This is actually the right way to do this exercise! Don't know why some physiotherapists are asking people to also move their body. I was told to do it exactly like this in order for it to be effective. Its your shoulder that needs to move not the body.

nope.... not supposed to use your shoulder to initiate movement... shoulder needs to be relaxed and movement comes from swaying body

Would love to see a demo. When using your arms to pick things up do you sway your body to move your arms?

@Tony Beecroft it's a decompression exercise for the subacromial space of the shoulder. When you contact muscles like your rotator cuff deltoid etc you naturally compress the joint. Relaxing the joint and swinging from your trunk and chest keep the should relaxed and disengaged.... I didn't mean to be a smart ass. Remember it's not an exercise it's more of a stretch. (Traction) think of it this way....do you contract muscles you are trying to stretch, you relax them.

I’m a PT and I always instructed my patients to sway their body not their shoulders.

If your body is getting some low level soreness afterwards, then it settles within 1 day, then that's ok. If it persists, cease doing the exercise.

Hi I enjoyed your simple but thorough explanation. I have just been diagnosed through ultrasound with bursitis in my left (weaker) shoulder caused by overuse/misuse at the gym. Do you recommend rotator cuff resistance strengthening as a way to get better?

Definitely! Nearly everyone has bursitis on imaging, but this doesn't mean it is 100% the cause of your pain. Strength stabilises the ball in the socket, so the bursa isn't rubbed as much, assuming that for you, this is the painful source.

I've had it for 12+ months, I've been doing resistant band exercise, I find my strength is coming back but pain is the same

Thanks for watching. You could have some other problem in your shoulder, and may need another opinion for a firm diagnosis. Have you seen your local physio for advice?
