it into logs that circle the tree with benches chainsawed into the logs. I’ll make a video for it when it’s done… this property is actually like a giant bonsai forest, lots of amazing trees…

I have not repotted this tree ever, it’s still alive, it’s about 2 inches thick at the base now and still has pretty much the exact same branching and structure as in this video. Hey there! First, those.coils.are likely just fine. The blue OMC coils are typically pretty good ones. It looks like your points for the bottom cylinder have the leaf spring out from behind the tab on the fixed half of the points. The leaf spring should be on the inside of the vertical tab and held there by that copper colored clip. That may be why that set of points feels loose. It doesn't look like it is holding the points closed like it should. Compare where the spring is on the set for the top cylinder to see how the spring is supposed to sit. Let me know if you need any more clarification. 👍

Yeah I finally saw that same thing. Was gonna change it out with one from my 18hp Johnson that is now junk cause a bolt broke. When I was taking it apart on the 18hp, I noticed the little keeper clip that is missing on the 20. Fixed it right up but it got dark, so tomoro I’ll see how she runs. Also ran some fine sandpaper between both points to clean em up a bit.

@@TheFrogfeeder Glad you got the points fixed on the 20hp. The large bolt that holds the gearcase on broke on the 18? I assume it twisted off while trying to loosen it. That can be saved. I had that happen recently myself on a '58 Johnson 18. Some Kroil soaked for a couple days and then I welded a hex nut on the end. On the second try it started to move and I was able to work the broken part out of the hole. Those 18s are awesome motors. It's worth trying to save it. 👍

@@oldjohnnyrude8404 man I wish my 18 was that easy, the aluminum around the bolt had a very slight hairline crack, and I guess over the years corrosion set in... the entire side of the bolt hole just crumbled, and the bolt head broke off. I was digging at the “aluminum” with my fingernail, but I think it was mostly just corrosion. All under the crack and wasn’t visible from the outside. So now you can see about 50% of the rusty bolt stuck in the good aluminum on the opposite side of the bolt hole...I’d have to cut all the corrosion out and recast the piece! Hey thanks for watching! Glad to see I’m reaching SOMEone ;) Only progress so far is that I’ve cut out the inner transom to get to the wood, chipped out all the rotten plywood there, and now I’m ready to put new wood and fiberglass it back up. I’ll try to remember to do a video, but it’s gonna be a couple weeks because a neighbor and now the city is giving me grief over having 2 boats...currently fighting a $1000 fine for “running a boat repair shop”... absolute ridiculousness... I have this thing, an aluminum fishing boat and 3 outboards that can go on either vessel... some boat shop huh?
@TheFrogfeeder
@TheFrogfeeder 3 года назад
As a side note on the handle bars... my plan is to figure out a way to get a bicycle head bracket onto the steering drum shaft so I can use either bicycle handlebars or even some huge ape hangers I have from a old motorcycle. Shouldn’t be too hard...then for the throttle, my PLAN is to try just a motorcycle twist throttle, but I’ll need to rig up a return spring on the motor end. Also adding a lanyard kill switch in place of the original toggle(I think this is VERY important in as much as I don’t want a 28 hp outboard running over the top of me if I fall off...)
@TheFrogfeeder
@TheFrogfeeder 3 года назад
The motor that on this pic in this video has some kind of throttle return spring mechanism, I’m not sure if that’s from Barracuda or from Johnson, the motor in the video is older than the Barracuda and not a motor that would have been commonly used for these boats.. the mechanism looks like it still works, maybe need a new spring, I’m hoping I can just remove and use on a different motor instead of having to diy it.

