The canon r3 has problems with some autofocus cameras, which canon does not officially recognize. This is an analogue of the back and front focus, only the symptoms are slightly different. And so far the problem has not been solved. Moreover, the r3 autofocus has other serious problems with not very contrasting objects.

I don't get it, I set the interval, like 10 shots every seconds, to try, I see the timer on the screen, I move a big my camera each second, but at the end I have only one photo, the first one. What is wrong? (And thank you, great explanation).

Found the solution, put it here if it can help: the Interval Timer wasn't working because I have Back Button Focus enabled and focus removed from the shutter button.

Josh, I came across your channel when looking for some info on the r3 which I'm upgrading to from the R6mkII (good 2nd hand deals on the R3 at the moment). Really enjoying your videos, and this one was great for myself as I've never looked into video yet but will now I'm getting the R3. One thing I would like to know is what lens do you recommend for video, prime or zoom. I've got Sigma Art 14mm f1.8, Canon RF16, 24, 50 & 85 primes all f1.8 along with Samyang 85mm f1.4, and then for zooms have Sigma Art 14mm to 24mm f2.8, Canon 11mm to 24mm f4 (looking at moving this on), 28mm to 70mm f2, 24mm to 105mm f4, 100mm to 500mm f4.5 to 7.1, etc.
@joshrexford
@joshrexford 12 дней назад
So glad you found the channel, welcome! Lens choice for video is a very personal preference - for run-and-gun stuff I usually prefer zooms but if there's a specific shot or shot style you're looking for (or you're in super low-light conditions), a fast prime can be super helpful there!

I've been on Sony since 2020 and it's they're the first pro cameras I got. Managed through point and shoot Panasonic Lumix FZ35 since 2009 because I haven't been forced to be the cameraman nor the producer. Have the A7SIII and A7Rv and planning to add more. Other brands aren't as good with all due respect and gear does matter a lot if you're a wildlife filmmaker.

Any suggestions for managing B/O & M/G white balance at events with varied lighting environments? How do you deal with manual white balance in video mode? Using the Kelvin adjustment only manages the blue / orange shift but does nothing for the green magenta. Yes, I can info in to M/G but the whole process is tedious and not practical for events with multiple lighting situations.

Awesome. I copied this for my R6ii. The single spot, one-shot thing in the back saved me a button customization. I can now use my video record button for autofocus spot change with the dial and keep the multifunction for multifunction. Love it. Thanks! PS... Dude, that last tip about the Q menu and using info button at the spot focus menu to turn on and off tracking per the spot. Huge! I was wondering why the hell sometimes tracking stopped and sometimes it didn't. Game changer. Also, I might be picking up an R3 if I can swing it for my main camera. Hence the reason why I watched this video. Glad I did because the R6ii is very similar.

That's good you found what inspires you. I have to disagree with a lot you said at least from the creative perspective. The last thing I'm doing and other people can chime in, is buying new gear during a creative slump, or switching brands ... that sounds so unreasonable. Not to mention very expensive. You are a working professional/content creator, 99% of the people watching this video are not. Modern cameras today from the big 3 are so close in specs and capabilities, I would be hard pressed to find more than a handful of people that can exceed those capabilities. I'm not saying you can't or that you're wrong in any aspect of your video. I'm just pointing out that this isn't normal behavior for amateur or even a majority of working photographers. Content creators on the other hand...well it's the nature of the business. You gotta make fresh content. With respect to that - Whenever you ever find yourself on your next creative slump you should take a break. Draw some inspiration from your peers and reset. Maybe it's just not challenging enough for you. Maybe go back to your roots for some inspiration. That D4 you use to own pairs very well with all those wonderful AI-S manual focus lenses. Perhaps you should even go further, a roll of 24 film and no autofocus can get your creative juices flowing real fast. It's a very humbling experience getting one or 2 keepers out of a roll 😬 - A vast majority of the time it's not the gear, it's you.
@joshrexford
@joshrexford 15 дней назад
Absolutely agree with all of this and thanks much for your thoughtful response! Definitely wasn’t trying to argue that, in seasons of creative plateau, the only thing you need is to buy new equipment - that’s absolutely way too expensive 😅 I would absolutely advocate, as you have, in taking a step back personally, shooting some film, shooting some different subject matter than you typically do, etc - all things that can help spark the creative process anew and that’s been the case so many times for me over the past 10-15 years. However, there have been a few seasons throughout those years where the gear I’ve been using wasn’t able to perform how I needed, forcing a systems change, and in those moments the gear itself has been the catalyst for renewed inspiration. Really appreciate your thoughtful comment and thanks for watching!

My journey has had similar seasons, but for different reasons. I started in 2017/2018 by buying an older a-mount sony body. I liked that I could get into the whole thing for reasonably cheaply (I didn't have a lot of disposable income at the time but I really wanted to try photography), seeing as the Minolta lenses were cheap and many are of great quality. So I kitted myself out with an a65 with its apsc sensor and then started shooting everything. Eventually the sensor and capabilities of the a65 felt limiting, at least for several of the styles I wanted to do. So I first tried upgrading to the a99. Its a great camera to this day, but mine had a fault that I needed to return it over (It was used) and I had a trip I needed a camera for. I stumbled across a facebook market place post for a high end minolta lens and an LA-ea4 adapter included. It was perfect timing and cheap enough that I grabbed it and talked with the used camera rep to add some cash to my returned purchase and get an a7rii. At this point I'm using all my minolta gear with the adapter for the e-mount. However it just didn't work well enough. The glass was good, but the interface sucked. So I started grabbing some high end (and not so high end) e-mount stuff. Eventually I got my sigma 24-70 which is a brilliant bit of kit. I grabbed a viltrox 85 f1.8, and so on. I filmed some youtube videos at the time so eventually the lack of eye autofocus started getting to me so I grabbed the a7iv. It was night and day. I've always been an advocate of only upgrading gear when you start to get hindered in what you can create by your gear. I've tried to stick to that right along.

@@joshrexfordwhat exactly made you switch?
@joshrexford
@joshrexford 15 дней назад
In 2017 the shift to Canon was primarily autofocus - the Nikons I was using had horrible autofocus in video and Canon’s Dual Pixel AF was fantastic. Stayed on canon till last year when I needed some of the built-in video features Sony had but canon didn’t (outside the R5c and C70 but I made a whole video on why I went FX3 vs those cameras) and so that prompted the shift to Sony (even though I stayed with canon for photo for about a year).

I've been shooting Canon for my all career, and not gonna lie, I haven't had any issues. BUT! I really feel like im missing out by not switching to Sony. There are pros and cons, but my main thing is the image quality, specially with clog 2 and 3. Which one do you prefer? the image from the canon system or the Sony? 😅😅😅
@joshrexford
@joshrexford 15 дней назад
So I’ve only been able to use clog3 and I MUCH prefer slog3 to clog3. However, I know clog2 is really beautiful and canon FINALLY adding that to the R52 and R1 is really encouraging. But yeah overall, much happier with the Sony video image and that + some of the native in-camera video features are what helped tip me over the edge. That said, canon is starting to push more video-centric features and options (R62 and R52 are great examples) and canon definitely is still a viable and very capable option!

The one I have is from PocketDispo and it's been solid - it is a solid f/11 aperture so definitely works best in good light and the vibe is for sure less crisp/sharp/etc than a mirrorless lens would be, but if you're using it to specifically get that "disposable camera" feel, that's kinda expected.
