If by 'shoot herself in the foot' you mean trained, improved her skills and technique, and maintained her health in an effort to defend her title and better her personal best, then I do agree. It is extraordinarily rare to find someone who continues to push the limits of achievement in spite of having such few competitions during a season; Truly a testament to her fortitude and unique physical abilities. I have learned over the years that those who write the rules and regulations are also the same ones who can write the exceptions to those rules. It is easy to write in a provision that allows someone who has a season time or distance that is better than 50% of the competing field to have an opportunity to challenge in that final. I believe that far more people are disappointed in not seeing this contest than those that want the supremacy of the unbroken rule.
The only thing that matters is that especially in the 400m, Sydney will probably run a faster time in winning the "B" 400m race than the winner of the "A" 400m race. That would be kind of embarrassing for the DL head honchos.
