Grew up in Hull and left when i was 21. I can still remember the smell of the fish on foggy autumn mornings for some reason. Every week in the early Seventies there were record catches it seemed. I left in 1982 and there were almost no ships left. It was so sad. Happiest days of my life. Went back four years ago and it had changed so much...for the worse. When i left i was so choked up and virtually in floods of tears for the past...and what had become of my home city. I don't think I'll be returning . Death will take me first i reckon.

28th April, 1943, I was born in the front bedroom of 26 East Grove, Gipsyville, Hessle Road. All the family worked on the fish dock except, after the war, my father, who had been in the Navy as an ordinance artificer, was an an engineer working on 'big boats' in King George dock.
