Yeah, just picked this up again because I'm hyped for Wilds, and I refuse to get the defender's armor. Partly because it would make things too easy, but mostly because it looks bad. 😂
So, first of all I would look out for any discounts, I ended up buying just about all the DLC and the base game on a discount and it wasnt all that bad, still under $60 total The base game includes Skiing, downhill bikes/slopestyle. So you can have a few solid careers. Then the BMX is an addon, and skating is an addon. I think there is longboarding now as well. There are also packages that include other "toys" which are like rocket bikes, hoverboards, etc. I have everything except the longboarding and its alot of stuff. Even the full careers of the base game is alot. it kind of depends on what you're after. But it is confusing, alot of DLC, and they do go on sale, so just read the descriptions of each package and choose wisely. But its pretty worth it imo. Ive reconsidered my review and I really enjoy the game, especially on controller
I think thats fair. I understand how it makes things easier, and perhaps too easy, but I still got destroyed, plus armor can only help so much and by the time I hit iceborne... you have to learn 😅
As others have put it, its there for returning vets to skip to Iceborne, its comparatively god mode, i dont think anyone was shaming him so much as lamenting how he was shooting himself in the foot, its not just that it makes the game easier, which, mind, is bad because it allows you to build bad habits unpunished, its that it actively discourages you from interfacing with key mechanics and even the core gameplay loop, you never need to grind for gear, visit the smithy, learn how to build your set, or really learn any of the monsters or weapons in the first place if you use it which makes the game infinitely harder later on when the defender gear falls off and now you suddenly do need that stuff and any bad habits you picked up while nigh invincible are way harder to drop than they wouldve been to avoid gaining in the first place
they put defender gear for players that already know how to play monster hunter(which honestly don't need it) and want to speedrun to iceborne content. it's not meant for new players at all. I mean this whole video was a showcase to all the bad habits he should've left back in low rank. it shows the lack of knowledge he would've needed to even get to the nergigante fight. he didn't even touch the smithy until he got bodied by nergi. there's a reason players keep on critisising capcom for adding the defender gear and guardian armour. clayton here was a good example. heck some players even quit the game altogether once the gear stops being effective cause the face a huge wall they have to overcome.
Loved MH:World, I have 1600 hours in the game. I liked it much more than MH:Rise. Monster Hunter: Wilds is much more similar to world and I'm so excited to play it in 2025.

Something about talking about how the entire monster hunter universe revolves around respect for nature and beasts alike, and then literally starting off the next video with "i fought toaster" is deeply funny to me 😂
Such a shame you missed out on the armor customization. I nearly went with the Defender set too. They really should have made it clear that it was only meant for people who wanted to skip straight to IB
@@VonClaytonGaming I love MH; started with Freedom Unite on PSP. really want to play Iceborne I'm hoping by the time I'm done with Rise I can get Iceborne on the cheap.
Its not so bad, but I did realize that its probably more suited for controller for sure. Ive been learning Rise on controller and it is probably better/more intuitive. Even just picking up the controller and seeing how its laid out helped me understand the game better too
Teostra is such a huge wall for me, I've never beaten him on my own, but I wreck every other monster in the base game. My only struggle with Vaal Hazak was not dealing enough DPS with the glaive & equipment I had when I first tried him. Timed out a couple times. Anjanath and Vaal Hazak are the two monsters that taught me and reminded me to play a little more aggressively
Interesting. Teostra is hard, lunastra is hard, and together they are very very hard. I think it depends on your weapon choice too. But I just had to build alot of fire resistance and use a fire mantle
bit late to the party, but just wanted to say that I fell into the same guardian armor trap, and now I'm able to play some of the games hardest challenges on my own. The training wheels don't ruin the game, even if it teaches you bad habits, and I can guarantee that by experience. long and short of it is that everyone needs help sometimes and that's okay :3
Great comment! I totally agree. Once you get to Iceborne, you have no choice anyway and you gon learn today. There are certain bosses (for me, Barioth) that simply wont allow you to be a noob lol I dont think it ruined my experience, but if I did it again Id probably not use it just to get used to set building earlier. i always love hearing about peoples first experiences with this series. Ive been playing since the release on the Wii and in that time it has become one of my fave series of all time. Your first time playing a monster hunter game and slowly but surely becoming more and more proficient through each of the boss encounters and the constant reward of investing time into your loadouts. The balance of this game is actually phenomenal when you think about it. The game mimics itself in real life even. The skill gap between beginning this game and ending it is immense. And even by the end you will not know a lot about the intricacies of the series as a whole. In the same way the skill gap between new players and old players is also immense. It shows that your journey as a hunter has only just begun.
Wow playing on the Wii must be wild! Thats a great comment. I think thats what ive really come to love about the game, its a bit of a learning curve at first, but eventually it becomes very rewarding and the game is worth investing in, which is kind of what I was looking for in a new RPG! I cant wait to grow with Rise and Wilds as well
game is literally capcoms best selling title so "slept on" seems pretty inaccurate....for example is surpasses Baldurs gate 3, eldin ring and breath of the wild/tears of the kingdom in units sold.
Awesome video! Tis super funny tho how little you knew at the time. Not a single charged greatsword attack by my count... rip. Also, you used a vitality mantle like a ghillie mantle in the final fight, and took it off after you stopped "hiding". absolutely hilarious. Keep on the grind hunter!
