hey so i’m confused, why would i do this instead of just adding effects to the individual pads i want an effect on? is it so i can add multiple pads with all the same effect? just curious, thank you
Good question. Yes. This method allows you to use the same effect/insert across multiple pads/samples. This will also free some of your system resources so that you can use CPU where it matters most. Let me know if this helps. Thank you for the question and for supporting the channel😀!
I read the announcement. My hopes are that they refine/restructure the manufacturing of the device (Katana 2.0 if you will). It’s a shame. I really like using this for practice. Thank you for the update 😀.
Very nice. Despite Mpc 3 being on the way I have a quick question...is there a down side to route the entire drum program to a submix? For hip hop and that type of stuff. Thank you and best regards from Portugal
Good question. No. I wouldn’t say that there is a downside. If anything you can apply a dynamics utility to your percussive arrangement. I usually use buss compression on drum submixes but at this point you can use what ever you like. Routing your drums to submixes affords you the ability to control elements that you may have otherwise overlooked. Take a look at the buss compressor section of this video when you have the chance: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P6f3YGcLyk4.htmlsi=Z9ZG2yVh4sYiCtwI Thank you so much for question and for supporting the channel 😀.
A little tip for the vintage compressor or really any drum compression is to use a slower attack and medium to fast release so you can keeo the transients and also avoid losing the punchiness from the compressor. Keep it at 50% dry/wet and use a 4:1 ratio like you did and youll get a punchy fat sound with the transients so you dont lose any short hits like hihats, kick transients and all that jazz. Otherwise this was a great tutorial and helped me level up my understanding of the MPC compressors. I was trying to find anything that could tell me which one was most like the 1176 and this didnt directly answer my question but it was great and useful info nonetheless. Appreciate it man! You got a sub out of me for sure.
Thank you so much. You are absolutely right about the vintage compressor. Using the method that you recommended will definitely add character and punch to percussive arrangements. An 1176/FET emulation would be a cool addition to the MPC insert lineup. I didn’t see anything that that mimics an FET but I’ll take a look again. I researched the AIR limiter but it appears to be a standard mastering limiter. I’ll experiment with the settings and let you know if anything comes about this. Thank you so much for supporting the channel 😀.
I have a question. Can you just use usb on mpc for audio instead of using audio cables on jx08? I'm trying to play the jx08 audio thru mpc live 2 speakers. I could have sworn one day I hooked up just usb and it play a sound thru the mpc
Very good question. Yes you can but the line inputs of the MPC become inert. The JX-08 essentially becomes the audio interface. I believe it also replaces the MPC line output source as well. I’m curious as to how MPC 3 will go about handling this because I like the idea of audio over USB but I also like the flexibility of selecting which input/output source I would like to use on a per instance/track basis. Let me know if this helps. Thank you for the excellent question 😀!
Thank you! The DCO envelope (in my opinion) is a pretty cool feature. I definitely recommend using it when suitable. Again, thank you for the compliment and thank you for supporting the channel😀..
I’ve been told. I’m considering some entry level voiceover work…we’ll see how that goes. Thank you for the compliment and thank you for supporting the channel 😀.
Legend. I’ve dabbled in this and gotten a basic kick/snare/hat/tom kit set up. Haven’t managed a good clap yet. Cheers for your videos. You’re the only person on YT that has a great grasp on this machine and glad you inspired me to get one.
Thanks you for the compliment. I’m glad that I was able to spark your interest. Let me know when you pick one up. Maybe I should be on the Roland’s payroll as a marketer 😂. Thank you for supporting the channel my friend!!!
Im glad that this helped. I use a couple of Moog semi-modular units as well (Mother-32 and DFAM). I’m really enjoying sampling the random occurrences. Thank you for the comment and for supporting the channel!!!
Good question. To my knowledge, the JD-08 does not have a modulation matrix that allows for this. I do know that you can sync LFO(s) and implement certain triggers but I don’t believe you can select alternate destinations. I will let you know if I happen to discover something to the contrary. Thank you the excellent question and for supporting the channel 😀.
I’m glad that this was of use to you. Compression can tricky. Too little and your sound looses definition, too much and it everything gets squashed. The worst part is that you don’t realize it until it’s too late. Thank you for support my friend😀.
Thanks! I’ve found the architecture of this synth a bit hard to wrap my head around, it is awesome though once you begin to understand it and make your own patches
I agree. It is perplexing initially but it’s not so bad once you develop a workflow. I’m typically a pattern oriented patch designer. I start with a blank sequence and build a patch(s) around it. Thank you so much for tuning in and supporting the channel 😀. My apologies for the delayed response.
I have it and at least my jd08 assigns the last slider/button/knob I touched to each palette. You can also see from your video at the end when you touch any slider that in reality they don't modify the filter, phaser, lfo but they change the waveforms of the lfo. Now I don't know if there is an internal setting or not to set a different parameter on each palette but I don't think so. let's hope Roland updates the firmware because it would be much much more interesting to change different parameters for each layer instead of just one on all four. so.... greetings from Italy and enjoy music.
You know, I took a look at this and you are absolutely right. Since then I’ve tried to rectify but I keep encountering the same issue. I’m wondering if this is the result of a firmware update. Once I get it working again I will let you know. Thank you for the bringing this to my awareness and thank you for supporting the channel 😀.
Weird question: I resampled my music, cut the sample right at the start point, but when I play it back, it's slightly faster than the master tempo, even though I never touched tempo. Is there a reason you can think of? Appreciate your time and content. Earned a sub.
