Back in the day, it was to outwit your opponent with the deck you had, not make sure that you had 5 minimum negates so that you can play the game because effects were rampant. Normal & Ritual monsters had a purpose, now it's effects or nothing, Pros: Increased interactivity in terms of pulling off combos. Cons: "Your opponent cannot activate anything in response to this summon", "Negate that activation", "Hand trap", "Once per turn (Quick effect)", and "Your opponent cannot target ____ cards" all while having tons of searching cards, Maxx C, and suddenly an archetype cannot play because it has no counters after it just tried to negate your negate or couldn't stand a chance because they didn't go first (Lockout). If you have none of these options, you cannot play an archetype that doesn't have these same principles or you just cannot play at all because you were second and their entire board consists of "(Quick Effect)" cards that are on the field or in their hand and all of them negate, prevent their own cards' destruction/banishment, or have a graveyard effect that prevents you from continuing your combo. Regular trap cards sure had a purpose alright, now they can be set and played from the deck, sure sounds balanced, until you figure out it's only for a few select archetypes and you suddenly have multiple traps on the field and in the hand. Boy I wonder which landmine I'll step on today. :')

i'm someone from a lot of card games and the two solutions of making accessible and making a card balance so that one card doesnt price up high is hard to explain to others. because you have to keep in mind what started all of this is because they want the cards to sell. at the time of 5d that was really like the only way konami can get players to buy cards. if you make the cards accessible, then you have problem of wanting to sell packs because players can just buy specific cards they need for the price of one dollar. on the other hand, making a card balance to be really honest to a lot of yu gi oh players especially the nutjobs with a lot of money are not gonna be interested in. pendulum summon was an example because despite what it is. there were a lot of them that was really fun mechanics with them but mechanics that arent usefull in the meta isnt going to be interested by a lot. which is why they have something like teardrop whatever the f, because no one buys cards otherwise. even as someone who left yu gi oh for a long time, i have to say it's kinda hard to say konami didnt give a damn. because i've seen a lot of effort was put to try fixing yu gi oh. they make cards more interesting mechanic wise, players hated it because it's not the meta. they try giving sets that you can play for two players. expensive as heck. i saw the hope that maybe speed duel or rush duel i think could be a new format that can bring players but people that played there never went to the main one and just kinda stuck there because rush duel was better laid out. and for the old players, what da fuck does konami have to do? just ditch the decades of yu gi oh just for this baby-fied version? im pretty sure the old players are not gonna happy with that. if you bring someone who has no idea about anime and give them to watch a yu gi oh match. they pretty much felt like it was a bunch of kids making rules as they play, and that's perfect to describe yu gi oh. yeah it's fun when you're the kid making the rules but the rest of the other kids in the playground none of them are having fun trying to play along with shitty rules the kid makes. so they are just gonna leave and play elsewhere. i have pretty much move on from yu gi oh and play other card games. hololive have their own card game now and while im not much a fan of vtubers as i was, i want to pick up the hobby of card games and hololive ocg might be good place to feel what yu gi oh was again

As for the Local/Regionals: Um, that really is more on location and the player base. Are there card shops or other stores willing to host tournaments? Do the players show up to get the store owners to want to host those tournaments? Is there a shop or person willing to sponsor and do the legwork to get a location for a Yugioh regional? Etc etc. those are things that for the most part are out of Konami’s hands and in the players hands.

Well, Power Creep cannot be helped. Vanguard has been trying to fight its power creep and it’s turned the game more boring than it already was. But Konami is bad at managing the power creep of the game especially since Link format. The banlist in concept is fine, but yea Konami’s hits can be strange sometimes because it’s basing on some obscure thing they find that no one else cares about. (Samara Lotus got banned because of an FTK deck that was found with it, except that in a tournament it was very fragile and not that consistent… didn’t stop Konami from banning it though) I actually disagree completely about the price on the game. You should have expensive and collectable cards in your game. Sure it’s nice to get reprints and we do quite often (to a frustrating degree in some senses as certain cards just loose all value when they get reprinted. Sure it also happens in reverse too plenty, but usually those are fairly older cards that aren’t easily available. Honestly for the “complexity” of the game, that’s more of just how you teach new players - I usually have them learn 1 mechanic at a time and smooth them into the game’s complexity. The biggest concern I have is really losing the back and forth the game was best known for. That’s been quietly killed off for a more basic version of “break my single board” and no decks really can manage or care about a grind game. That’s a big issue and kinda annoying when playing the more competitive game. I like strategy but I also prefer when I can strategize for more than Turn 1

