Nice - one of the first polysynths I got my hands on back in 1984 borrowed from a school friend. Sounds even better with the stereo mod, and fab big clean sounds too.
Awesome- might do this mod, too. On another note: You seem to be a synth enthusiast, how would you describe the Poly61 sound wise and how it holds up against other synths?
I have always heard that the P61 is somewhat of a Lemon, but nothing can be more wrong. Yes, DCO, but the filter is fantastic (same OTA as in later MS20, so IMO better than in a Polysix). I think it gained its bad reputation because some functions has very few steps due to low CPU-power, like Resonance just being 0-7, and ENV->VCF also being 0-7. That makes it a bit crude, but tbh once you start tweaking you don't notice. So a very VERY cheap way to get great GREAT analog sounds. I paid 250 USD for this in a somewhat beaten up condition...
Great, this seems to be the perfect place. A few months ago i acquired an arp odyssey FS (had a voyager in the past, but before i start, honestly i'm not a synth fanatic or collector and if i have to choose one, i prefer the arp stuff). Lately i had anopportunity to get me a ttsh (2600 diy reedition). so at first i was thinking, and i still am wondering, about trading the odyssey for something else, but after that i thought it might be a good idea to keep it and combine it with the ttsh to get more sound creation options, makes sens imo, the sq/st osc's are really close soundwise if not the same, so it could be a fun option, the odyssey being duophonic, with proper cv/gate processor i could probably make one osc per note polyphony (oops i meant paraphony), and still, having 4x the same osc makes sens imo, and there's that sync on the odyssey too.i 'm an independant builder / auidio electronician aswell so i'm thinking, even if the odyssey FS is in surface mounted stuff, i can easyly add some inputs to the odysseys cv and audio mixers without having to much to do... i would'nt be surprise if, when i open the synth, i found extra in or out plots or spots on the some module, who knows? taking separate outs from the osc's might be more complicated and imo not that usefull in combination with a 2600 (and having an external input to the filter in the odyssey), but i'll need to look at that anyway, if the odyssey's osc's end up as a pair with sync, i'm good. one cool thing is the FS has the three different filters from three generations of odysseys, and that's a cool add-on to the 2600 allong with that sync option... i'll add a few external modules i built myself like a wavefolder per osc, lowpassgates and maybe other usefully musical west coast things like that. My spring reverbs i designed (build and sell please check my channel) are way superior to what's inside the ttsh, witch in theory is the same as the original; too noisy imo ... Seems i might need some splitters (doublers) for some cv's maybe? So from what i saw here i thought this might be the right place to talk about this and expect some advice, other suggestion, or point of view, so please feel free to share your thoughts on the topic. thanks for reading me. this vid was very interesting, i'm in... oh, and if our host here is intereted, i have bunch of xtra (test)circuits, boards, schematics, ideas and things to share, i have a ton of things to experiment and not enough time, so i'de be more than happy to send things to someone seriousc whilling to experiment....
Hi, please do post any ideas here! I myself is past experimenting with the 2600/Ody but others might be interested. The most useful "mod" I did and still have installed is the extra sub-oscillator. It actually makes a lot of difference to the Ody.
@@Lackan110f yup, i'm thinbking about that aswell... have you seen the vid marinelli made about his 2600's mods? oh and btw, is your 2600's reverb awfully noisy? i'm not down with modern stuff all using switching power supplys and i'm pretty shure that's the reasoon that reverb is so noisy (white noise)... i want to change that aswell... but yeah, i'll share what i do...
@@baddriddimworkshop Well it IS noisy, but heck, its 45 years old :) It got a lot better when I cleaned the contacts. O lot of oxide and dirt there. But then, I don't really use it that much, so it doesn't bother me.
Great video !!! To my ears the MKS -80 rev 4 is the most analog sounding and cut through the mix with glued parts. Jupiter 8 right after with the xpander and synthex behind them... To hear how fat and glued the horns on the MKS-80 Rev4 sound listen at 3:01 and on. Btw, you could of easily matched and topped the bass sound on the MKS 80 using the unison in dual mode with different amount on each side :) I owned all of them once sxcept gor the sx400 but I had also Jupiter 4 and 6 I enjoyed this pro and fun demo Cheers🎉
i have a ms20 MKI, a MS20 mini and a MS20M - they all sound different. If i copy a patch from yt, i get different result on each of them. I think it also has to do with calibration of the machines. Sometimes some knobs just seem to go till 9 while other model ms 20 go to 11 if you understand what i mean, fully turned up.
I’ve heard from people like Espen Kroft that the kiwi mod “ruins” the sound of the 3p by changing its envelopes, making it more clinical and less characterful. Do you have an opinion? Any chance you could do pinpoint a comparison of a kiwi to a stock jx-3p?
That is nonsens imo, the 3P is DCO from the beginning and everything is digital except filter & vca, which still is analog on a KIWI. So no, the sound only alters in that you have more possibilities to make more advanced sounds that you can't do on a stock 3P. With that said - I have now sold my KIWI, to me it was too complex taking all the fun out of a 3P. Imo you should keep your 3P as is, or buy a Deepmind or Hydrasynth. I personally come to find that all mods tend to ruin old synths, in that the limitations are part of the fun with old instruments.

Since the stereo-sound is routed directly from the voice-board, it will be cancelled when also using the mono-out without FX. But when using the effects on the mono signal (chorus/phase/enesemble) the mono out will add to the stereo sound (which doesn't go through the FX-board). The FX-board is only on the mono signal, warping it enough to make it very phat together with the un-warped stereo signal which comes direct from the voices. (please let me know if I explain badly) :)
I had one of these in the 80s and it was great. You can get some crazy modulation when you drop OSC1 into low mode and use it as a second LFO. Very cool.
I was lucky enough to own both of these synths in the late 80s and paid only a £150 for each of them when nobody wanted them! I don't own them now sadly.
Thanks! The robot voice is a 1980's Texas Instruments Language Tutor, the same used by Kraftwerk on the "Computer World"-album. Check out the songs "Pocket Calculator" and "Computer World", the sounds are the same. :)
Cool vid! I have the DX without the stretch. You definitely have a cool New Order vibe going there. I think the DX sounds better than the DMX! It's just a little punchier, which I prefer.
Very good sounding but at the same time extremely limited. Unfortunately had to pass on a local one as I find it almost non-unusable with its limited architecture. At least not at its current market value.
Yes, quite right, but then you can buy 50 Behringer for one Oberheim OBX that also is very limited, so I don't think you get vintage stuff for the features... :)
@@Lackan110f oh no, the OBX isn't limited at all. The 60f is very cool and awesome sounding but almost feature-less. The minimus to go for is the 110f I think.
The Ob-1 is a fantastic sounding monosynth with that original fat Oberheim sound. Quite rare i believe. If only my Matrix-12 sounded this good in tone. (now sold) I upgraded mine with a 64 editable patch memory expansion board which really improves usability. Soundwise it´s one of the best analogs i´ve tried and on a par with my 1974 Minimoog in analog goodness. Definitely a keeper hopefully.
