I am truly living the (Dog Mom) life. As dog mom to 2 Chow Chows (Melo and Lily) and a Caucasian Shepherd (Dean), I wish to share the ways I care for my sweet dogs and how I spend my days with them. Hoping to bring you a bit of joy by showing you how much we love them and treat them as family and not just pets and giving them the best we can just to make sure they are happy and healthy.

I have a chow chow/husky/shepherd mix and I’m jokingly convinced he has 6 coats! 😂 you’re so right about brushing daily. Every single day he wakes up with crazy long bed head laying over his chow chow undercoat (we call it his cotton candy coat)! We switch between a slicker and comb because he didn’t tolerate the furminator but enjoys the other brushes. I tried a detangling spray and it made his chow undercoat shrivel up and matt instantly! It’s been an interesting experience haha

Hi! Oh wow, I bet a chow/husky/shepherd mix pup is super cute! And yes, I can only imagine the coat mix would be very challenging! I’ve never gotten to getting a furminator since I was getting a lot of advice how it ruins their fur :( but the slicker brush and comb combo works for us. I do find a rake to be very helpful with our pups with “6 coats” 😅😉. I can tell your pup is so glad you’re very patient in dealing with his unique coat blend! 😊🐾

I have a 2.5 month old chow chow. He's fine when he's being petted through his pen. But when he's picked up for cuddles or sat down for gentle cuddles nothing rough.. starts to bite crazy. Did this happen with you?
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely Год назад
Hello! At 2.5 months, your chow chow is still trying to navigate his environment and one way to explore it is with his mouth. Puppy biting is normal for his age and you can condition/train him off biting by saying ouch and putting him gently back in his pen every time he bites, turning your back on him and leaving him for a few seconds. That way (with constant repetition) he would soon get/understand that every time he bites, you won’t play with him or give him attention. Puppy play biting is a phase every puppy goes through. Melo is no exception. But with training, time and a lot of patience, he and I got through it. You can also try enrolling him in a puppy training program to get more tips and ideas on how to use positive reinforcement and more importantly, for socialization. I hope this helps! Hugs to your pup! 😊🐾

I am glad you are aware and taking account of the unique temperaments and qualities of both breeds. You just have to be really hands on in making sure they’re well trained and socialized. You will need to allot an equal amount of time for each of them. hot spots solution ? Chow chow
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 2 года назад
Hello! It’s always best to clip fur on and around the hot spot to let the wound breathe and dry out. I use a safe antiseptic like betadine wound spray or solution to clean it twice a day. Others use an e-collar to prevent the pup from licking or scratching the wound. As long as the wound is exposed to air and dry out, it should be okay in about a week. You can also try applying virgin coconut oil after cleaning the wound to help it heal or you can use this: aromapaws.com/hot-spot-solutions/hot-spot-spray to help it heal faster and lessen the itch. But if the hot spot is bigger than you can handle or in an area that’s impossible for you to clip the fur around on, it’s always best to bring your pup to the vet to avoid or prevent infection. Hope this helps. 🙏🏻😊

@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 2 года назад
Hello! Thank you for checking out our video! As for your concerns, Chow Chows really do have a tendency to be stubborn, that’s why early training and conditioning and socialization are always recommended so you get to curb unwanted behaviors as they get older. The good news is, it’s never too late to train your chow although it might take a longer time for him to follow and completely get it, the later his training starts. But Chows are very smart, and I will never put it past them to get something you are training them to do, no matter their age. As long as you use positive reinforcement/rewards based training. Dogs love routines so it is best to be really patient, plan a daily routine and wait for your doggie to get what you want him to do. Repetition and rewards based training work really well for Chow Chows. If he is food driven, then you should always have his favorite treats handy. You can reward with a treat or a praise even the littlest progress. It helps to take it a step at a time so he doesn’t get overwhelmed. You might want to start training him to focus on you. Teaching him how to look at you (holding a treat up to your face so he’d look at your eyes) is always a good start in focus training. When you say “look at me” and he looks at you even for just a second, you must immediately reward it until he gets the idea. It won’t be long till you’re able to get him to stare at you until you give him a treat. Potty training is tricky and should always be done as early as you can. Taking him out to potty on schedule, day in and day out, especially very young puppies. (We never punish potty accidents indoors, but we make sure to quickly praise every time he goes to potty on the designated potty area) Dogs love to sniff their surroundings before doing their business and they do like to take their sweet time, so patience is really key. (I also say “go potty hurry up” a couple of times, the second I let my dogs out to potty, so they know that that’s what they have to do and I used to reward them with treats when they do, back when they were puppies, now I just praise them with “good boy/s”) You can always try to use potty drops or sprays to put on spots where you want your doggie to go potty or pee. Pee pads can also come in handy, to avoid a big mess indoors should you forget or miss to take him out to potty on schedule. “Come/Come Here” (say the command while holding out your open palm, urging him to touch your palm with his nose, giving him the treat the moment he comes close to touch your palm with his nose), this should also be taught early and treats coupled with a lot of patience and repetition, really work when teaching this command. You might also want to switch your long leash to a regular leash, at least while you’re training him. A long leash would allow him to be far enough to lose focus on you and what you’re asking him to do. I hope this helps and I wish you and your Chow the best! Stay safe and healthy always!