I recon someone at some stage has broken the bars on mine and put a normal boat steering wheel on it. Would you be able to send me some photos of how the handle bars a set up. Mainly the parts underneath. I am sure it must have a different size spool under as the handle bars have less turn than the steering wheel. I am currently working with a 6 hp Evinrude 2 stroke motor. (I am looking for something bigger) but not too many 2 stroke short shafts about. Thanks!!
@TheFrogfeeder
@TheFrogfeeder 3 года назад
@@petersimpson6451 the original steering setup is very simple. The drum at the bottom with a shaft going up to the handles. They just slid a piece of round tubing over the shaft and used 2 locking screws to hold in place, then welded the handle bars to the top of that tube. It’s very simple setup, and should be fairly easy to change. I’ve seen pics of a couple that have the steering wheels, and some of them DID come that way, and those ones all have a throttle cable box added, and it’s mounted on the starboard side across from the shifter handle. The drum under neath for the cables is about 10-12 inch diameter. I can make a quick little video for you later. As a side note...lol a 6 hp motor on this boat is not gonna be very fun, if that’s all you can get then that’s all you can get, but if that was the case, for me, I don’t think I’d even bother with a restoration. try to find at least 20hp, 25 would be better, this weekend i might get a 1966 33hp Evinrude for my barracuda, traded for my 1969 25hp Johnson(which would be a motor these things came with or were most popular for. Old JohnnyRude hey I’m back to messing with the 28hp speeditwin. 1962. It has an apparatus called a locking lever that goes from like the cam roller to the flywheel, what is that all about, I haven’t seen that yet. I had the motor running good, sat for 3 weeks while I built my boat, started it up today and the my tank ran out of gas, after switching tanks she won’t start back up now. I never cleaned the carb on it so I’m doing that, it was a running engine when I got it, albeit it had been sitting for several years. Anyways, back to the beginning with it I guess, just curious about that locking lever linkage and what it’s for?
@oldjohnnyrude8404
@oldjohnnyrude8404 4 года назад
@@TheFrogfeeder That locking lever apparatus is the fuel saver. I can't properly describe the setup of that system from ground zero but mark where the adjustment is set at currently if to end up taking it apart. If needed I may be able to look that procedure up in my Johnson Tenth Edition manual. In any case that system is used on the larger displacement motors like your 28hp and larger. It is meant to fully open the throttle at full timing advance to get on plane. Once the boat is on plane you can back the throttle lever off slightly and reduce the throttle valve opening to around half throttle, but maintain the timing advance of near full throttle. This allows for a cruising speed to keep the boat on plabe but reduces fuel consumption by about 30%. It works quite well and definitely saves fuel over running wide open without losing a while lot of speed on plane.
@TheFrogfeeder
@TheFrogfeeder 4 года назад
Old JohnnyRude that a great explanation, thankyou. I didn’t have to mess with it...yet. But at least now I know what it is and does. Hopefully it’s adjusted correctly already... Just got the carb and fuel pump cleaned out and put back together and reinstalled, lots of crap in the pump... new fuel lines, in-line filters, the seal for the glass bowl broke, so now I’m waiting for some sealant to dry, then she should run. Lots of stuff came out the pump... I ordered a fuel pump off amazon, the pump and diaphragm for this one is NOT available so it’s a different part and #, but it’s got the pulse input and fuel in/out, so it won’t bolt up I’ll just have to zip tie it somewhere... hopefully it’ll work, I don’t see why not, it’s the pump for the bigger size motors but newer ones. Edit: I’m assuming the locking lever thingamabobber works automatically without me having to do anything except back off throttle once on plane? Then, I’m guessing if you back off to a certain point it disengages itself?

John Farinella they don’t like their roots disturbed. I would wait until next winter/off season to dig it out so it’s dormant. Don’t be too hard on the roots, dig a huge plug out when you take the tree. And plant it back in the same soil, that’s probably most important. I need to repot mine but I’m very nervous about doing it... I am by no means an expert, honestly I just leave mine alone for the most part, water every 2 weeks or so and sometimes I give it duck water or compost tea once or twice a summer...

BuDDaH MAyNe this is a frogfish, or angler fish, you know the ones with a little “fishing rod” on there heads like in Finding Nemo...I used to breed them and sell the babies to local aquarium shops. This was my first successful attemp. It’s not actually breeding, the females would almost always come in pregnant(gravid, eggs..) and I finally figured out how to incubate and raise the fry.

Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone I feel like a rockstar when you reply to my comments on your vids, you looking at my vid and leaving a comment is the best Christmas present this year for me, thanks! I am in love with these ma drones, I live close to the collection site which is my buddies property. There’s lots of nice old gnarled manzanita there that I want to try as well. I have a bunch of small prebonsais I get from a localism nursery, but my favorites are all my carefully collected ones, I have several and so far only success with them, even more so than my nursery ones. Anyways, happy holidays Nigel