@@HadesGamesolosgowverseandkrato power creep is a natural thing in every living TCG. If the next set isn’t stronger than the last one in some way, it doesn’t sell. If new sets don’t sell, the game isn’t making money. If the game doesn’t make money, it dies. That’s how all games work that release new sets. That being said, Konami has pushed the power creep too far and it’s hurting the player base in the other way because people are also leaving the game because the power creep is getting to severe. The thing is that power creep isn’t really just “corporate greed” it’s more that R&D isn’t doing their job correctly and it’s causing unintentional issues. Corporate Greed is releasing new sets so much that the meta can barely react, or refusing to ban brand new extremely broken cards because they are still selling current sets, but out of control Power Creep is bad for a business as that’s more likely to negatively affect the bottom line as people leave the game if done badly. Konami does need to do a reset set (a set that will sell badly but is more meant to reset the power level of the game somewhat) but idk if Konami really wants to do that.

This was a good analysis of the myriad of problems surrounding Yu-gi-oh! Thank you. For me, I found the biggest problem to understanding the game is figuring out the different axis the decks play on. Links, Xyz, Synchro, even Pendulum as concepts were fairly easy to learn when I got back into the game. However, each archetype has it's own tricks and unique strategies which can make it difficult to understand how to play against. With so many different decks available it can take a while to learn how to play effectively. Of course, card prices are another huge issue, and this one is entirely on the TCG. I disagree with your idea that 'many cards that are affordable can suddenly become unaffordable'. While occasionally a certain niche card can preform decently well in a tournament and receive a slight bump up in price, usually I find the opposite is true: All the upcoming decks have been labbed out and the meta is defined six months before we get the cards released here. And that's because the OCG has been playing with them and seeing how they do there. Which leads back into the pricing issue, as the TCG sees what does well and massively rarity spikes those good cards and makes them far more difficult to find in packs. Basically, you have to spend Collector levels of money you would be spending on a different card game just to be a basic player in this one, and it really sucks. Other games, like Pokemon, have solved this problem. They release the best cards in multiple levels of rarity (with different artwork not just a few extra sparkles!) so that the game is much more affordable for budget players to play. The banlist I feel, has also become a bit of an issue. It was first introduced waaaaay back as an emergency method to try and control the power level of the game when some cards caused unexpected power spikes. But now it just feels like a way to slowly cycle the old decks out of the game. This list was one of the most anticipated I've seen since rejoining the game, with record low numbers in tournaments and a community desperate for big changes that it ultimately didn't do enough. Certain cards (like especially Dimension Shifter) led to unfun games and from what I heard a lot of the community was hoping that they did more. Instead they lowered the ceiling a little bit on most of the best decks... still leaving them the best decks. Maybe Yubel is better than Snake-Eyes now? It doesn't feel great, and I say that as a Yubel player. All of this might just be a problem of Power Creep. With how much the game has advanced, it feels difficult to have engaging games. Either you win or lose on the first turn, with everything being decided from that first hand.
@lordgeovanni
@lordgeovanni Месяц назад
So I have been on the fringe of TCG for a good while now (Pendulum was just starting when I decided to end my physical game, played some of Duel Links for a little while and then that got ridiculous so ended there too). I still keep slightly updated on the game, but understanding what I know is important for my comment. And I will be going in-depth across many different topics. Sorry if this gets confusing. The first problem I ALWAYS talk about with Yu-Gi-Oh is the Power Creep, but not of what people expect - It is the power creep of mechanics specifically. When YGO started, Special Summoning was unlikely to happen in more than maybe a THIRD of all turns, and rarely more than 5 times per player within an entire Duel. Aside some Staples like Monster Reborn, SSummons were rare. And since then, the numerous amounts of SSummons, and methods (from hand, GY, Pendulum, other specialties like XYZ, Synchro, Link...) make the game more of Special Summons and ignore the Normal Summon (or Set) completely. The limit of one Normal Summon (or Set) per turn was a MAJOR limiter on Power Creep, and by making SSummons unlimited (and FREE for a lot of cards) the control over the Creep