A showcase of fun, fascinating, and sometimes dangerous hobby projects in the realms of high voltage, high electric currents, strong magnetic fields, bright lights, vintage electronics, old computers, bizarre mechanics, and more.
Channel name was previously "Eric Wasatonic". Changed in August 2021.
I have calibrated over a thousand Fluke 85s in the air force. Never found one off-spec. Found 1 with a broken fuse. And a hand full of display issues such as the one you describe here in this video. I used some alcohol as well and this worked very well for me. Fluke 85 is a very reliable high quality Multimeter. But with basic functionality. Absolutely love them.
Nice, fixed my (new out of the box) hygrometer by cleaning the contacts: rubbers, screen and print. Using your tips, cottontips and contactspray instead of isopropanol. Thanks for this 10yo video.
Thanks for this great video! I've wanting to see inside one of these for years. A much older and more sensitive variant of this is the quadrant electrometer.
As long as you don't push silicone diodes to their limit it is quite safe and they often are wired in parallel. Thermal runaway will happen when the first diode to break down, has too much current flowing through it, then the chain reaction occurs as the circuit will continually allow to much current to flow through the other diodes and they pop till they all burn out.
I have a similar type meter (says thermocouple type, amperes R.F.), Simpson brand, that I picked up at a hamfest but it's only working correctly with DC in one particular direction. When I try the other direction, the needle momentarily deflects a bit CCW and then moves CW to give a reading but the reading seems to be offset by about -0.5A (i.e. reads less than the actual value). Therefore, if I use AC, the reading is also less than it should be.
I've disassembled the meter to get a closer look at the thermocouple setup. It's really just two metal blocks joined together by two strands of (dissimilar) metals across which the potential voltage develops (as explained in this video) and I'm getting different voltages depending on the direction of the current (same absolute value). Weird.
I was looking through a pile of discarded electronics scrap and found a 4 wire fan but couldn't figure out why it would need that many; your video made it clear! I'd definitely use mine in a future project Btw, I find it weird that setting the control input to low sets the fan to "minimum" instead of just stopping, maybe to make it easier to get going once the control signal raises?
Hello it's cool video!!! My device have stuck HDD. Maybe you still have that recovery DVD ? Or can extract drivers from XP installed on your instrument?
I did some experiment long time ago with old alarmclock and radio alarmclock powered by LM8560 after check it's datasheet and some circuit diagram for radio alarmclock or non radio alarmclock. Radio alarmclock don't wake you up by backup battery when in radio mode and power outage but it's possible to modify (2 transistors, diode, resistors) when no AC buzzer is used also can be modify when volume for radio too low to wake you up by it switch to buzzer. When in backup mode time is not acqurate because internal oscilator but my friend made precise thermal compensated oscilator for back up run. I made modification for trickle charging rechargeable 9V battery because it drain very fast when no AC and don't need to check battery if good so often. Rechargeable battery lifespan with trickle charging from clock can least up to 10 years. I also add two LED on radio scale when radio ON.
I thought the trick to separate the base from the tube with that type of tube was just "install the tube into an awkward to access socket in a piece of equipment, wait till there is a bit corrosion and seizing, then try to lever the tube out of the socket by hand?" :)
Plus, a thermal camera will be much more useful because you would be able to take a look at everything on your project to make sure which components did heat up and which wouldn’t
You're losing a lot of lift due to the gaps (weaker eddy currents) in the Al sheets. Why not place a wide plastic cylinder inside the coil? GREAT VIDEO!!
I don’t know, but anytime I see electric plasma rather from radio vacuum tubes or otherwise it really makes my tops of my hands tingle a lot. I’m not sure what causes this maybe because my mind not liking plasma or gives me a nervous reaction to plasma. I’m not sure.
You are life Saver.. I just order a fan from Farnel and got a 3 wire fan.. I was like what?? My amplifier need a 2 wire fan.. A check on data sheet reveal sensor.. Its so misleading as i thought connet to a thermistor to control speed fan but in actual fact it is a open collector tachometer. By watching your video, my worries gone and i knew exactly what to do. You save time and effort to experiment and might blew up the fan or give up as that yellow wire is not an input but an output.
Grrrrr, i suspect my meter might be possessed, or at a minimum this mfk'r just has a mind of its own, like a norman bates, jack Nicholson from the shining type mind! I swear this thing is trying to convince me to add a tiny leg and foot to it just so it can kick me in the nuts for its own entertainment! I was so optimistic watching this thinking i finally had it in checkmate, but it doubled down and resisted the cleaning, and hoisted the middle finger and said try again mfk'rs, and echoed for me to grab a prize from bottom shelf, and better luck next time! Im scared its gonna contact my ex wife and start a rumor about me and abusing alcohol to cause me custody issues with my children! It may be time to throw in the towel and burn this demon meter, unless theres any other suggestions! Btw, great video, im jealous of all the: " worked for me " comments, ugghh.... Yours truly, Bat shit crazy & still holding on
thx to your experience and a few other youtube videos covering "Zebra" rubbery conductive contact strips that are used to connect circuit board contacts to LCD contacts and how to clean them - i was successfully able to restore my LCD display functioning on a very expensive race car digital dash display - cost $0 - just 10 minutes of my time and some research and patience
What is first ?Disc spinning and lens light go on or first light goes on and then the disc start spinning??I have problem with my Numark Cdn 88 double cd .Laser light wont go .
Just watched this on 11/05/2024 and it is the only video I have found that comes close to explaining 4 wire operation. Thank you. Terry from Australia.
Wow, 10 years ago....now april 2024! Thanks man! I'm i glad this post is still around. I was wondering about a simple occilator 😊. Also thanks to RU-vid ! 🍀 FM.
Thanks for the like ! It made me look again to the video! We are so spoiled with RU-vid, bombarded with one post after the other that we easely forgets yesterday's post. Electronics stay's an other univers to learn about, for me. In this case i wanted to compare in a simple way my "EARRRINGING" sound with an electronic fabricated sound. Knowing just a little of electronics, ha 🙃 ! This post helps understanding. 👍. Thanks, 👋🍀🌞FM
