Sharks fan here. Zadina is a good hockey player. His problem is his high end skills aren’t high enough to be a top 6 player. And he’s not really gritty enough for a bottom 6 role. He got every opportunity in SJ on a very weak team…and it just seems like his ceiling is a 25pt player.

@daltonking6956 Месяц назад
Yet another example for fans of why you don't over value NHL experience in young prospects, he spent next to no time in the AHL and when he did it was in stints, bouncing up and down. Give them consistency and time to build their confidence and learn life skills off the ice before you force them into into the show. If you are a fan, be careful what you wish for when you want to let the kids play, the red wings let him play, and handed him a role every step of the way hoping he would figure it out, and he never elevated his game.

Your very last statement sums it up : "HE never elevated HIS game".
@daltonking6956
@daltonking6956 Месяц назад
@user-js3gs7du3h Yes, and my conclusion isn't that the kid never had it, I saw from time to time, that was the problem. My conclusion is pushing him into a position where he was forced to figure it out at the NHL level clearly didn't work, when I see guys like Raymond, Bertuzzi, Berggren, and the more recent picks be given more time to build up to the NHL and I works out better for them. Zadina didn't have any competition to make him fight for a spot, and that is where the organization failed him in his development, it allowed him to feel as if his skills were good enough to not push him to the next level, or didn't allow him the time to work on his game the way he needed to. That being said, he was given a spot and he absolutely did not make the most of it, and he has some responsibility for that. But I feel the narrative is very focused on that around him and misses the bigger picture when we compare him to other prospects we often complain are getting "over-ripened."
@user-js3gs7du3h
@user-js3gs7du3h Месяц назад
@@daltonking6956 Raymond played one season in Sweden after draft and then hit the NHL running. Zadina played 59 games in the AHL the year after draft and 28 games in the AHL the season after that before becoming an NHL regular. I hope you're not suggesting that because he didn't play in minors for 3 years that now he can never learn to keep up and succeed at the NHL level. Zadina has NHL 262 games under his belt. Maybe he will be a late bloomer.
@daltonking6956
@daltonking6956 Месяц назад
@user-js3gs7du3h I am saying the inconsistency, and lack of competition for a spot, clearly did not benefit his development. Say what you want about Raymond only spending only a year in the SHL, he spent the whole year there and had to tear down the door to the NHL when he got here.

@daltonking6956
@daltonking6956 Месяц назад
@seanorr2003 I don't think they messed up the draft so much as the development of the player. Blah blah blah Hughes, I am so tired of the same conversation for like a decade now, like they took Zadina get tf over it, why does nobody talk about how they could have done a better job developing the player they did get. Maybe the story is what a better position Hughes was put in to succeed for him personally. I don't think, compared to how the red wings have handled their more recent prospects, Zadina was ever put in a good position to succeed, and he never properly developed his game.
@TheLarknessMonster
@TheLarknessMonster Месяц назад
@@daltonking6956 Red Wings rarely mess up the development of a player. It's more likely they just picked a bust. Zadina plays the same way in SJ as he did in DET. If players have a rough development stint with a team you usually see them bounce back after being traded.
@daltonking6956
@daltonking6956 Месяц назад
@TheLarknessMonster You're not wrong, but Zadina came in at the worst possible time. The team was loaded down with overpaid veteran contracts, and no other prospects with any top6 potential to score goals like he could. Remember this was the tail end of the Holland Era, and he had the team in a place where he couldn't bring in veteran talent anymore because of the cap, and he needed to fill his lineup. So, ready or not, that meant a lot of prospects had to fill rolss, and yes most all of them weren't good. But in Zadina's case, I think if he entered the team now and they could have afforded to let him work on his game a bit longer in the AHL, that would have made a big difference for a player like him. He was robbed untold amount of crucial minutes playing bottom 6 in the NHL night after night, instead of top 6 in the AHL, SHL, where ever else that could have been to build the player up instead of throwing him into the deep end and hoping he swims.
@TheLarknessMonster
@TheLarknessMonster Месяц назад
@@daltonking6956 Sure, but if players need significant years to develop in the AHL they probably aren't top 6 material. Rasmussen was put in a similar role and excelled in his big bodied niche very well. You can tell it was all Zadina's fault he sucked and not Detroit's by comparing his development to Rasmussens or Seiders. Rasmussen was the year before Zadina and Seider was year after. Both players are still on the team filling their roles very well, Seiders basically a top 10 D man in the league already. Zadina looked clueless most nights trying to just score goals like it was a youths hockey game rather than realize he was in the big leagues now and needs to round his game as he goes. He looked like he was trying to be a Stamkos or Ovechkin day 1 when he was only ever going to be similar to Nyquist, maybe a bit better at his ceiling.

The team defense problem isn't solely on the players. The coach's system isn't a defensive system. It's a run and gun offensive system. It the coach doesn't change his team's system of play then he has to be replaced by a more defense first coach who coaches a system that shuts down opposing O zone entries and forces turnovers.

I never thought he was that good and he really just wasn't. Back to Czechia and see if there a job open with Jaromir Jager's team. Maybe old Jaromir can fix what's wrong with Filipo's game before he too old try again in the NHL. He comes from a fairly wealthy family so he won't go hungry even after leaving all that Red Wing money on the table.

I think the wings have a much better team after all the moves. Btw Walman was thrown into the Nick Leddy trade to the blues as the least valuable piece. Wings also got a 2nd rd pick and Sunquist. Nobody knew Walman was any good at the time except for Yzerman who said he has watched him for years and really liked Walman his draft year, but the blues got him first.
@andrewborody
@andrewborody Месяц назад
Their D could use another piece on the right side, but they'd have to move out Holl or Petry. To do that, you'd have to package a prospect or a mid-round pick and I'm not sure it's worth it right now. We're deeper at both Forward and Goalie. Defense is a question mark, whether they improved or not, but if Edvinsson is as good as projected and Johansson is an upgrade from Petry, then we could be a playoff team.

@@HaskeyHighlights I think Talbot will be the starter, as large workloads seem to catch up with Lyon. Yzerman said he didn't want to run three goalies this season and we once again have a log jam. @@HaskeyHighlights For sure! I like Husso too, but he's injury prone and hasn't found consistency since his first season in Detroit. I think Cossa makes his way into a few games this season and if all goes well, maybe takes on a backup or split role with Talbot in 2025-26. Augustine is potentially an even better goalie than Cossa. I can't see both of them being flops. Fingers crossed.