basically evaporated. The second Power Creep Mechanic is Destroy. Just consider how Players remove their opponent monsters (or even cards in general). Normally you would destroy in battle. Then there were specific cards like Neo-Spacian Grand Mole who could Bounce and effectively make a Remove for your Normal Summon. Then DESTORY became too OP, and cards were created to stop, negate, or counter any "Destroy". And then Removal became overpowered because Remove without Destroy was the new unblockable thing. Think about back when Stardust Dragon was spammed everywhere. As soon as Destroy lost its importance, so did Stardust. an e And the third Power Creep Mechanic is the new Monster Card Types. Synchro wasn't bad, it was new. But then the control cards (Level Limit - Area B, Gravity Bind) were rendered COMPLETELY USELESS due to the new type of monster - XYZ do not have a "Level". EVERY new Monster Card Type has found a way to eliminate entire kinds of Control. Pendulum allow for massive amounts of SSummon, leading to flooding the board, and also are recycled into the Extra Deck instead of "burned out" into the GY or Banished Zone - They WILL return, and sooner. Link not only do not have "Level" or "Rank"... They don't even have DEFENSE (so cannot be shifted in position) or able to be SET (Book of Moon immune, for example). And these all are just MECHANICS that are blocked by new card Mechanics. And then there is the Ban List. And it has TWO different issues. I will focus on the minor one first... The Types of cards banned. Consider cards that mimic other cards such as "They Tyrant Neptune". Specifically, cards that mimic the name or effects of other cards. They are completely FORBBIDDEN. And why? Because their interaction with some SPECIFIC monsters allows them to be OP. Such as "Lyrilusc - Independent Nightingale". As such, they completely BANNED this card when they could have fixed this entire problem by errata'ing Nightingale to have an unnegateable effect: "This card is immediately destroyed, regardless of any other effect, if this monster is not a [some identifier]." Such as adding "Fusion Monster" to Nightingale. That would prevent 100% of Neptune shenanigans from utilizing Nightingale and still make cards like Neptune acceptable for use. By ignoring "older" cards and creating significant oversights like Nightingale, they have basically banned entire concepts (such as Mimicing other cards) just because one or two become too OP. The second issue with the Ban List is the overarching finality of it. IF they implemented a system of "characteristic" limits, the entire system would be significantly better. Such as what DuelLinks did - "You may only have three/two/one card(s) of any named on this list". If there was a limit of the number of cards that can do [X], a massive amount of issues could easily be solved. Such as when Chicken Game was running out of control - if there was a limiter of "You may only have 3 cards that [Searches out Field Spell Cards]", then there wouldn't have been issue with "Terraforming", "Metaverse" and "Demise of the Land" ("Planet Pathfinder", "Pop-Up"...). This would also drastically reduce the Forbidden & Limited List as well, as that would no longer need to have cards to stop one specific OP combo, and would encourage deck diversity instead of having one niche setup that makes Decks unfair. Such as "You may only have 10 cards that [Draws from your Deck]" stopping things like Exodia OTK/FTKs or endless loops that feel unfair by the opponent, but then brings value back to cards like "Upstart Goblin" rather than having to limit or ban them. Talking about excessive overreach, consider one of the issues with the current game - the ability to have so many actions per turn. If there was more hard Limits (generous Limits, but Hard Game Mechanic Limits) there wouldn't be so many OP combos. For example: "A Player may only Special Summon from the Extra Deck up to 5 times per turn." Like... how many Decks actually NEED to Special Summon that many times from the Extra Deck specifically? And with something like that imposed, it can prevent degenerate strategies like what happened with Zoodiac, which basically is what Links devolved into anyway..., and also increase the powercap on cards such as the Rank-Up type XYZs. Number 39 into Number C39 for example. And because you cannot just infinitely upgrade, the upgrade card now can have stronger effects or stats. And then we can look at the current system of praising new Archetypes and basically destroying older concepts. Especially Non-Lockdown Control. Something like Chaos Emperor Dragon + Yata-Garasu were LOCKDOWNs. Basically multi-level controls that blocked anything the opponent could do. Lockdowns are NOT fun. They damage the game. But something that is a Control but isn't a Lockdown by itself? Those should be praised and NOT destroyed constantly. Such as "Necrovalley", "Skill Drain", "Level Limit - Area B", "Imperial Iron Wall", "Imperial Order", "Royal Decree", "Summon Limit". These cards specifically punish certain kinds of Decks, but can be worked around and encourage "Out of the Box" style play. By having them be restricted, they specifically encourage play that makes things feel unfair. And I should note here - I am not saying that some of those cards are OP on their own... Something like "Time Seal" are actually too OP on their own and should be banned. But when you want to limit something like Necrovalley for affecting the GY, or "Skill Drain" for neutralizing too many opponent plays... That is the point of those cards. PLAY AROUND THEM. ...continued in reply
