there is no way to setup temporary shorter fixed runtimes for the target zones to run 3x a day without having to alter the normal runtimes in all zones? seems crazy to have to overwrite your "normal" programming just for seeding. then having to reverse all that to restore your normal schedule.
Thank you for this video... this saved my butt. Pipe connected to the backflow on the outside of house burst. Happened to see your video and shut off the water immediately. Huge relief !
What if I think I have a line break between water meter and the sprinkler shut off valve? Do I have to shut off water at the meter for the whole house?
Videos like this are what makes RU-vid so AWESOME!... After watching your video, in just a couple of minutes I had the water to my leaking irrigation system completely shut off ... saving me countless dollars. Thanks so much for the well done and concise video to help me out of a big problem.
hello, it been about three or four weeks since i seeded my lawn, my lawn is thin, it has bare spots and about week ago i reseeded bare spots and these seed started to grow. Should i carry out my first now now or wait for reseeded grass to be a bit stronger? thanks
Thanks Billy, glad it helped. Welcome to KC. BTW lawn seeding season is end of Aug through Sept. You can completely renovate a lawn at that time if you want to tackle it. Let us know if we can help.
You say in the video to do this in the morning. Why in the morning? If temps dip below freezing during the night, wouldn't it be better to set the timer for the sprinkler to whatever time the forecast says it will freeze?
Good question. We are basically saying the same thing. The coldest time of the night will be at dawn. We are talking about watering at that time. This works for frosts not necessarily for a hard freeze with several hours below freezing. Good luck
Thanks Frank, I still really like it. I wish the cut quality was a bit better and more suction for leaf pick up but I may be a perfectionist. All in all very happy
Unfortunately Yes, most of the time we find the shut off in the house when there is no backflow device. But there is no rule on that. When there is no backflow device the system was probably installed by someone who didn’t understand what they were doing and the rules go out the window. Good luck.
Thanks for the video. This saved my butt big time. Had a sprinkler pipe burst in the middle of the night in 20 degree weather and was able to shut off the supply before it cost me a fortune and eroded half my property. Extremely grateful!
Thanks for this video! Extremely helpful, I reviewed multiple videos and this was the only one that looked similar to my setup which was the source of the leak. Thanks again.
Sorry I didn’t show that better. I am turning a small valve in each port to a 45 degree angle. On the side of each port is a screwdriver slot to allow this. By turning it to an angle it allows any water trapped in there to get out and not freeze. Hope this helps
I have the ball valve turned off. I turn the screwdriver slots (3) on top of the valve 45 degrees. With the main valves at 45 degrees solid streams of water come out of the 3 ports. Why does that happen? Is there a port underneath?
In the Kansas City area Sept is the best time to reseed if you need to thicken your lawn. We are also pretty dry right now so watering 1 inch per week will help it bounce back too.
if your lawn looks like the photo in your back drop and it does not appear to be coming back based on what you said what should you do? just verticut in new seed or some prep first?
In this case there was no erosion and the ground was fairly level. So the solution was to mow low the day before and water deeply the afternoon before seeding. Next day we aerated one pass then verticut one pass. Spread seed evenly and then a starter fertilizer. Worked all that in with another pass of the verticutter in the opposite direction and started watering to keep damp. Fescue seed will germinate in 14-21 days depending on soil temp and moisture. good luck
Hi Pablo! In the winter we turn off the water supply, use an air compressor to remove all the water from the system, and leave the test ports open as a procaution. This will prevent any freeze damage to the system.
Does the area have to be mulched? I just removed the top layer of grass/weeds and I'm creating a new planting area. While I'm working on the hardscape (retaining wall), I was thinking of putting something on the bare ground so weeds don't take over. There is nothing planted there yet. Thank you.
I did some research and agree the Toro is almost over engineered as a robust electric mower except for one key component the throttle assembly is poorly made I had a unit arrive with it broken from the factory because the cheap plastic locking guide. instagram.com/p/CPdVcELFJMe/
Hi Christopher, thanks so much for your comment and for sharing your experience! I watched your linked video, that's extremely frustrating. Hopefully, this is a feature they will upgrade in the future so others don't experience the same!
I live in Minnesota. I plan to put winterizer in my backyard that gets filled up with leaves which I plan to mulch (and then bagged for yard waste) via lawn mower before snow. I plan to apply Scott’s winterguard mid sept, then water after 24-48 hours. The leaves start to fall probably 3rd or 4th week of sept. If I mulch the leaves, I hope that the fertilizer would have had its effect for the winter since mulching every week in oct is quite brutal. Snow would start the last week of Oct on an avg here. I hope it would not harm the winterization of the grass. Please confirm?
yes that should work. If the ground isn’t frozen the turf can take up the nutrients. You don’t have to wait to water since there is no weed control involved. Water right away if convenient. Mulch the leaves if you can but the fertilizer should be in solution and in the soil after 1 or 2 waterings. Then if you have to bag or blow the leaves off you can. I hope this helps.
