Back to the butt crack area...The deck and bottom don't lap on the inside of the swallow? The cloth only meets at the hard edge? I love how neat this looks and the strength I guess is fine?
Yes, what you couldn't see from this video is that on the deck we have 2 layers of 6oz cloth. The first layer does line the swallow very tightly. you are correct that we didn't wrap the swallow tail, but is very rare there will be damage because of this. And most likely if there is impact on that area, damage would occur with or without the extra single layer. Thank you for your questions, never hesitate to ask!
such a cool video!! I am looking forward to watching the next ones already. I am myself a shaper from Morocco (HN Shapes), still a small community here so always very happy to watch and learn from people shaping from all over the world! Cheers guys
Thank you so much! I have been following on IG and RU-vid for a while and waiting for you to do longer videos! 🙏 amazing skill and beautiful craftsmanship!
I enjoyed this glassing presentation. I’ve only done ding repair for surfboards but lots of boats and semi truck hoods. Loved the smell and hated the itch. Cheers.
The more things change...... when I was a kid interested 80s I had a six2 skip Frye swallow tail twin fin. Looked just like that board. Best board I ever had . So much so I had a florida shaper recreat for me. Still ride it whenever it gets overhead.
100% subscribed to this. These videos are incredible, you’re inspiring me to try shaping and glassing a board myself. Please upload more videos like this, would love to see the full process from a blank to a finished board in one video.
I had a helper who turned us on to the resin we use to glue white marble and other light colored stones because it won’t yellow like epoxy. He glassed most of his brother’s custom boards at Inner Rhythm surfboards. Silmar is the brand name.
When I was 14 I tried to make a surf board. Bought a book and all the shaping and lay up supplies. It did not turn out very good. That was in the mid 70's.
@@Timponehawaii A little. I remove to much foam in the front and the resin started kicking off early so had too much resin for the amount of glass. Put it away after half dozen trips to the beach. So Ca. Redondo beach. My friends did rock break of Palos Verdes but never into the sport that far. My thing was dirt bike riding. About 7 years ago when to Kaui and rode 2 days on dirt by a company called Moto Hawaii. That was fun. Hawaiian Ice for the dirt following the "Powerline rd." bisecting the island. Very slippery.
Yes, I catalyzed the color slow, but figured it would kick by the time I got to the clear side. I was pretty happy how it turned out, my first time attempting something like that.
Cool video Jeff, really enjoyed the commentary. You are a master craftsman. Awesome to see your son following in your footsteps. Keep the videos coming.
These videos are great. Watch them over and over, learnt a lot. Also like the commentary, much better than music. I use at sealer at the end, but apply it with a foam roller. Needs work when finished. Will try a cloth on the next one. Thank you for the time and effort to put these videos together. Watching skilled board builders is so good 🇦🇺👏
These young guys are wasteful and lazy as hell. If they were buying the resin and working per diem, I promise they would be a whole lot more conservative with product. Go watch Jack Reeves, now that’s a glasser and fine businessman!
Yes Reeves is a master! He's been doing it for 150 yrs! In the video description we explain we're laminating 3 layer of 6oz cloth, so we need more resin than normal for full saturation 👍
was tripping when i saw all the glass going on the bottom then when u flipped the board made sense .. glassed for yrs at Ocean works and for Bill Barnfield @ Raging isle in Haleiwa , i always wrapped my rails full single bottom double top that way u get 3 layers of glass on the rail .. eggshell theory 35-40% less breakage weight isn't even noticeable .. watching this gave me that warm an fuzzy feeling u get walking into the laminating room lol . makes me want to build a board
Very cool brother! We also utilize the "eggshell" method as you call it, very strong rails/boards. This board specifically is a Tow board so extra glass bottom and deck (5-6 rail wraps, tapered). stoked to get your board building juices flowing 🤙
