I'm not the sort of person to make sweeping statements about myself.
However, I'm here to play and I'll be bringing with me rando build projects and some pseudo science.

I'm super impressed with your problem-solving, specifically the process of finding the angle that your fork needed to be mounted so that the handlebars wouldn't take up too much room. I'm building my own bike rack for the back of my pickup and used your design as inspiration. I'm still trying to figure out how you cut that angle with a miter saw.

Sorry for the late reply, I have a compound mitre saw. I can simultaneously set mitre and bevel. How did your project go? I'm keen to see photos if you have any!

Great video! How did you secure the drawer / slide to the floor of the van?
@cerealspilla
@cerealspilla Год назад
Thanks for the question! My van already had a ply floor in it (large flange rivets secure the ply to the body work). I added more rivets to the ply to ensure the ply was very secure. Then I used slotted angle internally for the length of the drawer. I screwed into the carcass sides and straight down to the ply floor. I took some care to make sure the carcass was square so the draw would slide properly and both locking mechanisms operated correctly once it was all screwed down. I wanted to be able to remove it easily, but never have 😜

That would be the dream. King swears he'll never paddle again, I'm confident I can twist his arm. I've got a 3-4 nighter planned on flat water, but I haven't done much about organising it. I have a white water kayak now, planning to brush up on some skills over summer.

What did you do with the front wheel's while in back of van?
@cerealspilla
@cerealspilla Год назад
It changes every trip. Often they just tuck down the left side and that's fine. When we have been super loaded I packed them concentrically axle to axle with a pull noodle cut and taped in a 300 mm circle to so they held the rotors and hubs off one another but the noodle transferred load through the spokes in stead.

Great drawer build and video. Where did you buy the carpet/is it boat type? Thankyou.
@cerealspilla
@cerealspilla 2 года назад
Yeah, it's marine carpet, I just bought it from Bunnings in Australia. If you're overseas it is a fuel resistant water resistant carpet. It probably wouldn't matter inside the van, but I just wanted it to be durable in case I spilled chain lube on it.

Have you considered a thru axle system similar to the Old Man Mountain fit kit for their Divide racks?
@cerealspilla
@cerealspilla 2 года назад
You know what, I hadn't. I had seen them but never thought about trying to deploy one myself. The challenge is a secondary mounting point. Most racks rely on stabilisation high on the seat stay. Perhaps I could modify the fasteners on a top linkage pivot. Time for a lathe? 🤣😄
@willmcc16

Thule make a rack, they call it pack n pedal. Topeak do one called Tetrarack M2. Aeroe Spider rear rack only works with dry bags.
@cerealspilla
@cerealspilla 2 года назад
Spot on! I didn't like the support width of the legs of the tetra rack, seemed like it would point load the carbon a bit too much. I'll look up the others. I had no idea Thule made one. The Aeroe spider looked nice when I saw it advertised on Instagram.

Love the tool / storage drawer underneath, I'm definitely stealing this idea for my van build.
@cerealspilla
@cerealspilla 2 года назад
Here's a couple of things I got lucky with, it's JUST tall enough my tool box fits, and the compartments are JUST long enough my pump fits. I didn't bother measuring the height of the toolbox because I just made the drawer as tall as I reasonably could (I still wanted to have wiggle room to carry taller bikes if needed - but a tie down strap would easily compress a fork for transit too).

Andy, I haven't yet. I've been editing an upcoming video from an overnight canoe camping adventure. It's been a lot of work. To your point solving angled legs in a fixed way is easy, solving them in an adjustable way.... well I came up with something great! I'll atleast get a photo up for you.

You might be headed to trouble mounting on the swing arm. It should attach to the main triangle of the bike to take the constant stress away.
@cerealspilla
@cerealspilla 3 года назад
Andrew, tanks for the comment. It's an interesting thought. Two questions: where would you mount it and brace it from the main triangle? And second if I used this same design on a hard tail, how much more or less stress do you think the seat stay would see? I haven't don't any maths on it, I'm the wrong kind of engineer hahaha

What size fire extinguisher is that? If you'll do it again, do you think a slightly larger one will do an even better job? Cheers mate!
@cerealspilla
@cerealspilla 4 года назад
Thanks for the question! Both were 1 kg. A larger one definitely has more capacity which is a good thing, but it takes longer to pump up. High pressure is more important than high capacity. 2 kg would probably work a bit better but is gonna take twice as long to pump up. It’s a bit of a trade off. I wouldn’t want less than 1 kg and I think I wouldn’t want more than 2 kg. The higher pressure extinguisher definitely works better. Of course higher pressures and larger volumes are both more dangerous. I might try a larger one and report back!
