I have a passion for teaching online. First learning something that might be quite complicated, then being able to replicate the steps and find a way to come up with an easy to follow tutorial. Sharing knowledge is something I find very exciting. It's all about getting to that aha-moment. It's this small moment where all the various pieces come together and you get this exciting moment of having a puzzle completed.
Over time I've found out that there's a lot of SaaS (Software as a Service, aka online tools with subscriptions), that can be replaced with an open source alternative. Providing lots of benefits. Self Hosting open source software has been quite complicated and something only for developers. But since I've discovered Coolify, there's the potential to self host software for a larger audience.
It depends on your situation whether it's better or worse. Having it self hosted, means all the data is on your own server, so on your own terms as well. You decide the upgrades, how to back it up and so on. With that comes extra responsibility as well. That's the question to ask yourself if that's worth it to you.
There's good reasons to pay for coolify. One of them is to support the creator. Supporting the creator means that he can keep justifying time into making it grow bigger. Another one is with self hosting comes responsibility to secure it yourself as well.
