I ran one of these for a couple of summers back around ‘79 and ‘80. This was in CA in fields near Dixon and Davis. It was a lot of fun and a lot of work! The model I operated may have been a 1068 or 1069.

Wow, looks a little complicated but also very fun. I always wondered if this kind of set Up may help to improve the way a truck runs, i mean, if you only had a 5 speed trasmision whit a 2 speed rear end how difierent the trucks performance could be? what confuses me is you have 2 sticks and yours is 5X4 and the gear pattern doesnt look like too many gears to play with,when theres the normal 1 stick that has the 9-10-13-15-& 18-speeds with a range change switch and splitter button,so are these simillar with the same amount of gears,just using 2 sticks to get all of them or are these way different where you dont even get a 9-speed or a 10-speed like the trucks that have 1 stick,& is it harder to shift these with or without the clutch and do these require double clutch or not

@@allenbowick4716 it has to be very funny driving these trucks, like taking your pick Up to the super market and throwing 8 o 9 gears every block and using the air brake pedal every time you see a friend instead of the horn. Still dont understant why you should get a gas engine truck whit big trasmition if you could get a diesel engine in it. Thanks!!
@itsstillkickin4630
@itsstillkickin4630 3 года назад
They were more common than diesel in their day in that size truck. It pulls 30,000 in the box (about 50 gross) regularly. That's our standard load of potatoes. Sometimes quite a bit more if needed. You don't get the hard pull on 10% or steeper grades unless you're down in the bottom of "int" range (4-7th gear). Without the gears, that engine wouldn't be enough, but with enough gears, any engine is enough. I've driven straight 6 gas twin sticks - they'll haul quite a bit as well.
@santopiantado1161
@santopiantado1161 2 года назад
@@itsstillkickin4630 wow, i didn't know gas eniges were capable of that. But as you said its a matter of tons of gears. I wonder why those trucks wasn't equiped whit 453's, 471's, 6v53's Detroits or v378, v555 or v903 engines; they were very common in that era and i tend to think that they should be more eficient than any gas engine in therms of hp, torque and fuel consumption. Never drove the old pattern, but the layout always interested me. But I gotta ask if you have any info on that clutch brake? If the brake isn't on the clutch pedal, does the clutch itself engage towards the top still? And was this something common for the time period?. Very cool video, thank you.
@itsstillkickin4630
@itsstillkickin4630 3 года назад
It's not in the clutch housing at all. It's not really a "Clutch brake" per se, but a countershaft brake. Same end result. There's an aluminum air piston that pushes against the countershaft and stops it.

@@Hitman-ds1ei Look for a cover on the left side of the trans, not very big, has 4 bolts. If you take it off and find a round bore for a piston, that's it. You just need to supply air through the cover (1/8 line?) from the valve you mount on the shifter. All the parts are still available new. I had to replace that piston and valve last year.

How many times the driveshaft turns compared to the number of times the axle turns. It would be 5.13 turns of the driveshaft to one turn of the axle. Gives the engine and transmission a torque advantage. Street cars usually have a "taller" ratio of around 2.73 or so.

@@itsstillkickin4630 thanks a lot, now i know what you are talking about.
