I just did mine. I did remove the window weather strip. It allows me more space and I was able to the part that you push. I nudge it a little bit and open the door from the inside. Thank you for the video it gave me an idea on how to open my door.
Make sure the window is completely down. Insert the rod in the corner so it wont touch the glass. I just did this yesterday and was able to open the door. Try sliding the rod only 3-4" down instead of the 8-10" I mentioned in the video. I recently discovered that 3-4" to release the cable is all you need to unlock the door. Good Luck!
Thank you for an absolutely superb video, saved me hours of trial and error. One quick question I have, when I slid this top block with the S button off the gear lever, a plastic ball fell out from underneath it. It is a small a ball with a hole in it. I looked at the unit and at your video and I totall cannot figure out where it is coming from. Maybe you know?
Thanks for saving me frustration however the fix is sudden past this but i noticed that when installing the new latch be sure that the CABLE ISNT RESTING AGAINST the machanism because this is what jams the door lock and does not allow the door to open (SIC).
Its taken nearly 6 months for me to get the back off this camera :) I'm finally at the stage where I can fit the new door but stumped by how to do it, you say put it in at an angle but that seems impossible, never trying this again haha but thanks for making the video!!
Hi, Thank you so much. Do you know if this works as well with a 2004 jaguar xj8? I started having "Gearbox Fault" in the dash evetime i suddenly accelerate, or when I need to change from reverse to gear "quick", then the message comes and it feels like it puts third gear and doesnt change from there. I can tell its 3rd gear because when that happens and I am stopped, it takes and more work for the car to start going forward, alternatively when I am in the highway and that happens, you can feel and see the RPM going higher at faster speeds (50-55 mph) without that much accelerating because is not changing gears. Once that happens I have to pull over, turn off the car and turn it back on, afterwards the message goes away and the car shift gears. But I have to be driving carefully because I am afraid that will happen again. I was thinking that maybe the transmission was giving up but this vide made me think it could just be the shifter. Do you have any other thoughts or ideas on why Gearbox Fault message might come up? Appreciate your video and thanks in advance for your help. I am not very savvy with cars but I love trying to work on them and learn. Thank you.
I just bought one of these in april. Done a buncha work to it but now that its all done its got the gearbox fault for d4 switch malfunction. Will go into gear if i shift all the way into 2nd then back to drive. Could this be a linkage issue the cable doesnt seem to move much after going into drive.

Hi guys my x type auto goes into drive but not fully. Sometimes it drives forward but sometimes it doesn’t. I’m gonna check the cable. Can someone tell me if I can replace the j gate shifter for the newer facelift gear shifter. Is that possible, any advice would be much appreciated, kind regards
Sounds more like your shifter cable has too much play. The cable can be tightened or replaced (mine was from eBay) if it's too rusty. You already saw the shifter cable's linkage to the gearbox in my video. The shifter cable's linkage to the transmission is located underneath between the front bumper and the driver's side tire under a 4"x8" curved metal splash shield. There are only three hex bolts holding the cover in place. I sold my Jag to my friend so I cannot provide pics until he takes it out this spring. Good Luck!
I not sure I'd replace an older shifter with a newer shifter model as you may open a new can of worms because the newer wire harness may not be compatible.
My mother-in-law has the same car, her car would not go into gear so I took it apart and with out the top trim and support it will go into gear fine. Just want to know if that's the same trouble you were having?
I had three issues: a broken plastic locking mechanism which I JB welded; a disconnected wire which I soldered: and a loose shifter cable which I replaced. It sounds like you have a loose shifter cable since removing the trim temporarily resolves your issue. Eventually that won't work as the cable will continue to have more play and will result in no longer moving the transmission gears via the linkage arm. Read my reply to S B to resolve this.

Dear sir, my 1999 S-type jag does not reverse. The lever can be pushed to reverse but car does not reverse. Can this fix the problem? Please kindly help cos l am going nuts!!!
It's probably a worn shifter cable. On my '06 X-Type it's underneath the car between the bottom firewall to the transmission clutch near the driver's front tire. Try tightening it first so there's no play. If that doesn't work, you may have to replace the entire shifter cable (eBay). As soon as the weather warms up here, I'll post another vid as to how to replace the shifter cable.
I think this may be my issue. We replaced blower motor, resistor and resistor plug... Now when we turn heat on it only stays in 45seconds to 2 minutes before shutting off by itself. Dont know what else it could be!
@@spekulatius1210 yes actually I did solve it. Turns out the resistor we put in was bad. So I changed that out and the problem is solved. Hope this helps!
The car was only going into reverse. No forward gears worked. Once I repaired the shifter, the underlying issue turned out to be a loose shifter cable which I eventually replaced.
@@locprincessasmr Don't replace your transmission! The transmission is not the issue. The problem is likely your shifter cable is so loose that it is no longer moving the linkage arm which puts the transmission into the gears you want.
@@djwreckit5282 Once I replace the loose shifter cable. The transmission ran fine. I eventually traded my Jag for a Saab 9-3 with my buddy. He loves the Jag and it's been his daily driver. Good trade all around.
After this video, I was able to drive it around town without any issues. Over the next several months, I was not able to shift the gearbox back into park as easily. Moving the shifter into drive, neutral and reverse, was no problem but getting it into park was not happening. I could only park it in neutral on a flat surface and had to place chucks on the tires. The Pandemic came and I got busy at work (hospital) so I put the car away. I finally got caught up and I discovered the issue was the shifter cable was worn so I replaced it. I'll post how that's done once the weather warms up here.
My underlying issue turned out to be a worn out shifter cable. Over the years, the cable became loose. Once I replaced the shifter cable(eBay), the jag was working again.
The wire harness to the gearbox will likely differ. I'd attach the 2014 XK wire harness first to see if they fit before dismantling everything. Good Luck!
Sorry but I have no idea if Jaguar used the same gearbox for both the X-type and the S-type. Apparently, Anna Mote from an earlier post believe they did.
Hi, my jaguar xtype 3.0 2004 is reporting engine and gear box fault. The revs are so high. When diagnosed it reported the tps, I have changed it but the problem is still there. What can be a reason?
