Hellloooo✨ I’m Gabbie! I’m a full time freelance illustrator and graphic novelist, currently chipping away at my debut graphic novel SERENDIPITY. I live to talk all things art, comics, sketchbooks and life!
As you said, there's no reward or punishment for completing or not completing the challenge and even tho there are «rules», no one is gonna check. So i feel like inktober, peachtober etc is just a fun way to get your creative juices flowing and see how others interpret the same prompts. Its more of a social activity where everyone does the same thing (drawing) but in their own way (their own style, using different media, following a theme throughout all the prompts or doing something completely different every single day etc). We set these expectations for ourselves that we should create a finished illustration for every prompt or we should follow the list exactly and not stray away from it or we should not skip days, especially since we see other people successfully doing so. But its just not realistic, so you can bend the rules or ignore them completely, whatever fits your workflow, lifestyle, art style or even mood. Again, no one is gonna check and creating art should be fun, not stressful (although it often is and that's just a part of it hehe). I completed one 30-day drawing challenge which was not even during October. Me and a couple of friends created our own list of prompts and were free to do whatever. I was drawing, the other friend was writing poetry, the third one was doing whatever she felt like at the time. And it was just a fun activity with friends that i honestly looked forward to doing every day especially since we all used different media. And the prompts were like «my toxic trait», «something that made me smile today», «outfit of the day», «a random memory», «my fav song rn» etc, so it added an extra twist of individuality and reflection. It was really fun and i would totally do it again
I love your illustrations so much! I relate to being nervous about the first page so much 😂 I end up skipping it a lot but I try to do something fun so it’s less pressure 😅 such a nice video!
this was so fun to watch!! totally do a "start a new sketchbook with me" vid😊 string of pearls comment lolll, i too murdered my string of pearls doing everything i was supposed to!! and i have a green thumb with lots of houseplants, and i grow food!! they're just lil shits to keep alive. you could possible cut the green portion off, and lay it in contact with soil so it can root again. i was successful a few times with that, but ultimately they all shriveled up and died😅 at least you have that painting to remember your time together 😩💘 lol. thanks for sharing! much love
Thank you!! I will definitely try that today 🥲 I can keep easy things alive (I have a spider plant and like five very happy Christmas cactus lol) but I got a little confident with the string of pearls I think! Appreciate you watching 💕💕💕
I'm really impressed by your art. You are good at everything! I particularly like your figure and cat sketches, and I love your art style. You're unbelievably underrated. :(
I'm so glad you find it helpful! And yeah, this is a HUGE topic I honestly could have gone on for like an hour lol. Best of luck into going full time, I'm cheering for u!!
Great video as always! Cannot wait to see your Steven Universe fanart! Also, you're so relatable. I feel you on the not-wanting-to-make-art-you're-not-sure-will-turn-out stuff. I've started telling myself that if I really truly hate it, I can rip it up and no one will know it ever existed. But, I rarely do. Haha!
Great video! One of the things that draws me to sketchbook art is the concept of mental crop rotation, where you just give your brain a break from putting out so much of the same thing by putting out something else. I'm like 75% sure I learned it from a mental health tumblr post back in high school. I'm in college now and write novels as my main hobby, so my sketchbook is full of doodles and rough ideas to give my brain something else to do. The ramble was fun, and the video was a good break for me. I hope you get the same in the near future
Yeah DMV over here as well. Aaaand I love watching Steven universe as well. It doesn’t feel like it came out that long ago. If it is, I must be an old codger 😂
omg I was JUST thinking about how much I want to play that Sonic game again to raise chaos! I've been watching some oldschool game letsplays while inking my own graphic novel and playing HM64 a little. And now I seriously want to try that ink you were talking about that won't re-activate. :) Your paintings are so pretty!
Thanks so much Tori!! And the inks were definitely an impulse buy for me, but now I find I reach for them sooo often! The beauty of waterproof ink painting with like none of the mess, I totally recommend!! :)
I agree with most of what you have said. But definitely disagree with "there's always someone making better art". That's not true - art is subjective. And in my opinion, it's not about being "better", but it's all about the process of enjoying it. Enjoying picking out the colours, combining it together in a composition, and then just let it flow. Sure, there might be artist whose works appeal to the public (whatever that is) but you can't deny that there's so many people and with that number so many different perspectives and tastes to art.
I definitely hear your point, and I probably could have phrased what I said a little better 😅 art is definitely subjective, but I say that someone is making better art than me as a way of maintaining perspective. There’s always someone out there making work that’s something I wish I could do, and there’s always room to grow as an artist. Thanks so much for watching and your comment!
Really enjoyable video, so pretty! I'll be interested to see if you can keep your string of pearl plant alive. They are notoriously hard to keep alive!
Thank you! This is a travel sketchbook from handbook journal co, I think I got it at a local art store but I'm pretty sure you can get them online too! <3
Hi, Gabbie! I just want to tell you how much I loved your video and adore your blanket design! The colors are so beautiful. I'm an illustrator and your work is so inspiring! Keep doing what you're doing and take care!!! ❤
I love the bit about shading on a multiply layer and how people tell you not to do it, but you do it anyway. I like to do the same thing and like the effect too. Screw the haters haha!
The paperlike screen protector is good, although it is matte and has a texture so there is friction when you draw/write. I find it nice to use when I am writing with a metal tip on my pen but really annoying with the normal pen tip just because it sometimes makes a funny "creaking" noise... think back to wacom tablets and the pen tips wearing I think that is the best comparison. I think it is definitely worth the try as I think is also comes down to a personal preference! ☺
this is SO cute! and the idea to treat it like you are doing a coloring book is awesome. i am on a long string of unfinished work because i want it to be so perfect that i never actually finish it, so I might have to give this a try!
Dude I have tons of unfinished stuff sitting around too 🥲 I highly recommend giving it a shot! Sometimes just finishing one low stakes thing really helps break through! Finished, not perfect is best 💗💗💗
A pro create for beginners would be awesome!! You would have my undying gratitude. I want an IPad Pro with pro create and the retro brush pack for my birthday in June. However, I would be completely fresh to AI Art. I’ve always drawn and painted IRL. Thank you Gabbie 🤗
I adore your art style. It's soo uniquely yours! ❤❤❤ Like you said, a style is just everything that you love and inspires you! I always enjoy these sketchbook tours so much! ❤❤❤
Ahh thank you so much! And yeah I totally get the want to find a ‘style,’ but I feel like if you spend too much time chasing that you might miss the stuff about your art that makes it you!! 💗
I 100% agree with the stuff you said about Stardew Valley!! I LOVE SV SOO MUCH, It's reallyyy hard to stop playing, especially since the new update! Also, I love your art style. It's so cute and it seems to match your personality perfectly!
Yess dude I'm obsessed again ;-; I tried to avoid as much spoilers as possible and it's been so fun discovering all the new little details. Thanks you so much for watching!
