RIBEYECON--because my JK is not a Rubicon, and I love Ribeye Steaks!
I have been a Jeep owner since 2014. During that time I have owned a 1997 TJ and a 2014 JK. Every time I had a question, I would always turn to RU-vid to the Jeep community to find the answer.
Over the years I have acquired some gear made some mods, and put them through the test. I also acquired a lot of knowledge and experience, and a lot of it I would not be able to do without the Jeep community on RU-vid.
And I feel that now it is my turn to give back and contribute, so that others can learn from me, like I have learned from the previous Trail Blazers, Overland Enthusiasts, and Jeep Fans. And this is why I started creating this content.
I have never broke any of mine in the west Texas oil field roads , I had the the original Weboost Atenna with the blue amp for almost 10 years , if anything the cable wore out from rubbing against the chassis, I just resently bought the new style , time will tell but maybe it’s not made to lay over like that . Then again I don’t drive like a bat out of hell through the west texas oil field roads , not only will it just destroy a 90 thousand dollar truck and break the antenna along with with it . They work great under normal driving conditions, these aren’t for you man . For over landers like your self, the company should make some sort of quick disconnect to use only when you need it . That would fix the problem. No offense brother just my opinion.
If this is happening to you 4 TIMES, that's pretty solid evidence of poor design and material of the Weboost. On the other hand, i wonder if you should try to relocate the mast retainer clip closer to the top of the antenna, near the weak point where the crack keeps happening? From the slo-mo, it looks as though you've discovered the weakest part of the mast for the retainer clip, that "whips" the heavier part of the antenna, which flexes it rapidly. Just an observation. I was going to order one of these antennas to replace my basic car weboost external antenna, until I saw this video. I will NOT be ordering one. Too expensive for poor quality product. Not to mention, the "OVERLAND" mount costs an additional $120+shipping!!! Weboost wants us all to bend over.
You could of removed those black wires going to the compressor switch, those wires are only the negative in case you are using the illumination lights. All you need is the red/white from the ignition to the switch then the other side of the switch is the red that just goes to the pressure switch
I would like to sincerely thank you for these weboost videos. I was just about to purchase one and very much appreciate you saving me $550. It’s really a shame of all the other videos dishonestly touting this antenna when they had the opportunity to give good advice. Thanks again so much.
This is an integral defect in this antenna system. I an very grateful for this video, i was a day out from buying one of these. I’ll go with a sat phone. Weboost looks like junk.
Thank you so much for this review! I was just about to invest into one of these and now I will not. Hopefully weboost will make their antenna better but will have to insure their customers of the improvements on the advertisement or the box before i get a inherently defective one.
Great video! I used some aluminum for a custom panel I made like you did. When you need to cut non-round holes, I marked the shape and drilled a pilot hole and used a hand held jig saw.
Just be aware that if you don’t use it frequently, that some of the arb connections parts aren’t stainless steel and they rust internally closing the airflow. It happened to me and after dismantling the lines I found the culprit. Thy symptom was, the compressor run for 1-2s and stopped, since it has the pressure cut off switch. Otherwise the arb are very good compressors, I use them for almost 20 years. Mainly twin pumps.
You're not the only one (at least on YT) that reported that exact problem. For something that was designed with the "OVERLAND" label, this is crappy. Especially for what they charge, $120 for the antenna and $120 for the mounting hardware!!! Talk about, "bending you over". After watching these reports, I won't be upgrading my standard antenna to the overland antenna! Outrageous
As said above.. engineers stated the mixture attacks the plastic of the antenna. I don’t put loctite anywhere near plastic. The “hold down” sure appears to be overkill… too rigid.
Been running my weboost for quite some time now and have never had this problem. Then again, I snap it at the metal collar as intended (mine has a metal collar indicated as an attachment/snapping point) and the vibrations don't travel down the shaft to the antenna to break it. We've travelled and camped offroad in everything from -15F in a snowstorm to 120F in Death Valley and our antenna has never failed. Interesting test.
