I was 7 when I watched this. Until that film, I had only ever cried when an animal died in a film - this was the first moment I felt true compassion and tears for a human being and it's impact stayed with me forever. Over the years I have Googled the film in the hope of finding it and now finally, here it is. Thank you so much for posting this amazing film so I can re-watch it and so that others can see it too

Apartheid-era South African films fascinate me. I wish they had English subtitles.
@TrevorMoses312

Many of those films made prior to 1994 were only shown here as they couldn't be screened overseas and most South Africans are bilingual anyway.

@@TrevorMoses312 Still a pity, though. It's a lost cinema, probably ripe for rediscovery. Too bad more people can't have access to it.

I worked for more than three decades as a South African film archivist: almost all of the South African features from 1916 onwards have been preserved and digitized. Nothing has been lost except some of the early silent films.

@@TrevorMoses312 That's great to know.. I'm sure that if they were subtitled that they would reach a wide audience, I'd certainly watch them.

*Ek is regtig nie heeltemal seker hoe ek oor hierdie rassistiese apartheidsmanipulasie voel nie.

Quite a good production and a worthy retelling of the battle. Unfortunately I only understood a few Africaans words.

A fantastic film. I lived in South Africa when it was released in 1968. I went to an English speaking primary school and learned Afrikaans, but it wasnt good enough to understand the Afrikaans section of the film. So I didn't see it then. However, today back in the UK and on the 143rd anniversary of the battle, I watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though I didn't understand the Afrikaans, I was able to work out the gist of it. It would have been nice to have sub-titles though!

The films original running time was 165 minutes, the film was edited down to 99 minutes to fit more screenings into a day and the excised footage was never put back nor archived 😔

Please Chris van der Leer I don't know the Afrikaans language but I know English, Spanish or Portuguese, but if you put subtitles you will allow many people in the world to know more about the history of this heroic African people, I already ate biltong in Europe and I loved it. we have something similar in Brazil that we popularly call (dried meat or beef jerky)
