People using the road make mistakes (like speeding, running stop signs and red lights, turning left in front of oncoming traffic), always have and always will. Crashes will always be with us, but they need not result in fatalities or serious injury. Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world - the intersection type with the lowest risk of fatal or serious injury crashes - (much more so than comparable signals). Modern roundabouts require a change in speed and alter the geometry of one of the most dangerous parts of the system - intersections. The reduction in speed to about 20 mph and sideswipe geometry mean that, when a crash does happen at a modern roundabout, you might need a tow truck, but rarely an ambulance. Visit the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or FHWA for modern roundabout FAQs and safety facts. The FHWA has been saying for over 20 years that signal intersections have TEN TIMES the fatality risk of modern roundabouts
So far, it seems terrible. The pedestrian crossings will make it even slower. Did engineers ever consider that elderly people will take forever, stopping to look between every car? Then pedestrians can stop all traffic whenever they feel like it, and then the red light will confuse people for another 20 seconds. Between St. Armands circle, which never holds up pedestrians into batches to cross, and this new circle, it seems like it's some vague notion of "community equity" rather than traffic flow that is the priority. Where's the "equity" of creating 20+ minute traffic jams to get off Longboat Key for 5-6 months a year? I hope that this circle will have better capacity when fully finished than it does now.

Looks like your pushing through a project that may destroy three ecosystems. 1. The lagoon 2. The seabed being dredged 3. The Dune area you are dumping the sand on The city is also making half the area a public swim area while dredging for boat traffic
