“She took my childhood in her stride” This is quite contentious. While I appreciate the performer has switched “he” to “she” to reflect his own gender identity, the original lyrics “he took my childhood in his stride” is one of the most powerful lines in the verse implying Fantine was raped at a young age which is fundamental to her character arc. Normally when lyrics are changed to fit gender identity the purpose is to make the song personal to the performer meaning the performer directly identifies with the character and is expressing or reflecting similar experience in life. If that is the case I’m very sorry for you but if not, reverting to the original lyrics puts the frame of reference back to Fantine and doesn’t undermine her experience. A somewhat subjective view. I’m sure many would disagree. Ultimately the artists choice but it is an interesting dynamic to ponder.