@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 2 года назад
Hi! I’m so happy my dogs and I were able to help you in any way. 😊 Some dogs are ok with fruits and veggies like a few blueberries or peeled (de-seeded) cucumbers, pumpkin/squash or a few slices of bananas occasionally, they are good prebiotics that can help feed the good bacteria in your pet’s gut. However, please AVOID toxic ones like grapes, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts and chocolates. Plain chicken or beef bone broth made especially for dogs (home made, no salt, no seasoning etc. I have yet to learn how to cook it from scratch so I buy for the meantime) would be okay as an occasional treat or to help hydrate them when they’re not feeling well. You can check out www.brothed.ph they make special bone broths for dogs and cats! 😊 Regarding the smell, it really helps to keep them indoors (Chows are actually known for being one of the cleanest dog breeds and thrive better indoors.) Especially young puppies, they need to be protected from microorganisms or bacteria that may be lurking in the mud or in grassy areas (where fleas and ticks hang out). Puppies are still building their immune system and they can be very vulnerable to germs and viruses (like Parvo or distemper) so it’s really best to keep them safe indoors where you can also regulate the temperature. Daily grooming/brushing will also help remove tangled fur and dirt. Less dirt, less smell. Since your puppy is young, you can’t give him frequent baths just yet. You can try wiping him down with a clean towel every time he gets his fur wet from drooling or after playing with water. Hopefully this helps! Stay safe and please hug your Chow pup for me! 😊🐾

@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 2 года назад
@@INotStorm oh no, so sorry your chow is not feeling well. I know it’s hard to book vet appointments lately because of the pandemic but it would be ideal to bring him to the vet to be checked and assessed. Per my experience, a dog or a cat trying to eat leaves or grass (coupled with lose stools or vomiting) is a sign of digestive upset. 😢 I hope he gets to see the vet soon for proper diagnosis and treatment. Adding boiled, mashed pumpkin/squash at least a teaspoon to his food (plain boiled chicken breast) might help for the meantime, but the vet will have to determine the cause of his tummy problems. Praying for your pup! As for your chow and your pug not getting along, introducing the newer puppy gradually and not immediately letting them socialize with each other is recommended. They both need time to adjust to the new situation. Proper obedience training for both pups is always a necessity and will make life easier not just for the pups but for you too! 😊 Being their guardian, they will always look to you for guidance and structure. I hope this helps! 🙏🏻

@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 2 года назад
Hi Lucy! First, congratulations on your new Chow pup! I must admit, Chows can be really stubborn and most dog experts do not recommend them to first time owners, so it’s really best to start training and socializing them as early as possible, like the moment you bring them home. With a lot of research, patience, understanding and love, you can help your chow pup become confident and balanced. I highlighted how I trained my puppies in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WadcV9qF6xY.html Socializing your puppy means letting him experience as many (different) people, dogs, environments, sounds, etc. from 3 weeks of age until before he reaches 12 weeks. But please make sure your puppy’s vaccinations are complete. I used to carry my chow puppy around so he can see and smell things and people and other pets outside, I also gave him a lot of car rides and enrolled him in puppy class (where all puppies are required to be vaccinated) where he got to experience dogs his age and other pet parents too. Try your best to get your pup used to bring around people but make sure they don’t overwhelm him. Try to give him a safe space to retreat to when he gets overwhelmed or tired. It’s also good to anticipate puppy biting and teach him bite inhibition using positive reinforcement. Like when he starts to bite, you can say ouch, stop playing and leave him for a few seconds then come back, praise or give him a treat when he doesn’t bite. (Puppy biting is a phase where they try to explore everything with their mouth and sharp teeth). I am rooting for you and your new chow chow puppy. There’s nothing a lot of love and patience can’t achieve! Stay safe and healthy always! 😊

@@user-et9xl3fr7n hi Lucy. I believe that kindness begets kindness when it comes to pets and if you treat any animal, any breed of dog with love and kindness, patience and understanding what they need, you will only be rewarded with love and loyalty in return. A dog would try to either flee or fight in a situation where he needs to survive or protect himself. No, your chow will not harm you deliberately if you treat him kindly and lovingly (and patiently training him to reach his best potential and providing him the best care in his lifetime). I understand where your fear is coming from but understanding the breed disposition plus respecting your dog’s unique personality and his rights will truly help you live in harmony with him without fear for both you and him. Beautiful dogs you have there. I really want a caucasion shepherd as soon I can afford enough time to look after him ❤️

Thank you so much! My dogs are truly delightful and they give me and my family so much joy. 😊 Having a Caucasian Shepherd can be very challenging, but with a great amount of love, patience, resources and understanding of what to expect from the breed, it can truly be very rewarding. 🐾
