I built Vertical Motion to help mid-career professionals become high-impact executives. My goal is to train and launch an entirely new generation of authentic, empathetic, and audacious leaders into the workforce.

If you have 10+ years of work experience, have lead teams of people, and have a goal to someday be in the C-Suite, then this channel will hopefully be full of useful content for you. I talk about how to transform as an individual, how to gain and practice the executive skills you need, and how to build and activate a network that will help you find the executive roles that are right for you. More than 70% of all executive jobs are never posted online, so your network is your net worth.

Wow this is very useful! I always was told to succeed in silence which I feel is true in some cases but I really do need to learn to talk highly of myself because when I’m asked that question in interviews I always get lost and don’t know what to say. Thank You

Extremely useful! Although I don’t believe I’m quite ready for the executive level, I can admit that I do wait for management to recognize my efforts and reward me accordingly. It’s generally challenging for me to articulate my value to an organization. Thanks!

I was on a pip as an EA. I had made large mistakes when I was checked out from just getting divorced and they listed out real things to improve on and I did. There is hope but yeah if you were blindsided with it and the goals are vague I would absolutely check out

All BS. A PIP is a guarantee termination. Best approach is to just spend 100% of your time looking for a new job and keep collecting a paycheck for doing nothing. Don’t give them anything. No meetings. Don’t sign anything. Don’t say a word. Don’t complete a transition plan. Nothing.

My boss ( who was not even my past manager at the time), put me on a two week "PIP" without ever giving me one on one meetings before, just out of the blue basing his performance review on feedback from senior techs, despite the fact that in almost a year and a half I only had maybe 3 escalations from customers and not serious ones, and basing it all on an oral exam I had taken with two senior techs that were overlooking the exam performance. Now, whenever they asked me to be on pager duty, I would gladly do it, now per company policy because of my "low performance" I am not able to pursue other positions within the company.

Too Good!! I've heard about the impact & power of 'Storytelling' in getting hired at interviews but before that which such skill or trait is essential to get called in for interviews as freshers.. Does meaningful conversations or something like it works on LinkedIn to engage with recruiters.. what should be the steps taken to reach the doors of interview process...
@tomcoxvm
@tomcoxvm Месяц назад
Storytelling is how humans build trust with one another. Stories can be shared one to one, or one to many. LinkedIn is a great place to share stories that would make recruiters want to add you to a list of interviews.

I was placed ona PIP last year. As a Manager, I believed (and used it before) to get people back to where we needed them. Never started it with the intention of firing anyone. Iwas therefore oblivious to that when I was placed on one. Acted professional, did all it was aked from me. My manager went on to lie on the report, saying I did not deliver on areas where I did, also deciding on my placing me on the next step of the PIP two weeks before agreed. I informed him and HR that I was going to keep trying under the new terms, and the next day he calls me and threatens me with immediate termination if I do not quit, laid in bare his intentions. Filled a complaint with HR and the independent board hired by the company to mediate such cases. Company refuses to stop the PIP, acknowledges the wrong-doing by firing the manager one month after I left, but I was refused the chance to stay. Also, company asks the independent board to stay aside on this case. PIPs are not bad, but people and organizations can be.

One of our managers has been placed on a PIP. He says that he welcomes it as a chance to improve. However, his attitude says otherwise. He’s micromanaging the staff and everyone is walking around on eggshells now because he’s making everyone else feel incompetent. The saddest part is that he doesn’t see his own behavior is not helping his situation. I will be very surprised if he survives his PIP because he’s now lost the support of his team. Low morale and a toxic work environment.

Great video! Thank you for addressing the proverbial "elephant in the room" here. PIP is just a cute name for "write up" (I even worked for a company one time that called these "coaching memos"-🤣🤣🤣). No matter what fancy name they give it, it means the same: your days are numbered and the company wants to cover themselves from lawsuits. That being said, a write up/PIP can be valid in rare instances. But it should clearly state an actual company infraction, from the company handbook-not something the manager just made up as they went along.

Great advice as usual. When I was put on a PIP I basically use the entire 3 months as a paid job search. If a supervisor is taking the time effort to put you on a pip, they've already compiled all the paperwork they need to fire you.

Thanks for the video. I have quarterly (video) meetings with my boss' boss at a large company. I want to be promoted but so does everybody else but open positions are quite rare. Both my boss and her boss are corporate creatures: always guarded, giving evasive canned answers, faked empathy, etc... These skip-level meetings feel largely pointless.

I was put on a PIP, because I refused to falsify my metrics. i did my work honestly, while my coworkers were doing fraudulant documentation to meet their metrics. They were also working off the clock on nights and weekends- something that i refused to do. Management was aware of what was happening, but looked the other way.

The executive presence of an executive is not present when it’s not there. I could not agree more. How much do you charge to teach people to become leaders in charge? Any discount? I’m kind of leader already, but all I need now is some followers. Thanks.

PIPs can be used when an employee for whatever reason is underperforming and the casual chats, like, "how can we help you improve" have already taken place. People fall of on performance all the time, personal problems, family issues, addictions etc. There are few things in life we can control, one of them is our reaction to constructive feedback, I would suggest trying to rectify the issues and proving that you can do it, otherwise you should just walk every time you don't like feedback and see where that mindset leads you.
