Join us as we roam and explore some interesting Aussie locations.
We particularly enjoy checking out quirky spots that we find off the beaten track. We're not full-time travellers, but love to hook up our Jayco Hawk Outback Camper whenever we can. In between our road trips, we like to check out interesting locations closer to home and do some bush walking. Both of us are enthusiastic amateur photographers and we're enjoying skilling up in the video arena. Joe likes to get the drone up when and where he can. We’ll even share some of our favourite camp meals, tips, hacks and mods that make our time on the road more enjoyable.
In 2024 our videos will go live every second Friday at 6pm AEST.

Great video guys. I am picking up a 2003 Dove Outback soon to fit my wife and 3 young children. Looking forward to having experiences like you guys. Keep it up
Hi Alastair, thanks so much for watching and for your feedback, very much appreciated. We are sure you and your family will absolutely love your Dove OB, and we are hope you'll make some amazing family memories in fantastic locations. These little campers are just the best! Feel free to ask any questions along the way, we are always happy to answer them if we can. We do have a Playlist titled 'Jayco Camper Trailer - Tips & Hacks, Reviews and Maintenance', so you may find some helpful info in these videos too. Cheers, Lea and Joe
Interesting, thanks for taking the time to put it together. A permit is not needed, guidelines here: www.queenslandrail.com.au/about%20us/Documents/Rail%20Enthusiast%20and%20Amateur%20Photography%20and%20Filming%20guidelines.pdf Always worth carrying information like that since often the staff at these places have no clue about what is and is not permitted.
Thanks for watching Katrina and Cain. We love all that history. Stay by the creek if you can. We couldn’t as it was still a,little boggy following rain. Cheers Lea and Joe
Thanks so much for sharing that Chris. I’m sure the town has changed quite a lot since the 1960s. It’s a lovely area. Thank you for watching. Kind regards, Lea and Joe.
@@RoaminWithTheRubes yes a lovely area, they sold blocks of land for $1 back in the nineties I think it was. Our shop was opposite the exchange hotel I’m pretty sure, in high st. Next door to the hotel was a tractor dealership, they were red, I’m thinking Massey Ferguson, anyway I went across the road this day and climbed up the big ladder that allowed access to the cabin of one of the bigger tractors they had, I was going great and got into the cabin but stuffed up and pushed the starter somehow. I just started screaming above the roar of the engine and was quickly saved from the big red beast, lol. Just a memory I have as a 4 or 5 yo I thought I would share. Happy safe travels to you both.🙂🇦🇺
Your story gave us a little laugh Chris, but we do understand that you weren't laughing at the time! For a child of your age then it would have been very frightening. Such a temptation that tractor must have been for you, but we bet you thought twice before doing that again. Thanks so much for sharing this great story Chris.
Awesome set of videos. Thanks for the tips. Just curious, when lubricating the lifting arms, you went out of your way to keep the silicone off the canvas. But when lubricating the zippers, you weren't worried about getting some on the canvas. What is your overall conclusion of getting the silicone on the canvas?
Hi Jim, glad you enjoyed the video. Good spotting on the silicon spray, I'm on the fence wether it affects the canvas outside, my only concern was the waterproofing so I just played it safe with the ply shield. It really doesn't stain the canvass inside. Next time I do a canvas clean and I'll see what the spray does to the waterproofing before I start. My guess is it'll be ok. Safe travels and best wishes, Joe and Lea
Great tips and hacks! Just bought a Jayco Hawk (upgraded from the swags) Can’t wait to hit the road when the weather gets warmer! Will certainly be doing a few of these hacks. Thank you!
We're really pleased that you enjoyed the video Rob, it's great that you got a Hawk. We love ours, it certainly made our camping more enjoyable. Hope the hacks work well for you. Regards, Joe and Lea.
Hi Daniel, it's aftermarket and I installed it myself. I have a 160W Adventure Kings solar panel and Kickass MPPT controller onto a 120AH AGM battery , as we're mainly charging devices and running lights we don't need much more. Something like this is a good low cost solution: www.4wdsupacentre.com.au/160w-fixed-panel-mppt-12m-lead-kit.html I used the glue on mounts like this (get the black ones they last a lot longer) to hold them onto the roof: www.ebay.com.au/itm/385744907319?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=FErOd1P3Tri&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=Ymg5UDFjTKa&var=653527082240&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY and used Sikaflex 252 to glue them on. I hope that helps, Joe and Lea
Glad it helped Wes, mine were like that the first time I opened up the access cover. Luckily it's an easy fix. Hope you have a great holiday, Joe and Lea.
Absolutely appreciate your investigations and revelations of the old railway. As a former resident of Samsonvale I sincerely appreciate the insights. Thank you!
