You failed to tell what type hats they were. The one with the 3 pleat white hat ban was a tall crown Pork Pie in gray. The second was a tall crown Fedora also gray. Sinatra liked hats that made him appear taller. Another reason he liked them tilted back to give more height. I think I know more about his choices.

Civil war style hat cords are available at any Civil War sutler. Gold is for General Officers. Knots are not exclusively combat. 1st Cavalry Division policy on knots allows them for anyone
Your videos are just great. I am learning to shape hats using ones I have found second hand at Good Will etc. I have a Stetson gambler think came out real well and a really low rent Justin 4x cattleman crease hat that was battered badly. I steamed it looking for a cav hat look (I was in the 2d Cav) but I am going to try a heat gun since it is tough to change the original l shape - needs more work. Someday I hope to visit your store...
They are more or less the same thing.. The crease was originally called a Montana but due to the success of the mini-series, Lonesome Dove (1989) in which a character named Augustus McCrae wore a version of the Montana crease, that particular style is now commonly referred to as a 'Gus'.
I love your video. I like that first hat you shaped. What is the style of that hat? Did you say 'Calvary' hat? What is the brim size? What high is the crown?
I re-creased my black Stetson Rancher into a Gus. It looks better now. That tall cattleman crease had to go. It made me look like John Travolta in Urban Cowboy. :(
