Super interesting video. As a fan of the Japanese language and culture, this also really helped to make sense of, or *tie together* the at first glance seemingly unrelated meanings of the kanji '和'.

I still can't understand why food and clothes use 和 and 洋 to differentiate if they are Japanese or Western, but for music and film they use 邦楽 and 邦画 to denote them being Japanese.

The red ghost was like a red camel not a horse
@ferretsensei
@ferretsensei Месяц назад
Indeed, but I imagine 19th century Arizonians had little to no experience seeing camels so I can understand why they might call it a horse. Incidentally, there used to be camelid species native to North America, which were more closely related to Llamas and Alpacas, but they went extinct thousands of years ago. They are a kind of sagebrush that no other animals can digest. When the camel corps was introduced to this area, the camels started eating it, restarting a long broken food chain!

Can this system be used for a duodecimal and a sexagesimal system? What is a sub base? Can there be a sexagesimal system with a duodecimal sub base system?
@ferretsensei
@ferretsensei Месяц назад
In this case, the sub-base of 5 just means the horizontal strokes are increments of 5 rather than keeping vertical strokes going on the bottom. So you don't switch to a new register until you reach 20, but you can count 1's and 5's in different parts of the same character. In other cultures this was done with a dot. I suppose if you did a duodecimal version of this, the sub-base would be 3?? So every group of 3 would be counted up at the top with a maximum of 3 horizontal strokes (equalling 9) and then up to 2 vertical strokes until you start over again at 12. If you wanted the sub base to be 6, you'd need up to 5 vertical strokes, so the balance between top and bottom would be sorta weird. A sub base of 3 seems better for aesthetics...

I'd recommend playing either the remakes of the first two gens or, a controversial opinion, but I think the let's go games on switch removes a lot of the tedium associated with those game. While young me would have hated it, grown up me loved it. I already crunch spread sheets all day long, no need to do it again at home. Thereby it can't compensate for small curves on a road, that looks straigt to the human eye? Was this actually used as navigation, or was it just a cool trinket owned for prestige? Anyways very cool device, I should go read about it. Great video.
