The tracking + hands were done by another artist however I have done this type of tracking before and believe from memory that the method was: Camera track >>>> Object track of arms / fists using basic geometry such as cylinders >>>> position the claws to frame the first frame (1001 for this) >>>>>> constrain the claws group to be a child of the object track (or put the claws group underneath the object tracked geo in the outliner) >>>>>>>> Now the claws move along with the object tracked geometry >>>>>>> Create groups ONTOP of the claws group, look through the render camera and animate the TOP group with extra key frames as a form of manual object tracking/ rotomation >>>>>>> Finally animate the blades separately inside the groups. Rotomation (animating 3d characters over the actors from the render camera) was completed for all the characters but I believe this was mostly done at the end from my requests for lighting / render aswell as for aiding the FX artists blood simulations.

For some reason whenever I add aiAtmosphereVolume the MAX density I can have is literally 0.001, anything higher and it's too much... What's even more bizarre is everything in my scene is huge.
This could be a few things but without testing I couldnt be sure. There's 2 things I can think of which is if your scene is huge the it might be due to your camera default clipping planes, go into the attribute settings of your camera and change min clip to 1.0 and then far clip to a huge number like 1 million. What might be occuring is that your scene is so large that maya is trying to calculate the fog but most is being clipped out. Other then that perhaps change your global scene scale settings from cm to metres and try again, a few of the tools in maya operate in non-cm scale which is mildly annoying, I don't know if these have been changed but I certainly remember around the 2010s that nCloth, bifrost and MASH were calculated in metres so you have to adjust everything for those accordingly or change your global scene scale to metres
Hi, unfortunately for this video "Maya Tutorial: Lighting for VFX Part 2" (and the 2 other parts to this video) I cannot upload any of the files to my patreon or other download pages as I do not have full rights to the footage, the 3d scene is also not mine, I mention this in part 1. Thank you for subscribing to patreon there are 10 files available to download which are from 10 of my videos here on youtube. I do have another shorter VFX lighting video for maya which has files that comes with it, you can find it here and then the files on patreon ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--sY14LFruNo.html I hope that helps!
Hehe, I made the mistake *to not* combine all the separate geometries. Then I had to wain for like twenty minutes... even though it says _"press ESC to stop render"_ it'll just go on. Typically. Although, I can't find where to change the format from .exr? EXR is not my first choice of image type in this case.
my video is a bit long and it is not of good quality when I track it in one piece. Can I track it in sections and export it as a single piece in pftrack ?
Hey, ray cast, how do they use multihdri projections in the industry for moving objects? Or how do they do it. If yes, would like to have a video on that. Thanks.
I have learned to hate the Render Setup system. However, my current employer prefers that I use it. My problem? I have a few. * The layers tend to be unstable. They break frequently, much more so than the legacy layers do. * Doing things in this system tends to be more complicated. There are more steps to do the same things, and I cannot see the advantage. Any ideas?
Unfortunately I have no ideas around it, I do agree with you but I've only had to use these layers few times. I mostly use houdini for rendering in the last few years. 2020 was probably the last year I used maya for rendering and the largest project I worked on we stuck to using legacy layers... The smallest project I used the newer layer system but it was manageable as it was object replacement work.
I've only ever used one HDR plugin which was a long time ago (8 years or more ago maybe) which was called something like HDRI light studio... It was ok for lighting floating solo objects in commercials that needed specific highlights but not useful enough to keep using/ paying for so Ive never used plugins.
Hi, Thanks for the video.Question ; say i have a footage where I start shooting ( Free move ) than i angle the cam from right to leftbut than back to right. How would I go about this situation.i have my footage and I do use the hide left and right but that does not seem to give me a proper track.Your advice please ?
Its only $4, think about the hours I spent making and uploading this aswell as the other videos. Not to mention the knowledge im sharing that I've been gathering for over a decade.
@@repkicks1347 I cant remember, I have my own library of models ive bought over the last 15 years, it might be from cg trader or this small indie CG car website. But Id imagine it cost more than $4.
Yeah there is, to gain access you have to sign up to patreon for at least 1 month (any of the tiers) to get access. Access is then sent via patreon message or email to the discord group. www.patreon.com/raycast
Thanks mate! I really appreciate it, I don't advertise the channel anywhere or include my name so I get minimal views but hopefully the people that see the videos find them useful! Thanks for watching!
Timestamps are in the description! The huge long number lines being added to the numbers was just a glitch with my maya at the time, normally it would incrementally add a single digit. For one on one mentoring please email: raycasttutorials@gmail.com To support the channel and gain other features go to: www.patreon.com/raycast Companies do vary in how they operate so these are just a few common methods I've seen across the last decade! I hope this video is helpful!
they seem to work fine on my machine (houdini 18 from maya 2019). Perhaps the issue is due to the frame I exported on which is 1001, so try shift to that frame number in your scene prior to importing. If the issue still persists could you send a screenshot to raycasttutorials@gmail.com . As another alternative I can always send you a link to the maya scene files so if you have maya you can export from there in your desired settings, I hope thats ok.
If I was working on a small project on my own I wouldnt, however for large films Ive worked on you get given alot of shots, so if you work as a lighting technical director it can take too much time and money to keep re-rendering all your shots (rendering costs the company alot, especially cloud rendering) so its best to do alterations like this in nuke, then re-submit your work to supervisors/ clients until a composite gets approved! Hope that clears things up : )
I've just noticed theres lagging/ skipping in the first half of the recording! Sorry, I think my graphics card driver was out of date/ causing issues! Timestamps are in the description! Thanks, glad you liked it and ill see what I can (in terms of a nuke tutorial) but you might have to wait a little, I didnt have nuke installed at the time of recording.

The techniques I display I've used in TV series and films in years gone by.
The background was a still image so there was no need for tracking. I do not use after effects, after effects its not a primary tool in the VFX industry.

To load the Xgen attribute/ side tab in maya, hold down spacebar, go to "generate", then "Xgen Editor". I forgot to add a comment saying this in the video!.. There is also an "xgen library" of which you can load pre-made hair setups to learn from. For Xgen hair clothing instead of guide placement (in the setup for creating a description) I used "using attributes controlled by expressions" rather than placing guides, this is so I could just have random tiny hairs across the entire surface.
its in the roto section, I do not have the software installed currently so I cannot check but you can import a bezier shape or matte somewhere in the mask section.
