Anthropology asks one big question: what does it mean to be human? To answer this, we cannot rely on common sense or on philosophical arguments. We must study how humans actually live - and the many different ways in which they have lived. This means learning, for example, how people in non-capitalist societies live, how they organise themselves and resolve conflict in the absence of a state, the different ways in which a ‘family’ can be run, and so on.

1:07:05 not sure if anyone can answer this but I’m curious if there is any information as to whether the sex strike started at the new moon, or if the new moon was the height of it and it started in the week or so leading up to the new moon

i love this! Women were assigned to the sun in times of Matriarchy. (And men were assigned to the moon). i think we are multidimensional enough today to understand that both men and women have equal solar and lunar times (we need the same amount of sleep and day light hours). Women have just as much light to shine as men and don’t need to “reflect” patriarchy. Women’s periods revolve around the moon, either starting on the full moon or new moon, and ovulating on the other. Because women are either most fertile or carnally sexual on the extremes of the moon, men bleed on the extremes of the moon by getting into more fights and accidents as a result, during the extremes of the moon, especially full moon. And there is great effort to wipe out the effect the moon has on the earth and on our bodies. Thank you for this !
@matriarchalprayerproject

I agree, after studying some anthropology and theology: People are brainwashed from the time they are babies to worship men and pray to a father taught that a patriarchal book that excludes women is “holy” (holy coming from the word “whole” “holistic”) and they are unopen to the idea of Matriarchy to the point that they can’t believe the earth was longer than 6,000 years old (because before then there was more Matriarchy). Rather than admit matriarchy existed, they would rather believe the world is only 6,000 years old and teach this to others.

Louise Raw's Videos have an average of a couple of hundred views. She's the least popular 'historian' in Britain. so she hangs around Tommy Robinson activity, trying to leach off his success just as she leaches off the cockney women 100 years. she even protested against exposing the police cover-up of hundreds of Muslim rapists in Telford to try and sell a few books. She's the least successful leftist in Britain. What an absolute loser.

I'm a little confused by the slide about the Dogon and Kalasha women. Is it saying that the average Dogon woman spends 15% of her life from age 20-34 undergoing menstrual cycles, 29% of that time pregnant, and the rest of the time breastfeeding?

This 54-minute talk video took me two hours to play, even though I set the speed to 1.25X (so it should only have taken 44 minutes) because I kept going off to listen to some of the music discussed. Two comments I have are: nearly everything said was said twice, or thrice, or even four times, which may be the method the speaker has developed for ensuring he gets his points across, and may be popular with students, but which annoys me, and maybe others; and the constant reference to theoretical ideas, as though to say “See this stuff I’m interested in: IT DOES FIT, HONEST!” rather than just “Look at all this; isn’t it interesting!” and leave all the theory util the end, when it need take up very little time.

Your channel is having problems, no views, no subscribers, no likes, no title SE, O, video in your channel, no video tag, no description, basically SE, O score is 0% out of 100% of all these problems. Because your channel has no views and no subscribers, if you do SEO, people will know about you. The people who grow their business with Google Ad, you can also grow your business from RU-vid and your RU-vid channel will also grow, thanks.

I was privileged to learn from Kua hunter-gatherers in the Kalahari. This was for three years in the late 1970s. I remember once, during an interview, with four men, about tracking skills, that one man suddenly called out to his young son, who’s playing on the other end of the campsite, “Boy! I’m thirsty!” Bring me water!”. This was met with surprise - almost shocked hilarity - by the other men. Meanwhile the boy stopped playing and looked puzzled. He asked his father “are you ill?” and pointed to the water-filled ostrich eggs in a hut not ten feet away form where the men were sitting. One of the other men got to his hands and knees and crawled over to the water-eggs and brought one back, bowing on his knees and simpering in the most humorous way, to the - now embarrassed - father. One of the others scoffed and said to me, as an aside, “he forgets himself and acts like a big chief..”. - great talk - Helga

Fantastic! I shared this on my twitter feed and tagged David Wengrow. Such a sophisticated approach to life developed over 50000 years! Compared to the west which has regressed to the way of chimps but full of the hubris of its technology and things. The global north and the global south (represented by the pygmies) are really two sides of the humnan brain. The knowing humble mind and master should be the pygmies, showing us how best to live as humans together. Instead the emissary the glib talker, the grasping hand of the global north has taken the world off kilter and towards destruction.