Hi Joe and Lea, just up from the Samford station the old railway line run adjacent to Station Street. My Mother and Father In-law lived (now my Sister In-law lives there), directly next to the line and there was a rail bridge across the creek. This is now a continuation of Station Street into the new estate. You can still some of the railway cuttings which go past what was the CSIRO. Thanks for sharing your wonderful information. TrickyTrev 👍🐝🍯
Hi Trevor, thanks for watching and thanks so much for all of that information. Lea and I are really happy that you enjoyed the video. We have been overwhelmed by the interest in this branch line. Looks like we'll have to go roamin' there again in the not too distant future. Best wishes, Joe and Lea
Thanks for sharing. I did an exploration about 10 years ago. There are a few bridge remains left, albeit not much. Timber posts at Terrors Creek, as well as in a farm paddock visible and east of Dayboro (at Briscoe Rd) (you can also see the embankment). Cut off posts in North Pine River, station platform as per Closeburn at Samsonvale still remains (hidden in the grass), cut off posts in South Pine River near Warwick Lane and more cut off posts in Dry Creek - which is visible along the McClean Rd bikeway. The original telegraph line poles are still in place along McClean Road and Lanita Road (some, not all). These carry comms lines and are distinctively shorter than modern power line poles and have metal domed tops. Finally, the line alignment between Lanita Rd and McClean Rd is now a bikeway through the bush. Some the drainage culverts are original. If you didn't know what you were looking for, you'd never know.
Thanks Brad for all of that information. We would never have imagined the rabbit hole we were entering on the subject of this branch line, it's absolutely fascinating and thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. We're going to have a look based on your notes and see what we can find. Best wishes, Joe and Lea.
OK so now I want Toasties.... I can't believe you call them Jaffles... How un-Queenslander of you... They are toasties... Now to the fridge to see what i can put together... Love the channel by the way.
LOL, we love your feedback on the ‘toasties’. When we were kids…way back when they were called jaffles. Hope you found some tasty ingredients. The important question from us though is square or round? I have fond memories of my mum making round ones, and I still reckon they taste better - all in the head I think. Thanks heaps for watching and also for enjoying our channel. Cheers, Lea (and Joe) 😃
I like how you promote use of axle stands. I am impressed the scissor jack has survived more than one use. I think a hydraulic floor jack is the way to go or the caravan specific bottle jack.
Thanks for the great feedback, the camper's scissor jack is ok. It has the height to do the lift, I am hoping to find a hydraulic solution though. Always have jack stands, just makes sense. Thanks for watching and your comment. Best wishes, Joe and Lea.
Thanks for watching James, glad you liked the video and are going to give it a go. We have part 2 coming out Friday week which covers the rest of the service. Safe travels Joe and Lea.
Thanks for showing the wheel bearing maintenance. I've never done them before and considered it a bit intimidating. Your directions were clear and informative. Great vid!
Cool video. Easy to understand and very well explained. Love your commitment to looking after your camper. I dare say it would not get this much love from a dealer or mechanic.
Thanks so much for the wonderful feedback. We love this little camper and want it to be around for a good while yet so it's worth the effort. Thanks for watching and safe travels, Joe and Lea.
G'day Rubes, I just watched your video on the Abandoned Dayboro branch line, just wanted to know if you would be interested to do a video on the Abandoned Caboolture to Killcoy line 😊?
Hi Mark, Joe has done a little research on this line and thinks it could be quite interesting. So yes, we are keen and do have it in mind. Hopefully we can find some time in the not too distant future. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers, Lea.
Many thanks for the excellent video. There are a few concrete remnants of the railway line at the Kobble Creek picnic area, that you may like to check out. This spot appears on Google maps as 'Kobble Creek Lake Samsonvale' and is slightly under 1km north of Gold Scrub Lane. We have been bird-watching at this spot for a few years, and have always wondered what these things were. Now we know. Cheers, Michael.
Hi Michael, we sincerely apologise that we did not reply until now. Thank you for this super helpful information, it is very much appreciated. We will be going to check this out in the next couple of weeks. Cheers, Lea and Joe.
I don't understand why a permit is needed simply to film parts of a Queensland Government owned railway station. This is a public facility and there should be no censorship involved. Anyway, you could have filmed it from the road or across the line.
Thanks for watching and giving us a comment. Yes all we really wanted was a shot of the entrance, the staff member was very pleasant and explained that it was policy not to permit recording without a permit. It wasn't a biggie for us so we moved on and used a still. we know better for next time.
@@RoaminWithTheRubes yes i just dug out my old one called a rome is big and square .Will be picking my swan latter next week getting excited about getting out and about for some adventures good chance we might bump into you guys out there cheers.
Not much longer to wait before picking up your Swan, it will be very exciting to commence some adventures. We trust all goes well. I remember how excited we were when we picked up a Hazel Hawk. Our daughter and son in law also have an older OB Hawk. We hope to get out in a couple of weeks, fingers crossed the weather will be kind. I’m sure we’ll be having more jaffles too!
Hi Rick, thanks so much for watching and for the beaut feedback. So pleased to hear you are going to try these out, we are sure you will enjoy them. Cheers, Lea and Joe.
