Those are really kind words! Thanks you. I think because it takes me time to learn certain concepts, I try to teach with really easy to understand examples, and at a pace that’s easy to follow. Comments like yours motivate to continue making more videos! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@brgphotography Many help videos are done in a perfunctory manner with the thinking we want the briefest possible explanation. I appreciate brevity, but complex software needs a bit more of a real-time ‘let’s do this together’ approach, in your style. I have written technical manuals for many years, getting feedback along the way and seeing where I fail the reader. There’s a high probability of presumption when writing for print and I’ve come to appreciate the few who standout when it comes to communicating. It seems intuitive to you so, follow your instincts for future work.
@artysanmobile thank you very much! That really makes me feel a lot better! I’m sure a lot of the bigger channels, who use money from RU-vid as a main source of income, are probably trying to finesse the algorithm the best they can, and just put out as much content, as quickly as possible. Usually resulting in quickly explain, or oversimplified methods for concepts that should be explained more thoroughly. So I tried to adopt a more opposite approach. Because you’re right. Some of these things just take time to work through. It’s not something that can be explained really quickly. Honestly, I always go in trying to make my explanations as concise, and quick as possible, but they always end up being 20 or30 minutes long. Lol So reading a comment like yours reminds me I don’t have to try to speed through everything just to make a more clickable video. I’m happy to take my time and work through it with the viewer. It can just be a little bit harder these days, with everybody’s attention span being so short.
@@brgphotography It had not become intuitive. I think I’m armed with that now. I know what I want to see and masks were obviously the tool I lacked. Thanks so much.
Thank you very much! I'm glad to see that you are still able to find the video useful, even when reading subtitles! But I actually do want to get better at explaining things a bit slower so it's easier to follow! I really appreciate your comment!
Will these macros only open in Versions Affinity Photo 2 and higher? I keep getting the message "not Affinity files" and it's trying to send them to my old version of Affinity Photo that is still on my computer. If I uninstall my old version of Affinity will my 2.0 version still work without any problems?
That’s strange. These files should work in V2, because that’s actually what I made them in. Have you tried opening them from within Affinity photo? You can import them from a menu in the library, or macro tab. In my other video a made about “my retouching macros,” and show different ways you can import them.
I like this! Thanks for sharing the workflow. PS: The intro was really fun. Which video program did you use? And how did you get these reflections of yourself in the eye in the video?
Thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I just edited it in Final Cut Pro. I just took my footage, and flipped it, made it smaller, then used a shape mask so it’s just in the eye, then change the blend mode (or I think Final Cut calls it the composite mode) to soft light, and lowered the opacity.
Thank you! Yeah, you probably have a lot more options doing it in designer. But it’s nice to know that it can be done in Affinity Photo as well. I’m glad you picked up on that. Thought I would keep the music appropriate 🎶
thank you so much for the video .. I finally understand how to stack photos and use the layer mask a little better ... I wish you would do one on stacks in detail... need in real estate photography. Thanks
@@brgphotography Using the pen tool to select something such as a window and be able to change the window only on a photo to bring more light into it... that along with shooting stacks and adjusting... most people doing these are frustrating because they move so fast and assume too much from the ones watching.
@FredHoffman I see. Actually I almost never use the pen tool to make selections. I usually use the selection brush tool, the use it to make a mask. Maybe I’ll make a video about different ways to make selections. That’s a good idea. Thanks.
@@brgphotography I with you on the selection brush tool except when shooting architectual and the windows or the outside must be exact, it is critical to get the edges spot on.
@FredHoffman that makes a lot of sense. Maybe I’ll make a video about that. Because you can make a selection a number of ways. The pen tool, which unfortunately I’m not that good at 😅, the selection brush tool, luminosity ranges, colors, etc. But, if I remember correctly, once you have your pin Path completed, you should be able to set it as a selection, instead of a path. Then while you have that area selected, any adjustment layer you add, will be automatically masked that selection. Then that way you can make adjustments just in that area. You can also save that selection as a spare alpha channel, so you can reuse that mask at any later time. This is a good topic, and I think I’ll definitely make a video about it.
Man, excellent work! I need now to make a page in my LoupeDeck for this app and add this channel, in case I need to do this type of work, later, thanks.
Thank you very much! I’m really glad to hear that! Yeah, I mainly use affinity photo for portrait retouching, and photo editing, so it does everything I need to do, and more! I also do use it for doing some graphic design, and I’ll actually have a fun video about that coming out soon, and even for that, it works amazingly. Looks like adobe finally has a worthy competitor!
the pro pen is nicer. also having extra tablet on the right of the drawing area is nice - so your hand doesn’t fall off the edge or make you hover over the tablet. also if you have multiple monitors that you want to map to the tablet- it will decrease the useable drawing area per monitor. i generally suggest the force proportions option which for multiple monitors will also reduce the useable drawing space. wish they had a basic tablet w extra tablet to the right since i primarily use it for navigation / as mouse replacement.
Having another tablet is an idea. I’ve been thinking about getting some kind of mat so my wrist isn’t hovering over the desk when using it. Can you use the same pen on two different tablets? I imagine you could.
Hands down the best tutorial out there. 80% of the tutorials you look for don't even consider the fact that you have ZERO prior knowledge into this field.
Thank you very much! I’m really happy to hear that. That’s exactly the audience I was aiming for! People who don’t have any prior knowledge, or experience working with graphic editing apps. I’m really glad to hear you found it useful!