@lordgeovanni
@lordgeovanni Месяц назад
... And now the next thing I have to talk about is the multi-use within the same card. Some actions, like Special Summoning itself, are powerful. They make material, they create fodder, they enable On-Field effects, etc. But then you have On-Summon effects, and then On-Field and Continuous Effects, And then effects that you Tribute for, and then effects when cards "Leave the Field" or are "Sent to the GY". By having too many different effects on the same cards, they create degenerative play. I shouldn't be able to Special Summon something from Hand, then search because I Special Summoned, then tribute it for another effect, and finally get a bonus Special Summon because it was Sent to the GY. Something like "Cyber Dragon" was nice and balanced. For comparison, look at "Curious, the Lightsworn Dominion". This card has an effect when Link Summoned. And then that very result activates its other effect. And then when it leaves the field by any opponent effect, or battle, then you get another bonus. By having effects which work into other effects on the SAME CARD, they are making OP Combos within the same card - that is far too powerful when this game is suppose to have an element of randomness. This even highlights my point before of limiting [X] types of cards or preventing more than [#] [Action]s per turn. It doesn't make things OP to prevent a Player from Special Summoning more than 10 times within the same turn. But it DOES prevent things like the Gallis the Star Beast OTK: Without the ability to Special Summon Gallis infinite times, the combo is delayed and the opponent can react better. Then there comes the AMOUNT of different rules. Understanding how to play the "Normal" game is one thing, but having to learn how Ritual Monsters work is different. And then there is Fusion Monsters. And Synchro... XYZ... Pendulum... Link. Each having their own rules and interactions. Will Sangan activate if it is detached from an XYZ as Material? Sudden obscure mechanics are needed to be known by basically EVERY Player. And this applies on BOTH sides - "Sangan" WANTS to be "Sent from the Field", but something like "The Immortal of Thunder" can skip its negative effect if it never "Leaves the Field" because it became XYZ Material. And this is just one minor issue, now think about the numerous different things that new Players need to learn ALL AT ONCE to be able to play without being made to feel like things were unfair - Sorry that I didn't know that I needed to chain a negate to this one specific monster summon in your combo of 10+ Extra Deck monsters, utilizing Link Summons which I don't understand, all because I just started and only learned how Synchro, Fusion, and XYZ work. The problem isn't understanding your own cards, it is NEEDING TO KNOW ALL THE OTHER ONES TOO. Finally, I wish there was a new card type, and yeah I understand the hypocrisy... but if there was a new type of card, something like "Rule Card" which a Player has randomly the ability to activate without knowing which one it is, and basically just added a new Rule... More-or-less similar to the older style Field Spells, that could fix a LOT of the game. For example, if a Rule was "The first 3 cards sent to a Player's GY each turn are Banished instead", now that could make things interesting. And if every Rule was "Once per Duel", there would effectively be an interest in possibly using RNG to try and get a Rule that would help yourself and hinder the opponent, while making things feel more fair. Especially if there was limited interaction with your opponent's Rules - Such as "Your Opponent's Rule Card is negated and destroyed 5 Standby Phases after this card resolves" instead of just "Negate and Destroy your opponent's Rule Card". This entire premise would also have requirements such as "Rule Decks require 10 cards exactly" and "One random Rule is activated by spending 2000 LP, only one Rule can be activated per turn, previous Rules are negated/destroyed/removed when a new Rule is activated". All leading to interesting risk/reward for the Turn Player on if they should try to go for a new Rule or not. Wow this was long... But yeah, there are a LOT of issues with Yu-Gi-Oh. And they only are getting worse as the game limps along. Even Duel Links is horribly overwhelming and unfun, it is why I left that too. Now I just randomly look up some things like old Archetypes and eat popcorn. But that is the issue: Old players leaving and New Players being impeded.

