I had no idea this description was here! Ha! Tumbleweed Fly and Tackle Co. is the name of the shop! Look for us on all of this social media stuff soon. I also keep a site dedicated to his ramblings, photographs, gear tests, fly patterns, and other miscellaneous things at backcountryfishnerd.wordpress.com
Thank you for enjoying the videos and keep in touch!
David, thank you very much for this explanation. 2021 will be my second year fly fishing and before I started in 2020 I spent numerous hours reading and watching online to understand the best leader length. Your explanation is by far the best I have seen. Many/most other articles and videos just say to use a certain length but give no reason why. This video is very logical and clear and answers questions I had about leader length. Stephan
When fluorocarbon gets into the range of 80-150lb test, it acts very similar to nylon monofilament. I prefer nylon against the teeth of a musky though due to nylon having a higher tensile strength AFTER being cut or cracked.
Hi David , Great info! Subscribed right away! I always thought mono Floats and Fluoro sinks. Im from the Netherlands and we dont have Musky overhere..but we do have Big Pike..people tell me all the time Mono isn't Tooth Proof... I used 80lb Trilene mono.. i'll guess that is way too thin?
excellent 3 part series, I've been looking for information on straightening mono so this helps tremendously - even though I don't fly fish, this leader and knot info is great for swimbait fishing. Do you think 2 feet is enough leader to prevent bite off's or should I use a longer one? I use braid as a main line.
Excellent tutorial! But I have a question about the 20# section. Do you loop it to your flyline and then to the 50# butt section? I normally would think you’d want it between the butt section and bite tippet, but I don’t see how you would do that with this system. I guess given the shortness of the leader, it probably doesn’t matter whether the hinge is at the end of the flyline or in the middle of the leader since either way, it’s going to be much softer than the surrounding sections.
I'm with ya! Yes, just loop to loop between the line and leader. I like it at the top of the leader because a musky will roll up the line. I only use that break section when I'm in a drift boat or really bad conditions where I can't just jump down and grab the fly. This way I can run 20 full leaders without the break section and a few break sections. Instead of having 3 parts that I have to tie up to fish. It does flub some casts, but no biggie. I hope that cleared up a little bit of why.
That's a really long answer. I'll toss it under an indicator if I'm fishing to gills or bass a bit off of the shore. No indicator for carp, gotta watch 'em eat it or guess. The rest is high sticking gills or dead drifting to trout. Late fall and late spring for trout and any time of year for all the other fish. I hope i covered it! ha!
YEAH thanks man mostly fer carp PRInce fly i tryed it before not so good in my area thezse carp in my are super SPOOKY one wrong step gone!! big fat CANADA river edge carp,
I remember a trip to the Juan everyone in my party gave me shit for throwing a white on white barely legal, proved them wrong by landing the largest and most fish of the trip. streamers are super fun there, you can watch em chase it down. Seeing a streamer strike is just as exciting if not more than a take on a dry fly.
This guy was developed on the lower gunnison cause I got tired of tying normal hare's ears and getting snapped off. Ha! I can't remember when I realized that it crushes warm water species too.
Hey man. New subscriber. Fun videos. Was this in Abq? I live in Abq and am wanting to hit carp on the fly. Any spots you can let me in on that are here in town? I think I met you when you were doing the fly shop @ Bluewater. Bought one of your flies. Gigantic white flying chicken. Musky Tamer. Some such madness! I love it. I'm trying to expand my own videos and experience to pike, muskie, carp and bass. I've always been a trout guy mainly, but I love fishing in general. Anyway - Let me know - if you can... - about any carp spots in Abq. CU on the water......................................AO
Yeah, the ditches north of tingley and the other carp spot... Gotta keep that one under wraps. Don't want anyone getting into trouble. But the carp are ALL OVER albs and easy to spot. It is all about exploring. I'm still out at the shop. I'll run into you at some point. I'm sure.