A very refreshing video to suddenly find on youtube! But I'm not happy with your illustration from (20:15) of walking and providing meat. First, great apes have never been quadrupeds. So humans, as opposed to other great apes, never started to walk on two legs. And starting to walk on two legs and changing diet to meat is also not the case. It's the tarzanist myth that you looked like you were going to avoid with your dismissal of males inventing the incest taboo. Females would have had their hands free as well; there's no reason for hunting to be a male preserve. Other hunting species don't: cats; dogs; raptors...no. This seems to me a bit of cart-before-horse-ism. It's projecting our own view of the world onto early hominins. In fact, you don't 'invent' hunting unless your established food sources really start to give out. So what story do you think accounts for the inception of the archetypal hunt (a group of men with weapons killing an animal larger than themselves -- not a rodent-sized animal or a bird or a fish)? Concealed ovulation, though, and menstruation, is the name of the game, I agree. An evolutionary question that it's useful to ask is what happened to the individuals whose genes didn't have them take up this preferable strategy, ie, why did they reproduce less so that the new strategy predominated and replaced the old. Or did it spread culturally, ie, once invented? No, because it is the inception of culture. And another is how such a matriarchal group behaviour got overthrown (as asked by a zoom viewer). At (1:24:06), there's a fault on the recording. Chris says Genetically Literate Darwinism "used to be called self//eeng Darwinism", which he says got misinterpreted as Thatcherism. Could you say what the self//eeng Darwinism should be, please?

It was very exciting for me to recall the pink colour of the waters at blick mead (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZdbOixQyWtw.htmlsi=GAqYIDqh7E9Zakeo) and the alignment with the theory outlined in this talk and also the resonance with the experience of dark moon hunting described by Ian watts with the Hadza.

Thank you ever so much for positing this content; the watching of this lecture, led me down a glorious rabbit hole which has given a structure to my own musings on human origins and the impact of the current psychosocial pathologies which afflict humanity (psychological alienation from and commodification/exploitation of the natural world>development of hierarchies based on material accumulation and the oppressive exertion of power leading to deep psycho-social dis-integration of individuals and communities etc)... I'm not sure how I could have missed your group (and the body of work you've produced)... I was on the periphery of the SWP having got involved with the Anti-Nazi League in the early 1990s, studied Social Anthropology at SOAS from 1994-97 and following an extremely circuitous route, studied medicine in the mid 2000s and have specialised in Psychiatry... Im absolutely fascinated by the intellectual rigour applied to concepts which have always felt 'intuitively' correct (matriarchal egalitarianism as the basis of human social organisation/civilisation prior to the Neolithic etc) and have been delighted to discover the work of Lionel Sims (watching his lecture on Silbury Hill), before then discovering that he sadly passed away in 2021. I'm conscious that this is a 'comment' and not an essay, but suffice to say I would very much like to attend the ongoing lecture series and to potentially dovetail my own areas of interest with those of RAG over time.

In particular, I am very interested in the intersection between research findings on the importance of 'altered states' in the origin of the phenomenological experience of the sacred in mythico-ritual contexts (Lewis-Williams, Ruck, Mururescu etc) and the use of such states therapeutically in the management of mental health problems.

and finally... having watched this video on Blick Mead (Mesolithic precursor site to Stonehenge) previously ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZdbOixQyWtw.htmlsi=IMCO_30FjzrKxCT- I recalled the fascinating observation that the waters of the spring were turned 'pink' by a rare natural phenomenon (with further speculation that the mineral paste could have been used for tattooing)... I am sure this observation has been noted and integrated into your work on the use of ochre / red clay etc to signify blood/menstruation etc as per the broader theory expounded in this talk... but I was fascinated to consider the potential resonance of such a site (in which mesolithic hunting of Aurochs is posited as they drank at the waterhole) with the story related by Ian Watts of his experience of 'dark moon' waterhole-ambush hunting with the Hadza.

Communism has been built all over the planet for a long time and all people have been living in communism for a long time. And in communism, for a long time, everyone has the time and resources for any kind of bullshit according to their needs. For any reason, including justifying the existence of socialists. Socialists are perverts. The Socialists have perverted communism to suit their needs and desires. The Socialists, using the benefits of communism, came up with a "clever trick." The Socialists declared communism a "bright future." And the present was called socialism. And it doesn't matter when the "bright future" comes. It is important that the present belongs to the socialists and the socialists are in charge of it and rule everything. Who are the socialists? Socialists are not only perverted. These are parasites who have stuck to communism and suck its resources to themselves, their loved ones and their needs for perversions. And the logical question is - who needs socialists with their socialism and their perversions if communism is around and everyone needs it?