Respectfully, tyrant Neptune is 100% the problem not some random card that’s hard to summon and easy to copy the effect of with Neptune. Even worse when they stapled this effect into an easily summonable fusion like starving venom
@lordgeovanni
@lordgeovanni 8 дней назад
@@frig7014 Respectfully, I think you critically miss the major factor that causes these "easily summonable" monsters to become stupidly OP. First, if the copier monster is easy to summon, yes they are a problem. Copying a monster's effect IS an extremely overpowered effect... BUT it shouldn't be full grounds to ban any card with such an effect. Nor should it be grounds to never make cards with similar concepts. Now there IS a problem with how easy it is to summon Tyrant Neptune and SKD Starving Venom, however that was a design issue from the start with those cards. But then we can look at where the core issue IS. For example, Lyrilusc does three different things: first it increases its own ATK based on its own "level". Second it makes itself immune to other cards. And third, it allows Effect Damage based on the card's ATK value. Let's not mince words here. All three of those are amazing effects. Literally the only thing that prevents "Lyrilusc - Independent Nightingale" from that same Forbidden List is the pitiful stats it starts with, along with the summon requirements to make it stronger. The Tyrant Neptune specifically has a Level 10 from the start. Which increases with this effect by FIVE THOUSAND. And THAT is where the problem is in this specific situation. It could have been solved with something like "If this card's original Level is not 1, or this card is not a Fusion Monster, return this card to the Deck. This effect cannot be negated or chained to and can be activated even during the Damage Step." The core "problem" is the Level difference. This conceptual effect would only neutralize copier effects, and by requiring an Original Level 1, it would additionally solve not only Tyrant Neptune, but any other future Copier. Instead we just lose Neptune to the Forbidden List and where else are the other Copiers? Exactly, not being made as often specifically due to these potential issues. But why do I suggest this? Simple, erratas are not exactly difficult. And as this is an effect, it would additionally be copied and becomes a "poison pill" for Copiers without affecting the original monster. Making two (or more) specific limiters, such as my proposed effect limiting Original Level and Card Type both, would help prevent problematic effects from being Copied. And yet, there also exists the exact chance for Konami to make a designed Copier in the future... Which is far different than flat out banning an entire concept. Agaien, I am not advocating for Tyrant Neptune specifically, or even saying that Neptune isn't powerful. But when an entire concept is being ignored/persecuted, I have issue. Especially when they could have "fixed" Neptune and/or other Copiers by errata "poison pills" into other monsters' effects (which would completely do nothing except prevent Copiers, aka not affecting ANY other setups) but they also could have just errata'd Neptune and SDK Starving Venom (something I dislike, honestly) into having further restrictions (such as maybe requiring the copied monster to have a Level above 6, or maybe above the monster's own level. There is a lot that could be done... and Konami is too busy pushing the next Tier 0 concepts and neutering previous high-tier. But I still hold them responsible.
@frig7014
@frig7014 8 дней назад
@@lordgeovanni there are way more problematic interactions with the copiers than *just* nightingale FTK, along with the sheer volume of text you need to add to already bloated cards to make them unable to be copied. That said there is still phantom of chaos left as one of the few generic copiers if you wanna experiment with that, tho I haven't seen any consistent combos that make use of it.
@lordgeovanni
@lordgeovanni 8 дней назад
@@frig7014 My theoretically proposed ideas would be for if Konami wants to permit copies, but only with restrictions. If they just want a full ban, they could do something like "If this card's printed name is not "X", negate this card's effects and it's ATK and DEF become 0." It is more about correcting absurd behavior than preventing all.

