We all have different types of (watch) collections, from one watch or three, to a group of all ,models of a single manufacturer's one watch type - or all their watch types, to one of each main watch type by different makers (me), to originals, to copies to one colour, to just one watch type (mixture of makers) - everyone is correct, and no-one is wrong, except for fakes.

You're missing a book: "the art of hornby" which addresses the book of trains and catalogues from the earliest 0 onwards. Not only a good read technically, but is a very good insight into the whys and wherefores, the pluses and minuses and the thoughts behind catalogues layout and imagery. A very good video Barrie: it's nice to have a focus on the background things that add to the enjoyment. And just to add something in regard to your pleasure of the curved turnout geometry, I have in my possession a custom made crossing in standard gauge. Yes, it doesn't have moving parts, but it's just a glorious homebuilt construction. Being standard gauge it is of course 3 rail tinplate, but it's two curves that have been lain across each other, with the centre rail to suit, all spiked directly down onto a wood base. Seeing as standard was a modellers scale before 0 took its place it likely dates from the early to mid thirties when standard was still viable for layouts. Just when you eyeball it down it's length and see those sweeping curved rails 54mm apart, it really gives one an appreciation of that geometry

Hello Barrie, 1 / I hope this missive finds you and the family well, your lovely dogs like to be in your videos ! 2 / Re tender first running. Your comment about model locomotives not liking tender first running is apt. Full size British steam engines also did not seem to like tender first running. The WD Austerity 2-8-0s & 2-10-0s in particular were susceptible to derailments when running tender first. Besides the WDs, was (is?) , are there speed restrictions on steam locomotive tender first running in Britain, as compared to normal, locomotive first running ? (tank engines are the obvious exception here) 3 / With reference to your Fleischmann DRG/DR/DB class BR 52 Kreigslok 2-10-0, the ptototypes were specifically required to run at 80 kph in either direction. Now, bearing in mind that these locomotives had bogie tenders ( as did their predecessors, classes 42, 50, 50UK 2-10-0s ) it may be that this provided the necessary stability, and guidance, to allow the same speed in either direction. 4 / I also presume that British tender steam locomotives were never intended to run at line speed tender first, so were not designed to do so, on the presumption that turning facilities were provided, or where not provided, slower reverse running was required. In Australia, tender first running was not uncommon on branch lines, but these lines were usually restricted to 30-50mph, so perhaps the speed was sufficiently low for tender first running not to be a problem. Most Australian steam locomotives had bogie tenders, but most branch lines were also light lines with low axle loading, in which case a two bogie, 8 axle tender, would have a lower axle load that a 6 fixed wheel tender . Your comments on this matter are intriguing. 5 / This particular video I also found both insightful, and informative. I have watched most of your videos over the last 2 years, during which time I have gained a greater appreciation of Tri-ang, and derivative, locomotives, especially the hidden engineering behind them which you so wonderfully explain. I also find your recommended remedies to be a simple, and elegant, solution to common problems that many of us encounter.. Thank you, best wishes, and regards from Australia.

Hi Baz, thanks for the very informative video. You have reminded me that I have built some Kay’s white Metal Kits and that they came on a Cardboard sheet, that was coloured black, white and orange. The whole lot was covered by a clear plastic sheet. I also remember that I used an old electric Dimmer Switch to control the power supply to the soldering iron. Low temperature was required to solder the parts together. I also built a Wills King and I still have them all today, and I have also had to hard wire them to DCC chips. Regards from Ron,🚂👍😃🚂

A very interesting review of this late GWR class. I like them too. I have a ringfield motored example primarily because I wanted to fill a gap in my GWR ten-wheeler fleet, plus I was unaware that Hornby had used ringfields in some of its loco drive models, until I removed the body to service it. I also have a similarly powered Castle class loco. Whilst ignorance is no defence, I have to say that it runs OK, and the detailing seems identical to your example. As you pointed out, the Hawksworth tender is particularly well appointed. I also attach indicator lamps to the front of mine to add a little more realism. It mostly runs with one, denoting it to be a "local/stopping" passenger service. Being an "ex-Pat" Welshman, I'll be very tempted to buy a model of new build County of Glamorgan if Hornby ever release it.

Hi Barrie, I really do enjoy your videos, but am surprised at your positive review of your Hornby Railroad County Class 4-6-0, as recently whilst promoting the quality of various Fleischmann locos you virtually wrote off Hornby, in your words: ""I'm never going to buy a Hornby loco again as there not fit for purpose"" I would most appreciate your comments. Thank you. Regards Barry W.

Random question on the subject of railroad A1s, if I may? My existing Flying Scotsman is fairly ancient- she dates from 1991, she's tender-driven, and her ringfield motor is ... frail. Once she's in motion she'll still run happily enough, but starting her up tends to be 50/50 whether she'll start or stall. I've been wondering for some time whether to attempt to replace the ringfield with a CD can motor (which I'm reluctant to try since last time I attempted that upgrade with a Hornby A4, I found it far more difficult than the provided instructions suggested to successfully extract the motor bogie without badly warping the plastic tender underframe), or to retire her to a display model and replace her with a modern loco-drive railroad model. However... two problems there. Obviously I know that the "full-fat" Hornby Railways A1 of 2024 is going to be much higher detail than a 1991 era model- but I'm less sure as to whether the railroad one would be. I don't mind if it's an identical level of detail, but I'd prefer it not to be a visual *downgrade* on the older model, if I'm going to be paying 2024 prices for the thing- and secondly, my rather cramped layout perforce has to include a couple of old first radius curves to fit around a chimney breast. The '91 tender drive Scotsman, despite even back then having been supplied in a train set with second radius curve track, can navigate those no problem, having the old pivoting rear pony truck arrangement. As far as I can see, however, the newer railroad version has the 'fixed rear truck with flangeless wheels' arrangement that Hornby nowadays prefer. I know, either version will look rather weird, going round tight radius curves since the cab swings out so far; the only difference being whether it takes the truck and wheels with it or not- a visual problem I solve by simply ... not looking that way when a long locomotive is travelling over that section- but purely on a practical level, does anyone know if there's actually sufficient 'play' in the tender drawbar, on the railroad model, to get around first radius without the swung-out cab pulling the tender off the track? On the old version, the drawbar is attached to the truck, so it's still centralised over the track even when the cab isn't. There's no need to shunt or reverse over the section I'm dealing with, and on such a small length I'm not concerned about the compromise in realism, or whether the tight curve would produce damaging wear and tear over time- I simply want to know - if anyone's aware, of whether the railroad A1 chassis and tender can physically 'make' that grade of curve without pulling itself off the track. Many thanks for any useful answers on that.

Hi Baz, I like the livery on the 90 but I don’t possess any OH electric locomotives. I like your point you make about controlled speed though, I would also like to say that slow running is better achieved by using DCC on all types of models. Also the TPO did indeed run in the red Royal Mail Letters livery, the coaches being repainted in the 1980s and lasting into the 90's before gaining the Travelling Post Office version also seen in the video.
