The Tony Award®-winning Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company creates badass theatre that highlights the stunning, challenging, and tremendous complexity of our world. For over 40 years, Woolly has maintained a high standard of artistic rigor while simultaneously daring to take risks, innovate, and push beyond perceived boundaries. One of the few remaining theatres in the country to maintain a company of artists, Woolly serves an essential research and development role within the American theatre. Plays premiered here have gone on to productions at hundreds of theatres all over the world and have had lasting impacts on the field. Currently co-led by Artistic Director Maria Manuela Goyanes and Interim Managing Director Ted DeLong, Woolly is located in Washington, DC, equidistant from the Capitol and the White House. Located in Washington, D.C., Woolly stands upon the ancestral homeland of the Nacotchtank whose descendants belong to the Piscataway peoples.
At 00:36 we get a glimpse of the 'octoroon', a young blonde woman. Whites were nervous about octoroons in the Pre-Civil War South. Octoroons could almost always pass for full white. Many were indeed green-eyed blondes.
There is some profanity and references to sexual acts. Depending on the teen and their parent's comfort level, could be appropriate for high school age and above.
It would be interesting to see how an Octoroon of Afro -American, One eighth European would be perceived by the Afro-American community as well as the European community and other ethnicities.
--- The themes explored in this play are definitely worth our attention. The two male leads give lovely, nuanced, naturalistic performances, as does the actor playing a largely silent household servant. And, considering its title, the play itself is surprisingly sentimental. The playwright, though. really should have enlisted someone other than himself to direct the play. An objective voice is needed to trim the unnecessarily lengthy script. And the projections - text messages as well as surtitles to translate the non-English segments of dialogue - were, unfortunately, largely illegible, even in the relatively intimate Woolly space. Nonetheless, seeing PUBLIC OBSCENITIES is recommended. ---
Sad that it didnt last on Bway inspite of its critical acclaim. Someone like LaVerne Cox wld have kept the doors open. But the trailer looks like a Tyler Perry Product. Perhaps that's why people did not flock to it.
@@kellicvred he really should have won, but the sad thing is that he fell ill and was out of the show during a chunk of the Tony voting weeks and voters didn't get to see him. (He posted about it online)They are not allowed to vote for performances they have not seen. I so feel for him because he lays himself bare on that stage and gives the best male lead performance in a musical on Broadway right now.
Wow. No wonder you have 6 likes on a 4 year old black and white video. Everyone big and small had to rip on the greatest president in American history just to suck the d*ck of the establishment and get their paychecks and blue check marks on social media.