Thank you for this review! We are constantly striving to improve our products, and your feedback is greatly valued. We have since fixed this issue, and have updated the tread lock compound so this does not happen anymore. Again, thank you for your review!
It’s going to take more than changing the thread lock. The material is inherently not up to the task. You need to change/improve the material the antenna is made of.
Still happening! Just purchased February 12, 2024 and one week later hairline cracks showing up just like the Ribeyecon demonstrates in this video. I have only driven on paved roads at a top speed of 40miles an hour. No off-road, no bumpy roads. Tech support person said they had not heard of this happening before until I referred them to this year-old youtube video documenting the bad plastic and cracking. They said they will send out a replacement which they expect to take 3 to 4 days after the request gets to their shipping department.

hey, just saw your question. The Blue/White wire is only needed if you want the switch to light up, but it is not required for the compressor to operate. I did not connect it b/c I could not get anyone to tell me which wire it is in the Jeep JK, but the compressor works fine without it being connected, my switch is under the seat so I don't need it to light up. Thank you for your question. I hope this helps.
I believe they fixed the issue since this series of vids. They told me the problem was the interaction of plastic with the threadlocker, which resulted in a chemical reaction that made the plastic brittle. They supposedly have redesigned it.
On you video it looks like you have the power cord for the refrigerator in a "track" that keeps it out of the slide mechanism. It looks like a clean install and I was just looking to see if you had any install info on it, anymore pictures of it in the vehicle, or where you got it from. Thanks@@RibeyeconAdventures
@@jscribn oh got it, it is this item on amazon: 39.3 inch Carrier Drag Chain Cable Wire R18 10x11mm (Inn H x W) Plastic Black Open Type for CNC Router Mill and 3D Printer,Wire Carrier Cable with 1 Pair Connectors,1pc Screwdriver,12 Screws let me know if you need more info.
thanks for the video, almost made the mistake of paying $130 for garbage, I'll go with the metal basic Wilson antenna, I need something durable, I'll sacrifice range
I think their fix was to redo the retainer clip. I bought the OTR kit a few weeks ago (mid August '23) but have not installed it yet. But the round part of the clip looks like the rounded arms are shorter than the one in your video, so that it doesn't take as much force to get it in and out of the clip.
That thing was part of the original kit. They probably discontinued it, I know at one point they modified it to not be so tight. Thank you for watching.
Seems like you could easily fix this with a different type of stay instead of that clip. Need to rely on the upward force of the spring in the antenna to hold in place, that way there is no drastic downward force when placing the antenna in the stay (holder) .
The weboost 311248, 311229 & 311230 antennas only offer up to 4.3db gain. The 311115 is standard style steel antenna that offers up to 6.1db gain. The huge antenna is marketing hype to get peeps to waste money on an inferior product.
Good review. It's basic physics - from a vectored beam analysis point of view, that little support is a very bad solution. When snapped in place, all of the shear force from the weight of the antenna is transferred to the weakest point along the beam (the threaded portion of the beam), as opposed to being absorbed along the entire length of the beam (from the spring to the tip of the antenna). It would have been better not to use that little support at all. The best solution is to mount the antenna so that it is oriented front to back as opposed to side to side. And to fabricate (3 D Print) a cradle for the large portion of the antenna. It could then be held in place with a rubber band or a rubber strap.
Love the detail!!! Great video! I know you said you don't have a P/N for the piece that attaches to the chuck. Can I find that at a hardware store or did you purchase online??
Hi, thank you for watching! So I purchased the compressor and parts from the same shop that worked on my jeep’s suspension. I was talking to the mechanic about installing the compressor, he told me i needed that part and just gave it to me. It was not in a package or anything, so I don’t know if it is custom made or not. My recommendation is to contact wherever you are getting the compressor from and show them the pic of that part. They most likely know what it is. Sorry i was not able to help more.
Hi, sorry for the late reply. I spoke to the vendor, they have changed the plastic holder. Also, they told me that the culprit was the threadlocker-when it comes in contact with plastic, it causes a reaction and makes it brittle. So the solution is to not put threadlocker on the part where the antenna connects to the mast. You can use it everywhere else. I did that, no issues so far. Thank you for watching.

