“Go woke go broke” is the pinnacle of conservative coping. There is not a single company from Gillette, to Budweiser, to Disney, to Netflix etc. which has ever gone broke from pushing unwanted (Empathy) politics on people. The truth is, just like our politicians, these people (Grin) get paid big money to push things the public hates. The problem is systemic. Should you buy Budweisers crappy beer? No. Is Budweiser going to go broke even if every conservative in the country never bought it again? No. And clearly these companies aren’t worried about “go woke go broke” because they all keep doing it. No one’s broke yet because this is all about the ESG score. ESG Score CEI Score DEI Score all rooted in )ew!sh Every. Fcuking. Time.
@@MinterDial Imagine my surprise when I called my mother (93) yesterday after getting back from Podfest, and she said that she and my brother had been watching me on TV earlier?!? I was baffled at first and then realized that my brother had streamed this interview on her set. She was very impressed! So, thanks again Minter! How often do you get to appear on TV for your mother? and she actually listened! Amazing! She would never have listened to the podcast BUT she listened to the whole thing on TV for sure!
John gave a clear description of the main difference between western religions and estern religions, in that for example in Christianity there is a separation while in Buddhism and in Advaita etc there is no separation. In the Bible in John 1 it says that the Word has created everything. I interpret that as the Word being everything and then it becomes oneness as in Buddhism, but anyway great simple explanation by John. My view is that reality is oneness based on logical reasoning. If there is a separation between two things, then there is a boundary which is a third thing, and since the boundary is separate from the first things, new boundaries are needed and so on in an infinite regression. That doesn't compute in my view so I see oneness as the correct view of reality.
Thanks Anders for your comment. I have often navigated between believing in our dualities (specifically, what I perceive as our inherent paradoxes) and in oneness. Somehow, I regularly find myself affirming the existence of a boundary, to help in identification as well as in crafting a meaningfulness that is within grasp in my lifetime. The battle surely rages on for me.
It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with primary consciousness will probably have to come first. The thing I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing. I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order. My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly. Dr. Edelman's roadmap to a conscious machine is at arxiv.org/abs/2105.10461
Hi Grant, thanks for your thoughtful -- and complex -- comment. The materialisation of -- and the ambition of creating a unified concept around -- consciousness is a wild thought!

This is a great conversation. I am surprised there are only 5K views. That makes it a treasure lol. I am reading a book of Marty Neumeier now. I am setting up a brand that I hope, and I am working on, to be consistent and strong.
@@sidwann8905 I have done so many episodes on branding... I can recommend my interviews with Mark Schaeffer, Rod Banner, Dorie Clark, Kathleen Carroll, John Wall...
Another GREAT life-hack resource is a piece titled The Hatchet Man's Playbook - a LOT of eye-popping, non-obvious stuff! Can't recommend it highly enough!
Hi @Real IK, message from Jan Thompson received: "I hope to have it (Never The Same) up as well as my last documentary (Survival Through Art narrated by Alec Baldwin) on Ben Steele-available for streaming in about 8 weeks..." Watch this space then around end of March 2021!
