I currently have Benjamin Moore Arborcoat exterior oil-based semi-solid stain on exterior pine accent logs on my home. It has been on my logs for about 2 years. It still looks great, no peeling, no chipping, just some fading. I tried applying Benjamin Moore Woodluxe oil-based semi-solid stain over the existing stain in a test area, but it did not seem to cover well, after about one month there were areas that looked like it had washed off. All of the instructions for stains these days seem to call for removal of the existing stain, getting down to bare wood. This is next to impossible for for me to do. Is there an oil-based semi-solid stain that I can apply directly over the existing oil-based semi-solid stain without having to strip the logs to bare wood? Is it possible that the Woodluxe did not cover well because the existing Arborcoat is not sufficiently weathered to accept new stain? Any ideas?

I just stained a deck on a log home and she wanted to get her log home pressure washed. She had several issues one in our area here in Ga not alot of log homes so really hardly anyone experienced to do it. Another was she was told she had to do a soft wash bc high pressure washing would do damage. But i see you using a high pressure washer are you not worried about messing up the chinging and other problems that could happen?

You just confirmed my largest concern with Sikkens (now PPG). The prep required in 10 years when I neglect to apply another coat in a few years! I used Cabot Astr. Timber Oil when I first installed my Cedar siding and it held up pretty well. Pretty faded 10 years now but I can't complain. One thing I do like is that it does not have a polyurethane or nail polish film. Going to be re-staining this year. What stain do you commonly use with good results that doesn't form a film? Great video by the way!! Much appriciated!

I’m a painting contractor in PA, and I gotta say, your rocking’ buddy. So, Sashco is a water base product based on washing it in the sink? I worked with it once years ago, and remember it being an oil.. I’m still a Sikkens guy, but I like what I’m seeing. Fantastic work!

We do this all day long, spend some time running tape/paper, tape and insert poly over windows, and place carboard shields to avoid overspray mess. Overspray is best managed by going the distance on prep, never leaving a trace of spray damage, cutting down from soffits. Backbrushing crew follows the sprayman using 30 inch in-line pole gun with pressure turned way down. Sikkens Primary, and Top coat products superb and stand alone. Good vid !

I don't care if you are using a fine finish tip or not, the fine particles of stain fly everywhere once you have any wind over 3mph.. I've been painting for 30 years and we tape everything up, and that's for water base stain. For oil stain we won't even spray it unless the job if in the middle of nowhere so the stain vapors won't travel and hit something 75 yards away.

After stripping do you recommend the Sikkens 123 (3 step process) or their SRD one-step?

@KuehlIndustrial
@KuehlIndustrial 2 года назад
@@abrammatthew756 I’ve stripped way to many homes over the last 20 years that were failures with Sikkens. Also way overpriced in my opinion.
@KuehlIndustrial
@KuehlIndustrial 2 года назад
Depends on what your looking for as an end result. The 123 process is a film forming finish (like nail polish) that will flake and peel over time. The srd is a penetrating stain and will simply fade out and not flake or peel. Hope this helps
@KuehlIndustrial
@KuehlIndustrial 2 года назад
@@abrammatthew756 I would try wolman deck strip asr (acrylic stain remover). Yes the sikkens is similiar to the Australian Timber Oil.
@KuehlIndustrial
@KuehlIndustrial 2 года назад
@@abrammatthew756 you can also try ABR -American building restoration products out of Wisconsin. They make a product called fast finish remover. It is really just a form of LYE. It is easy to work with on flat surfaces (decks) but vertical surfaces need to have the product continually applied (don’t let it dry).

Cant believe this guy didn't use any tarps or masking. I do this for a living and that is one of the most important things you need to do. Also you'll be much more efficient using a backbrush pole.
@KuehlIndustrial
@KuehlIndustrial 2 года назад
Using the fine finish low pressure tips really allows us to get close to the window frames. We always keep a wet rag on hand to wipe any overspray from the metal cladding. We hand w ash/Razor blade all of the windows upon completion so the windows look like a mirror. Dont get me wrong-Alot of times we do mask everything as you mentioned. Thanks for the recommendation on the back brush pole- Im just old school I guess!! Thanks for the comment
@TheVeganeater

Why not start at the top and work down? Seems like you are constantly fighting gravity and checking the lower stained areas for drips. Start at the top is usually a good rule of thumb.
@KuehlIndustrial
@KuehlIndustrial 2 года назад
Because any drips from the top will show up when the sashco capture stain is applied. I see your valid point. I guess its a horse a piece. I usually like to get the sprayer setup and the brusheds "broken in" on the ground level. Thanks!

I'm curious, how expensive is it to strip and restain a cabin home?
@KuehlIndustrial
@KuehlIndustrial 2 года назад
It all depends on the size and the amount of restoration needed. Access around the house to the logs/siding/gables etc is also another challenge as most houses have landscaping surrounding the house. Our process consists of touching EVERY SQUARE INCH of the surface 6 times! Quality takes time! Thanks!

Hi - Was wondering what sprayer you were using and what tip? Looks amazing.
@KuehlIndustrial
@KuehlIndustrial 2 года назад
I was using a titan 740 electric airless sprayer. (way oversized for the project). You can get away with virtually any airless sprayer over 800 psi. I was using a 212 high efficiency airless tip to cut down on the overspray possibility. smaller tips orfice are best. Remember- its easier to put more stain on then to brush out runs all day with a tip that is too big.

About to stain a new cabin. What brush do you use? I can’t find anything local and our Sashco dealer said use a regular China bristle brush.
@KuehlIndustrial
@KuehlIndustrial 2 года назад
Yes- White China Bristle 4" or 6" block brush. We get ours by the case from Menards ($18.00 each) by the case as we usually use new brushes every single day as the ends get frayed and the Capture Stain/ Cascade Clear is very hard to clean from the brushes. Using a low quality brush will do nothing but make you mad and hate staining!
