people say they're unlucky because they don't want to admit they have a skill issue. I say I'm unlucky because I know I have a skill issue. We are not the same.
With this analysis of how you got lucky with these completions, I also think it would be very interesting to peek the flip side by taking a look at fails (or deaths in general) where you just BARELY hit a spike or something. Would those deaths not technically count as unlucky?
@@bluecore1027 it would definitely be tough to find a collection of close deaths but if I somehow manage to I could make a video out of it. I would def consider dying by 1 or 2 frames unlucky (for me) since I consider surviving by 1 or 2 frames is lucky
@@nickTria_ I didn't really think barely dying is something that you could make a video out of (apologies if I was implying that). I guess this was just an interesting thought I wanted to put in for you to think about or consider. Doesn't bother me at all if it doesn't work out in application!
If you are playing a level that requires so many timings that are so few frames, you can only be so precise and are bound to be within a frame or two on some of the timings. Especially with most input devices being imperfect, it’s hard to blame that on lack of skill. Cool video idea though! I might do this myself.
I hate naming names but brad on tiktok is a great example of "unluckies victor" mentality. in reality, he made a massive jump in difficulty to zodiac and was surprised when it took him over 100k attempts and he kept dying from nerves at the end. jumps are stupid and it should be encouraged to work your way up the ladder like a normal person. the other issue is if you make a jump to a top50, chances are, you wont be able to do any of the levels around it on the list without the same pain.Z
The biggest thing about luck in GD, is the fact that it's a deterministic game, meaning if you click and let go at the exact same time, every time, you'll get the exact same results, only changing based on FPS. That's how bots work, it records your inputs, and replays them exactly, every click and release, every hold, every drop, to perfectly re-create what you did, and basically play it out for you, again. With that, the only thing that could be truly classified as lucky or not, would be if you got something like an insane lag spike that couldn't have been predicted. Luck, nowadays, is a term used to describe playing poorly, as opposed to describing something outside of their control that happened, a rather more deterministic word, from it's true definition, rather just to be used to describe a good or bad outcome, as opposed to one outside of their control.
I don't think I agree with the idea that people are using the word luck "wrong". Even if I personally avoid using in the same context for those reasons
being unlucky makes sense. Dying past 80% on a level at least 20 times is unlucky. its subjective not objective you cant control what luck actually is. beating a level requires some degree of luck
What about, for example, a 240hz frame perfect timing? There isn't a single person who can get 100% consistent with them, so I'd argue passing them is not always within the player's control
@@turtlgd definitely involves some luck. The way I think of gd is that there’s a paradox where the better you are the less luck is involved on the player side (more control over your icon), but the more luck is involved on the level side (stupidly hard clicks like you mentioned)
It is luck how good someone is already with nerve control. Because I know there are people that play this game who have never had a crazy issue with nerve control. I understand your point but our base natural abilities aren’t something we control. Building them are but weren’t not all dealt the same cards. Ik your point though.
@@SpiritofPoison that’s what worked best for me. I got a really big nerve control boost after beating Neon Mixtape Tour which is 4 min long. After that I’ve been able to play much better while I’m nervous
Although, I did get unlucky with the last ball in Acropolis because every time I practiced it, I got through it 98% of the time, then I died there 10+ times in regular runs. Thats unlucky.
@@ptyw. I would definitely consider dying by 1 or 2 frames unlucky. I just didn’t focus on that bc that wasn’t really what I wanted the video to be about
@@nickTria_ idk to me it just seemed like you just said getting unlucky isnt possible and that people are just making excuses, when thats just objectively not true. yeah id argue a lot of people use getting unlucky as an excuse but luck is 100% a factor. If you have 90% consistency with an input and you die to it 4 times in a row, thats bad luck, you cant really put that on skill moreso luck. its a balance but bad luck and good luck are both very real things and this video portrays bad luck as just an excuse
I've felt the same way about luck in GD for a while now, like the player is in full control of playing a level and yet it's near impossible to do tight timings 100% of the time so it might as well be luck even if it technically isn't
I normally still say both lucky and unlucky when explaining my completions because i have no other words for 15 deaths at the end ship on cataclysm (unlucky) and only two deaths past 80 in future funk II (lucky)
I have a request Tria. If you haven't start any different extreme demon or whatever, but I would love to see you play Neutra (if you have balls to do it)
I remember i had a really unlucky death at 95% on 8o. It still gives me trauma. I remember dying to a transition with one click remaining, i fied to a 2.2 bug, i died to the pillar with the cube portal. Still get trauma about it.
I think it's a silly thing to correct people about. Yeah it's technically wrong to call it "unlucky", but at the end of the day no one's arguing that their bad experience was ACTUALLY unfavorable random chance instead of them messing up. If you call an experience "unlucky" everyone immediately knows what you mean.
When it comes to saying that something is unlucky, at least from my experience it comes when you die to an easy section or to a section that you never die to. For example, I was playing Acu yesterday and died to the 88% (I think) dash orb twice, a place I usually pass with ease. I think that's pretty unlucky. The better word would be a stupid death but honestly it sometimes feels completely out of your control.
