I'm just wondering, if Magik can teleport to the past, why not try to prevent the whole mutant massacre in the first place? I'm sure there's some loophole as to why she can't but just a thought.

Good review. Evidently, this issue was a transformative moment for Buscema, because Stan Lee disliked the results. As JB puts it: "We worked on the plot, Stan and I. I was very, very excited about doing the book. I thought, “This is one job I’m going to get away from the Kirby layouts. I’m going to try something different,” which I did. I think it had a different look about it from the previous stuff I’d been doing. People were congratulating me on this particular issue. Stan tore the book to pieces! He started with the first page: “Well, okay, not bad.” On and on and on. Every second page he ripped to shreds. “This is not good, this should be done this way…” I walked out of that damn office of his; I didn’t know which way was up or down. I was completely demoralized." 8 years later, JB recounts, Stan Lee called him up and said what a great book SS #4 was, and Buscema had to remind Stan that he had scathing criticism for it at the time. JB went back to doing more Jack Kirby style layouts after that, apparently, his confidence was shaken a bit. But, to your point, it was a great effort by both men, and I agree, Stan Lee did contribute significantly to the whole Marvel enterprise and creative vision. Where people have a problem is he took perhaps more credit than was fair, mainly because he'd get extra cash for "writing". Lee wrote the actual final dialogues and narration, but part of the writing is the visual staging and sequence of images, and overall plots. Jack Kirby would write initial dialogue in the margins (in pencil) and then Stan Lee would improve them, and take all the credit as "writer", which isn't really reflective of the working dynamic. Probably should have been "co-writer/editor". All that aside, ya, John Buscema is a total art hero, and he didn't even like comic books. LOL. I agree, also, that "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" is one of the best books on drawing, not just on drawing comics, but on drawing in general.

Nothing came out of this idea.
I get why you don't like the healing lady subplot, but I can't do anything about just admiring this panel where Johnny is kissing her. It's beautifully drawn and the colors look good.
Re: Jim Shooter being petty to the X-Men - yeah, I think he didn't really like the concept of the series. His "Harbinger" series from Valiant (a good one, I genuinely recommend it for anyone to read) is basically an X-Men series but with "What if Professor Xavier was actually evil?" twist. But it's much better and more than that. Again, recommend.
Usually an album (or tome in french) is as tall or a little taller than a marvel/dc omnibus (this album you sit with is smaller than the original published in france and most european countries) - cinebooks (for a lot of their titles) shrink it down, even tho it still can feel oversized for an american reader i guess

This was a GREAT issue ! I love how diabolical The Kingpin is here, although Fisk wanted Foggy DEAD to frame Matt! And that page with Matt and Karen embracing each other. Wow!
