I am pretty sure Grip was printed with standard offset lithography, there is none of the diffusion patterns you get with riso, there are nonplat offset errors and the list the PMS colors in the back. What this really shows is that offset litho can be even sexier than riso if you use custom PMS colors and prepare your seperations wisely. Such inspiring work.
Great art, nice video 🥰 I’ve got a French edition of Grip ❤ Did you ever come across that Grand Electric Thought Power Mother book ? I had it preordered for the longest time but it cancelled itself automatically ? 😢 So bummed out about that because I really love her work! ❤ I’ll probably also make one of my RU-vid shorts about her comics, she deserves more videos! 🤓
Grand Electric is still coming out, but there's been a change of publisher, so now it'll be coming out from Perfectly Acceptable press (soonish I think?)
Dolly Zoom, I think it was developed by Hitchcock and was used to great effect in Vertigo. My favorite version of it (as in the one that imprinted on me as a child) is from Jaws.
Fun fact: 'Hakken' is the Dutch word for 'chopping' but also for a techno/rave genre in the Netherlands in the nineties. Svetoft was inspired by the subculture and used it for this book. IMHO: Erik Svetoft is one of the most inspiring contemporary cartoonist in Europe.
I am not sure if it has already been asked but, have you guys checked out the Epson Expression 13000xl Archival scanner? And if so what are your thoughts on it?
@@MichaelDaFonte I havent tried it yet but the 10000xl 11000xl and 12000xl are all optically identical and are the best scanners ever manufactured. I believe the 1300oxl is identical and if so, it's hot stuff!
I actually just recently found a copy of Orion and it's pretty nuts, but in an inspiring way. Really enjoy these discussions and might try some of this stuff myself now.
Agreed with everything you said about Hickman's exposition and graphic design. What initially felt like a cool novelty, quickly became tiresome. It really feels like he is limited by very basic graphic design skills that he learned many years ago and just hasnt bothered to evolve. He also doesn't allow the reader to get into a groove while reading his stories. It's kinda analogous to something like Nier in the video game space. Just as you settle down thinking you are playing third person hack and slash game, you are promptly forced to play a side scroller platforming section, a top down shoot em up or read an entire prose passage. This is fine conceptually as a diversity flex, but it doesnt translate well into an audience feeling any sort of traction and connection with the experience. They are being forced to engage in multiple ways and thats often uncomfortable. Imagine sitting down to eat with the full expectation that you can relax and enjoy your meal, but after every three mouthfuls you need to drink and then do a workout before coming back to continue eating.
'Web of Horror' was published by Major Magazines, best remembered for the long-running 'Cracked Mazagine' (the only 'Mad' imitator still standing when Bill Gaines died). They did a monster humor magazine, 'Monster Howls' in 1966 with a lot of the 'Cracked' regulars, including EC veteran John Severin who, surprisingly, they did not tap for anything in 'Web of Horror'. A later 'Cracked' publisher, Globe Communications, tried again with 'Monsters Attack!', which did use 'Cracked' talent plus people like Gray Morrow and Gene Colan.
I'm definitely going to place an order for this new book at my LCS here in Charlotte, NC. "Heroes Aren't Hard To Find" (Although they may force me to consider Rebel Base Comics instead if they don't get their dismal parking situation sorted out). I'm just grousing a bit, but still, let me tell you something cool that Heroes did for me. I successfully placed and collected an order for Moonray book 1 a good while back, but completely spaced on the release date for book 2 or placing an order for it beforehand. Release day comes and I get a call from them. "We know you bought book 1 of Moonray and book 2 just released today. We have a copy put aside for you if you want to come by the store and get it." I was blown away that they did that. I went almost immediately (it was a work day). I loved them for that. (Definitely need to get that parking situation sorted, though.) You should come to Charlotte for Heroes Con. It's the convention they organize in the heart of the city. Jim Rugg is there pretty regularly too and it would be great to finally meet you (I have a LOT of your books to sign).
It was a good series. Art was cool. Hero had a lot of hope even though her world falls apart. Thought it was going to be a woke book. Crazy action. I enjoyed Some of the stuff is hard to make out but it is a good story.
It seems pretty clear that Remender is a middle-person, sick of the bullshit from both extremes. I think he is one of the best myth-makers we have at the moment.
Bummer. It did feel like a great idea that didn't relate to the content as well as it should have. Which is great. I can steal the idea and donit better😅
A long, slightly ponderous book, that is none the less a great reflection on its subjects. And the art is relentlessly amazing! You guys should do Shadow of a Man as well.
On order at my LCS along with the new Charles Burns, Chris Ware and Paul Pope books this month, which puts this in really good company! In order to provide some cosmic balance to your social media comments please give Brandon my sympathies for the loss of his friend. We’re all (the comics community) the poorer for the loss of Ed and the outcry and vitriol that he was faced with, and now swept under the rug is completely shameful.
Looks great and I really would like to get my hands on one but it seems it’s only available (at decent prices) to US readers. How about the rest of the world?…
I was chomping at the bit to comment on the coloring when you were praising it, but you said it yourself later in the video: I also felt that it was too dark and muddies the line work and probably looked great on a screen but wasn't adjusted for printing. I recommend checking out Jade Khoo's work for some beautiful colors. I read her book Zoc in French but it has been translated to English. Golo Zhao is also another great creator in my opinion but is seldomly translated to English. I think his work La plus belle couleur du monde would do gangbusters at First Second.
There was another collection of a George Metzger strip put out by Fantagraphics Underground about 8 years ago, "Beyond Time and Again", which is out of print. Typically the books from this imprint have low print runs, limited distribution and are overpriced (FU indeed).
