Preserving a Generation of Broadcast Media from the basement of my home in Nova Scotia, Canada.
It is my belief that taped media from the 80's and 90's is a cultural mural representing the final generations of the 20th century. Media consumption, consumerism, lifestyle, and the role of the technology boom that saw home computing and the internet enter daily life. This incredible and unique time period is unlike anything we'll ever see again. It is no less important to preserve this era in media than it is to save the hieroglyphs on the walls of Giza's tombs...
All material seen here has been gently and carefully recorded from old physical media by myself.
Reach out to me if you have tapes, records, or other forms of media to donate to this project.
I also have a running GoFundMe linked here where people can donate financially to help with costs associated. Every cent donated goes back into this project for equipment, travel, etc.

The upbeat music in the ad sounds like it was probably inspired by the opening of "Changes" by Yes.

Betamax, I was just looking at another commercial Gary (Sturdy Dan McGee) was in. Labbatts Beer 1985. He was atop another pine tree in Squamish BC where he still lives. Took the top of that tree as well.

I'm on my 4th Jeep vehicle. I had a 2003 Liberty (great car, went through 3 owners including myself, my Dad, and my brother), a 2006 Liberty (again, great vehicle and still my favorite - I wish I had kept it), 2014 Compass (terrible vehicle, poor capability, and the transmission died at 62,000 miles!), and currently a 2020 Jeep Renegade (so far, so good, except for a mice in the ceiling problem last year).

I used to love these 7UP commercials with Geoffrey Holder! I loved his laugh. Those commercials were so much better than the later "Spot" mascot. "Crisp and clean with no caffeine!" I also remember my brother's friend doing that impersonation while drinking a bottle of 7UP. 😊

Ah, that cheesy police whistle sound effect at the beginning of the commercial - I feel like that must have come standard with every synthesizer from the late 70s through the 80s. I heard it used in so many songs during that timeframe!

I always find that kind of thing funny. I was watching something the other day where a person went out the door and the door squeaked in the same way I've heard a thousand other doors squeak. It's a recycled sound effect.

@@BetamaxKing my brother used to work in video production, and there was a while library of prerecorded sound effects they had available to use. I remember there was this one of children laughing, and my brother said he heard that one used all the time.

Never had this one, but I’ll never forget my family getting our first camcorder, a Sony Handycam, in the spring of 1987. My grandpa surprised my dad and gave it to him so he could take videos of our family. I was only 7 at the time, soon to be 8. From then until I finished high school we had two Sony Handycams, and I frequently shot things on both growing up. So much so that I ended up going to college for film and video production. But my family always had an affinity for Sony products in the 80’s and 90’s. Wonderful stuff. Wish they made some consumer level players and a few other things with as high of quality today.

I used to always buy Sony boom boxes. They were the best quality and always worked so well. Unfortunately the brand really started to go downhill, especially in the 2000s. I went through 3 Sony boom boxes in the 2010s, and all ended up with the same problem - they would eventually stop playing CD-Rs (despite being "CD-R compatible"). I eventually gave up and just play my CDs through the DVD player now, which is hooked up to the stereo. But yeah, I was faithful to Sony for a long time. It's sad that the company that pretty much invented the CD player makes such poor quality products for playing them on now.

I have searched on and off for this commercial for literally decades and i had a feeling you would have it. And I was right. You are a saint. Thank you!!!! I have searched for so long. Hours and hours. Googled for "Golden Light." Found nothing. And now? I'm about to feast my eyes and ears. I always loved the music ... "shine your light on me, shine your light on me..." there's a slight key/melody change that makes the song work so well. I've babbled enough. Thank you!!

@BetamaxKing 2 дня назад
Unfortunately it's unvaulted in an unofficial capacity. I did ask when I did the CBC interview if Switchback still existed and I was told it does but that it will probably never see the light of day because of licensing. Still, the feeling I got was that most people would be happy to throw open the vault doors and just turn the other way. Nobody seems to believe that this stuff should be locked up and hidden away but that there's just not much they can do about it without spending a lot of money.
