It has a beat! That piece is great fun to play, i would guess. Really appreciate your work as well as Lully’s. It may be a march, but it creates visions of measured dance. I want to try this on the heretical device, electric guitar.
Is it just me or is the three-note sequence, the "da-da-da" the violins play, an echo, a transposition of laughter? I always hear it as "Ha ha ha", the laughter of the composer at the impudence of the bourgeois gentilhomme, laughing in his face all through the ceremony. Idle thoughts...
The march for the Turkish ceremony is entertainment music. It is entirely instrumental and is intended to be danced. So it’s ballet music. This music is a will of Louis XIV: while the King received the ambassador of the Great Turk, he would have paid little attention and made some derogatory remarks. The King, not to lose face, decided that a play would be composed, in caricature. It was then that the famous ridiculous Turkish ballet was born.
