Seen them twice, both in perth, once was during the pandemic, the venue was being strict and put it as a seated gig, fans where having none of it, they started playing this and the crowd where up giving it big licks the rest of the night, norrie and angus where loving it, the venue hated it. Dont go to perth for a trad gig 😅 roll on edinburgh castle
Such a beautiful song in memory of all those brave men. Absolutely tragic to have survived the unimaginable horrors of WW1, then for their lives to end like that.
I dedicate this song to my wee cuz piper Derek Grant. Thank you Mark Knopfler for this beautiful song about your uncle and thank you Joan for sharing. ❤

My late Dad the Rev John Angus Gillies 20/7/30 to 07/12/22, remembers being shown where some of the Iolair victims were laid to rest. Hardly a family on Lewis did`nt lose someone.
Mark Knopfler composed ‘Piper To The End’ as a tribute to his uncle Freddie, Lance Corporal Frederick John Laidler, a piper of the 1st Battalion, Tyneside Scottish, The Black Watch, RHR, who carried his pipes into action and was killed with them at Ficheux, near Arras, on the 20th of May, 1940, aged 20.”