Good job with the production and unique content. I appreciated that you opted to demonstrate the different locations by physically placing the compressor there so we could see for ourselves rather than simply pointing to the location. I don’t even have a Jeep but the location examples apply to many other off road vehicles as well. Cheers

Thanks for this, it looks like perhaps if the plastic holder were farther from the antenna, it would have room for less intense vibrations, and maybe mount a soft piece of foam for the antenna end to rest itself on and help dampen vibrations. In the instructions do they specify any specific distance you’re supposed to mount the plastic holder at along the extension to the antenna?
My thinking is that the support clamp is concentrating the load in a smaller area. I'd try to eliminate the support but in some cases omitting the support is not an option. I just recently bought a WeBoost Overland and the support clamp was not included in the kit. I didn't need it as I'm installing mine onto a flat roof. The antenna rests about 1/4" off the roof when folded. Maybe they recognized the root cause and eliminated it? Not sure. Hope you're able to get the problem solved.
You bet. I have a wk2 that I’m getting ready to install a single piston arb compressor on. Even though we have different models. Your video was very helpful. I will probably end up doing some variation of what you did. For now I’m going to do a temporary install for now and change the location later. Feel free to checkout my channel.
@@GrandExploration I am glad the video was helpful. Yeah, doing a temp setup is a great idea, it lets you try it out on a few trips and then making the final install after knowing what works and what doesn't. I just finished a trip, the only thing I would change is installing the chuck somewhere on the outside (would require drilling into the body), instead of under the seat, so that I would not need to keep the door open while airing up. I am looking forward to checking out your setup. Just by looking at the thumbnails, your Cherokee looks sweet!
Outstanding video!! Thank you for the detailed post. For the life of me I couldn't remember where I had tapped in to power for that red/yellow line when I originally installed my compressor. I had to rewire stuff for a stereo and the compressor no longer worked because I had unhooked that wire. Your video helped me solve the problem. Thanks again!!
So I purchased and installed the 3” Quick Fist Clamp on Amazon. It works ok so far. Also, spoke to an engineer from the company, the problem is the threadlocker-when it comes in contact with the plastic it makes it weaker and cracks it. So if you have not installed it yet, follow all instructions, except for putting thread locker between antenna and the mast.
I would come across these videos AFTER I buy the OTR we boost and overland mount... :( hopfully I can figure out a way to mount it to limit the cracking
Lol i know how you feel. So instead of using the plastic holder, I purchased a 3” QuickFist Clamp on Amazon. Installed yesterday, so will see how it will work. Also, I am not sure if you already installed yours, but Weboost told me the thread-locker, when it comes in contact with plastic, is what causes the plastic to weak and crack. So if you have not installed it yet, follow all instructions except for putting thread locker between the antenna and the mast. That is what i was told. I just did that yesterday, so will find out if it works in the near future.
@@RibeyeconAdventures oh good to know, thanks! Ihavnt installed yet , we got two days of rain here so I'm delaying it. I also will have to jerry rig the mount anyway since I don't have a basket rack or anything (i have a big freaking solar panel lol) but, I have some ideas! look forward to hearing your results
@@LostandFoundTravel hey! Yeah so I’ve been driving with it for the past few days now over various terrain, it is holding up. The best part is that the boost actually works really nice in spots where the signal is very weak and my phone shows no reception i get one or two bars and can listen to spotify and text.
From reading others' replies, seems after I contacted Weboost about that plastic mount, they stopped including it with the kit. But I do not think they replaced it with anything, so you would need to find your own solution or have the antenna bounce on the roof while folded down. I was thinking about using a rubber 3" Quick Fist Clamp from Amazon, just need to figure out how to secure it to the roof rack.
yeah, no problem, a week or two ago I received an email from Weboost higher-ups telling me they have a new design for the antenna to fix the old design weakness. Hopefully it will be released soon. Thank you for watching!