I’m a windows user and I experience affinity photo are very buggy and slow when I try to edit my raw images and has been a problem since version 1. Have reinstalled my pc and this problem stands. Any one else who has that problem? I use a laptop who are suited for photo and video editing.
Sorry to hear that. That sounds frustrating. Outside of looking at the performance settings and setting the RAM usage I don’t really have any other advice. Hopefully another windows user can offer some advice.
When I got into serious photography Affinity was my first real editing software. The learning curve was almost too steep for me and I still struggle. I have a fairly good work flow with it now thanks to what you and others have taught me. I'm not leaving Affinity though. Compared to other programs it lacks AI, an easy user interface, and gimmicky effects but thats exactly why I stay.
I sometimes feel that people get too caught up in new features. Where, I think if you know the basics, and have a good understanding of the software, you only really need a few tools to get the job done. I think I do 90% of my work with probably only 10% of affinity photo’s features. 😂
Thank you! Yeah. I don’t think it actually takes too long to learn the technique and tools of retouching, but learning the reason why, is equally important. I really appreciate your comment!
@rimshot413 to be honest, I started using Affinity 5 or 6 years ago because I didn’t want to pay a subscription to Adobe. Also at the time, I liked that Affinity photo had a quick frequency separation filter so I didn’t have to set it up manually in photoshop. Affinity photo also had masks built into their adjustment layers (didn’t need to create smart objects.) Things may be different now in photoshop as I haven’t used it for over 10 years. But the biggest factor was the money. I bought Affinity photo version 1 for maybe $80 at the time, then bought version 2 for 50% off around $40 (can’t remember.) Either way in the 5 to 6 years I’ve used Affinity photo, I’ve spent less than $150 on in. Using Adobe, I would have spent more the $1,200 in that same amount of time.
@@brgphotography Thank you for that. I run both now, sort of testing. Adobe seems to be more AI driven and AI oriented (object selection is crazy good - most of the time), yet I'd still like e.g. focus stacking more on Affinity. Anyway I guess both can do great, as every tool you'll spend time on learning to use. And yes - in PS still smart objects are the thing :) Last but not lesat - I appreciate a lot your tutorials, you are definitely one of my favorites for both substantive side of your videos as well as the way you pass the information. Thanks for all that!
@rimshot413 thank you very much for the kind words! Yeah, some of the AI features in PS shot look really impressive. Heck, you could probably just use an AI fill to correct overexposed skins tones and not have to go through all the trouble I went through. Lol. But I actually enjoy the problem solving aspect of the retouching process and finding different ways to do things. Maybe Affinity will get some AI features down the road.
Hi there! Well, I’m sure this is only one of the many ways to handle this kind of problem. For me, this is the method that has given me decent results. Ideally I would nail my exposure and lighting and wouldn’t even have to do this. 😅 But I would love to hear how you would tackle this kind of problem. I’m always eager to learn different and better ways to retouch!
Brilliant thank you........ I am now switching from PS to Affinity and getting to grips with how everything works. After watching this one I am now about to work my way through many of your other tutorials 🙂
Thank you very much! If you’re coming from PS, most of the skills are transferable. Honestly when I first started using affinity photo about 6 years ago, there weren’t that many videos on it, so I just watched PS tutorials and figured out how to do the same thing in Affinity. Judging from what I’ve seen, I’d say affinity photo is about 90% as capable of PS is. There are definitely a few things that PS can do that affinity photo doesn’t do yet, but there are also things that affinity photo can do which I think is a bit more efficient than PS. Welcome to Affinity Photo!
@@brgphotography It's looks very similar to PS layout! I've only had Affinity for a couple of days, so I'm still finding my way around it.But lucky for me to find your tutorials this early on 🙂Thank you
Problem that I've noticed is when trying to transform a selection and then flip it. Instead of flipping it in place normally, just like any other software does, it will instead flip it to the other part of canvas if that makes sense, while selection itself stays in place. So the result is freaking frustrating and weird with part of the selected area withing selection, while the other part is cut off on the other side of the canvas.
That’s interesting. I don’t seem to have that problem. When I select an object or a layer, when I click the “flip horizontal” icon at the top (looks like a blue and white triangle) it flips it on its center axis. Staying in place. I can understand what you’re saying, and that sounds frustrating. Maybe there is a setting somewhere to change that behavior? Or it might be a bug.
@@brgphotography Yeah, i've tried looking at the settings, but it's hard when you've no idea what to look for lol (also I'm a long time PS user, so it's hard in some places ). But, I've wrote to customer support, so hopefully there's a solution to this. Hopefully they can at least provide me an older version installation or something if that's actually a bug. Thanks for your kind reply ))
Not a problem! Hope it gets sorted out! It’s always interesting to hear about the different bugs/issues people have, especially when they are so different for everyone.
Wow! Thank you very much! That really makes me happy to hear! Reading comments like this keeps me motivated to continue making videos. Thank you very much for the kind words. 🙏🏼🙏🏼 and I appreciate the subscription!
Thank you for a first-class educational video I have struggled in the past trying to get to grips with masks but you have made it so I can now understand how it all works. Thank you again.
I’m really glad to hear that! Masks also took me awhile to understand, so I wanted to make this video to help people who might be having the same trouble. So I’m really glad to hear you found it easy to understand!
wow I love your description of masks, so easy to understand. I never thought of lowering the flow to make a soft transition, Brilliant. More like this please.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you found it easy to understand. It always helps me to kind of find a “physical” analogy when working digitally. I plan to make more!