I have to disagree with you on the cost of the cards being too high partially because this is a staple damn in every card game. Plus, you in the easy way out because you didn’t have to get your cards through buying the packs and having the luck of the draw, you chose to go through the secondary market. So they’re not supposed to save you any money and that’s not a Konami problem that’s a personal problem! And I understand the benefits of doing it this way you don’t have to waste money on useless packs to get more cards you don’t need! But when you’re not doing that! That’s also less money for Konami As well and they’re just going to print less cards because it’s not selling well! Hence why upper deck probably left them on their own!

When it comes to the cost of the game in general, I just buy Japanese cards. I don't play competitive events anyway so it's not a big deal for me. But the price of the TCG is definitely a huge problem, and Konami really is just making foreigners flip the bill for their business expenses.

Power Creep is normal, but yes if the increase of power creep shortens/outpaces the longevity of a given archetype, that becomes a issue. Banlist should be about game balancing, and it still feels unbalanced- its typically designed in Konami's favor to push sales of "certain sets or archetypes". I don't think yu-gi-oh is too complex, but also play other tcgs, but what yugioh does need are Effect indicators or a Effect icons on the monster cards, to give the timing and effect activation window- for instance lets say we add a little lightning bolt on monster effects that can be used on either players turn, just like a quick play spells (same spell speed). And do the same for continuous effects with a little infinity symbol next to the text, and a star icon for ignition effects, a little tombstone symbol on graveyard effects etc.
@reiji_vt4262
@reiji_vt4262 Месяц назад
Yeah the way the banlist is catered more to Konami's sales is what's always made me just sigh almost every time. As someone that's played almost every other main TCG on the market, I do have to say YuGiOh isn't too hard, but that's because I've been playing it since the GX era. As a newcomer entering the game today, I think there's some issues that might deter new players, but I always do recommend people just give it a chance and spend some time with it and then decide after you've given it enough time. Simplified text on cards would definitely help with that. Maybe not icons like in other games, but just streamline the text a little more

Power creep is just a way so komani's main players Ycs dudes will buy the new sets They know if they print broken decks that summon billion cards in a turn The 1,000 or so people who go to events will rush to buy the same 20 cards Which inflates the price cause scarcity and since yugioh players are whales All 1,000 yugioh players spent couple thousand on the meta deck then komani makes a new powerful deck And everyone drops the old one Buying the new set The whole game marketing is focused on power creep as to appeal to the remaining player base until the game dies slowly as result of nobody liking the game outside of said whales

I think that powercreep is inevitable. First, having the same deck be meta for 5-6 years would be boring. And banning a deck just because it's old is annoying. Second, when exploring new design space, it is natural that OP cards will emerge. For example, how do you predict how big of a drawback Lightsworn's self mill is ? It's easy to get that wrong. The third reason is simply money.

Stealth kragen have a 1pt quick effect to blow up a targeted monster of your opponents and thus control the field. If destroyed, stealth kragen becomes two kragen that can do the same quick effect once each per turn. Mermail abysslung can be summoned to increase the attack of other monsters you control and help protect the other monsters by assuming atack target priority Electric jellyfish is versatile and can help summon any of the xyz monsters in deck similarly to buzzsaw shark. Silent sea nettle can be special summoned if there are any other water monsters on the field like abyss shark can Minairuka can special summon itself if any water monster activates their effect. Arbitration of white allows me to turn my fish into tuners and subsequently synchro summon white aura whale OR in most cases ust get my fish back from the gy after using them. Whitefish salvage also is there for graveyard shenanigans. It is so consistent that it will be rare to ever have an opening hand that will disappoint me. Almost all the monsters help summon each other in synergy so that almost every turn a stealth kragen or other xyz threat could be summoned and usually with support buffs like from astral kuriboh or number wall. The xyz toolbox can help deal with almost any situation and turn the duel in my favor It feels fun to run this deck and turns dont take forever to play out as its not focused on long tedious combos to do it's thing: control the board via primarily destruction of monsters before said monsters can do stuff and subsequently parry and attack over a few turns to win