Ah, that’s so funny you should ask Rick. My sister asked for 2 as well, just yesterday. He would like to make some more at some stage, perhaps a little later in the year. We will do a post on the community page of our Channel when this happens, so if you have notifications set you’ll receive this. They are the best, all our friends love them. Thanks so much, Lea 😃
Just recently subscribed to your channel guys, loving your content so far, great tips and tricks for sure. Do you use clip on towing mirrors on your 4WD and if you do what brand are they? Cheers, happy camping. ⛺️
Hi Ross, yes clip on, Milenco Aero 4 - the best towing mirrors we’ve had. We purchased from Anaconda, and sometimes they have them on sale. Full price is about $140-$150. Thanks so much for your feedback, that’s great that you are enjoying our videos. Cheers, Lea and Joe 😃
Yes, Clancy’s a bit smaller and has sloping areas, and manoeuvring around amongst the trees could be a little tricky, especially if there are a few groups camped there. However Emu Creek Camping Area would work for you as there is loads more space and it’s not so sloping. There were a couple of caravans at Emu Creek the day we visited. We had perfect weather, and yes the nights were getting a bit chilly on the Range. Thanks for watching Jon and Tracie.
I am on the cusp of moving forward with this same lifestyle looking at buying a jayco ATM 2010 model > It is a massive learning curve for me very grateful for all work that you put into creating this review / Tutorial thank you .
Thanks so much. Yes, it’s a learning curve for sure. Happy to answer any questions you have. Best of luck with your purchase and we’re confident you’ll make lots of memories. Cheers, Lea and Joe.
Oh my gosh. I used to travel to school, then later to work every day in the 70's, 80's & 90's from the Ferny Grove station. Always wanted to know the full story of this. And yes, the ticket office was a small wooden structure that smelled weird. ☺️Thanks.
11.13 standing at the tunnel carn you were standing on top of the tunnel the trail was to the ladys right goes down some stairs to the tunnel under that intersection, the northern end was filled in used as a rubbish dump.
Yes, we did hear the northern end was used as a rubbish dump. We have lived in Moreton Bay for most of our lives and didn’t know about the tunnel at all until researching the branch rail. Hope you enjoyed the video, and thanks so much for watching. Cheers, Lea and Joe.
Good video guys, I also had water coming out to fast around our seat on our unit. What I found is where the pipe meets in the tank to the pump was mixing with air, a simple s/steel hose clamp worked treat. Happy travels
So glad we watched this tonight before going to empty our caravan loo, it's been sitting for 3 weeks oops. I will make sure I don't get to close when I take the lid off lol
OMG guys! We had a friend who left his for a while then decided to empty into his home toilet…he got a nasty surprise, complete with spray over the walls. LOL, off you go and do it now Jon!
@@RoaminWithTheRubes unfortunately Jon has broken his foot so I have to do it. Might leave the lid down and open the vent a little at a time. Yikes maybe I should just throw the whole cassette out and start again lol
Ha ha! No surprises but I (Lea) agree totally with your wife. Yes, they do work well. Thanks so much for watching and glad you enjoyed. Cheers, Lea and Joe
Hi Gaby, so pleased you enjoyed this video. They are a great brand, we’ve owned 2 over an 8 year period, with no problems. Yes, I’ve been leaving it to hubby to empty too…but next camping trip I’m going to take one for team ‘pink’ and have a go. We’ll video this for a bit of fun too LOL 😩🫣
For my family it is our love of cooking with olive oil or fat splatters from meats, etc that causes issues with cooking meals inside and enough dirt clings to the interior to make it not fun to clean. But I do enjoy having the option for a wee sink and a hot drink station, boil an egg, gently heat soup, that kind thing when we can’t cook outside.
Yes, some meals can be challenging to cook inside for sure. The inside option has saved us on many time when the weather has been lousy. And yes, perfect for a quick cuppa. Thanks so much for watching, Lea and Joe.
Hi Tom, no we don’t have one…but have thought about it on many a cold night. It is another item to find a home for. We have sleeping bags rated to minus 5 and these are wonderful, and these have worked well on the nights we’ve had away when it gets down to zero or colder. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers, Lea and Joe.
@@RoaminWithTheRubes thanks! We have -16 bags from Mont, so will be fine sleeping. I was just more thinking about sitting around when we don’t have 240
@@TomWilding1 we just tend to go to bed early LOL. We do sit rugged up rugged up in a blanket some evenings watching a TV series. South western Qld in the middle of winter would have been our coldest locations.
Thanks Rubes. Really enjoyed this. My father"s family were all strewn through the area from Morayfield to Redcliffe to Kobble. Many of the family are part of the historic furniture of Samsonvale/Mt Samson. Well done! Makes me consider doing the rounds with a couple of the cousins, before they fall of the perch, to get their knowledge of the heritage.
Thanks so much for watching, and we're pleased that you enjoyed our video. Wonderful to hear that some family members are still in the region. Yes, if you can drive to some of the locations. Cheers, Lea and Joe.
