Lovely. I don’t know if Ms Croft is a bad person- she’s the only one who seemed to care about Childie’s well being, self-serving or not. She also was the only one who answered in a straightforward manner George’s burning questions: Will Sister George be killed off and if so, when?
i’ve always wondered how the mum died. she seemed very depressed so not sure if it was an illness or suicide. morbid i know but it has bugged me since 1987.
Have we all been LOST IN A DREAM ? BEWARE POSSIBLE FANTASY . . . That last simple scene of Linda on her bike with that innocent windmill . . . Is she really just a daydreaming strict Catholic girl - loved by her family , but is too frustrated and naive Are her insults just learned behaviour - and why does she not know any real swearing ? Did she have all those rubbish jobs - or will she really be off to Oxbridge universities ? Have all men really let her down ? Did she really have that baby ? Was Linda just maintaining the lies to keep that status-quo ? What do YOU think ? . . .
George is a classic depiction of a Narcissist with sadistic traits. The ritual with the cigar is clearly her getting a kick out of sexual and emotional dominance.
For all her faults she is the only character who is authentic and true to herself - the others are double-dealing and back-stabbing and desert her when she is no longer useful to them. The movie has something in common with “Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Wolf” with its themes of (self) delusion and complicated, brittle, co-dependent relationships. Ultimately, her own true friend is her prostitute neighbour.
@veracity52 Thanks for posting this classic film!! A pity Coral Browne/Susannah York sex scene was cut...but Beryl Reid is a wonder!! Even though the film is terribly dated, I still found it fascinating in that Robert Aldrich way!!
A wonderful sensitive film. Feel sorry for Linda, her Mum dying when she was a child, and being left with a cold father. No wonder she rebelled. Beneath that though, she just wanted love.😢 But film has plenty of humour for balance. Great stuff.
Fantastic movie, Aldrich did a wonderful job, keeping Beryl Reid and giving everybody ample and i assume total free range to show their craft. Reid, Coral Browne, Susannah York are fantastic, but so is the rest of the cast from the whole tv-crew and actors, to wonderful Patricia medina and her "understudy" and everybody down to the last extra in the amazing club scene. Riveting stuff. and the score and photography, script five stars.
One of the most underrated movies ever, whole cast should have had Academy awards like two years running. And Robert Aldrich, bless his heart, for letting these actresses have all the room hey needed.
That poor dancing lady at the end. Most likely walking back to her furnished room with the pittance she earns from sympathetic holiday makers and day trippers to spend another lonely evening before doing it all again tomorrow for more pittance.Bless her,I know it’s only a film but I’ve felt sorry for that lady for 35 years
Now why would her dad immediately believe the tell-tale-tit of a sister like that? He's only just back home after years away, so he can't know her to have "form". And who's he to be lecturing Lynda anyway? He's a bogus hypocrite himself, with his illicit bookmaking.
But she may not have really had that child ! Her father may have been a kind religious guy - so the scene may not have been necessary for Linda to have made it up. Cynthia Payne probably had a decent father - so she became frustrated with conformity.
the dad was typical of that era. he went to war, came back not knowing his daughters and had no idea or sympathy and never considered the fact they lost their mum. brought another woman into the house who had no time for them. all she really needed was a bit of love and affection. no wonder she acted up. any attention is attention.