Use threshold recording. When you resample, increase the sampler volume slider a little (i.e., threshold level), press the sampler record button and then play what you want to resample. The sampler will start resampling only when it receives input that reaches the threshold level you set. The start point should be perfect, with no edits required, and the resampled audio should be in perfect time when played back.
I agree with @brianpinkin6218 unless there is something causing an inadvertent warping of the samples playback tempo. There is an option for sample warping in the sample editor section. Is this still giving you issues? Hopefully MPC 3 remedies this. I’m looking forward to the update. In the meantime, I will attempt a few fixes on my end. I’ll keep you posted. Thank you for the question and sorry it took a while to respond. Thank you for the support 😀.
Sorry for the delay. Thank you so much for the question and for showing support😀. Let me know if this helps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dd9Aof3qg-E.htmlsi=3_nfOYUNLTrvTbq
Thank you so much! The one that I use is not available at the moment but I did find this one. Let me know what you think. Again, thank you for supporting the channel!😀 www.amazon.com/Capacitive-Ballpoint-Penyeah-Stylus-Writing-Devices-Black/dp/B07GF8FQRK/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?crid=27CFUVV0KDE3F&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.QkWwkJtEgaZrNNY8a7uDnGT75bNdDZKyxzvYkDguIWKeKfBIVNNA31m7EjqQCMwPObttRh0tsddO2B4F1RYrUI3TS5sOsGMu1S_Mk4dVaqTCnQv9E1gnQT60vJyv97tn1U85yvTJ3qduVB6VpP0AgBN8aL7bFTYMkWDPsaEjrEqUzzAc2bFLXzpZnehbE9ExnaS3voNgLMejAEUJIiS8IA.I1b_tcoeNIuMHRVpzUR3XVqxmntx6vwLtgnX2KUdu-8&dib_tag=se&keywords=capacitive+stylus+pen&qid=1718207721&sprefix=capcitiv%2Caps%2C105&sr=8-7
Yes. I was impressed with it once I finally got around to trying it. It has become my go-to practice tool of choice. Thank you for the comment and for supporting the channel!😀.
Just bought one of these, this is awesome! Thanks for these tutorials; I'm new to sound synthesis. Could you do a tutorial on how to make a clap or snare sound as well? Also how would I make a G funk/DJ quick type bass? Hopefully I don't need a moog, cause I don't got one lol. There aren't many sound design tuts with this machine so I'm trying my best to figure it out.
Most definitely. This unit actually lends itself well to percussive patches. I’ve experimented with a few in the past. Let me see what I can do. Hopefully I can get a video up sooner than later. Thank you for the request and for supporting the channel😀.
I just uploaded this one. I took out a moment to expand on percussive sound design theory. 😀 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZDZZd3mW4ic.htmlsi=zVfkkmg1r1EDHx1_
Bro! You are an absolute GEM! Especially when it comes to the MPC!!!!! I have the MPC Key 37 and there's just no tutorials for it and I'm finding out that any and all tutorials for the MPC One and Live are the ones that apply to the Key 37. It would've been nice if someone, erh...anyone would explain that. I'm a complete MPC virgin and the Key 37 is my very first MPC ever. You videos are so helpful and pretty much the only ones that reach out to me and I'm so thankful to you for that! You wouldn't by any chance have any tutorials on how to record vocals and create complete songs with vocals would you? I'm so lost when it comes to recording vocals on the Key 37. Like, am I supposed to put the tracks in the midi tab, and sequence them to the audio tab, etc? I wish I could explain what I'm asking but I don't even know how to explain it myself. LOL. Thank you Bro!
You're welcome. My apologies for the delayed response. I would be more than happy to help with this. The latest version of the MPC firmware allows you to connect an audio interface via USB. I would definitely go this route. Make sure the audio interface has a phantom power switch (assuming you are using a condenser mic). The MPC should recognize the device. After that, I would connect my mic and record the vocal as an audio track. I've been toying with the idea of making a video on this topic. Stay tuned. I may create a video on how I record external audio. Thank you so much for the question.😀
@@dncmusic8070 No worries on the delay! It's been 3 days since you replied so I'm guilty as well. LOL. I've already got the audio interface and with phantom since my mic requires phantom. It's laying down the vocals that I'm having a hard time with. When I put the tracks in Song Mode, I'll try to lay down vocals but the "tracks," in the sequencing mute out. For example, I've got a verse in a sequence, but when I record the vocals, the drums would mute out, or the electric piano track would mute out, and then it loops. Man, it's hard to explain when I don't even know how to describe it. LOL! I'm going to go ahead a make a video of what I'm talking about, and upload it on RU-vid and I'll tag you on it. That would be easier for the both of us. LOLOL!! Thanks Brother!!!
Sorry for the delayed response. Yes you can. I typically run the arpeggiator and the sequence on separate parts of the unit. Part A for the sequence and part B for the arpeggiator (or vice-versa). This allows you to run effects and modulations independent of their respective layers/parts. Does this help? Let me know and thank you for the question 😀!
You’re welcome. I’m glad that this helped. Thanks for supporting the channel! You can find one here: www.amazon.com/Stylus-Compatible-Samsung-Chromebook-Screens/dp/B08Q7L85X2/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?crid=3ALFBY596KKF0&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.rx-IHFs3dusW9lZ6uixR8fvrqYLGmv-FUbqdWX57jyXJkn3R5KwtyhLuTlpwu6KDOiBWNOR7gav4UJA91PdSyREqZPW2L_yQQYX6MESsZqAaA45YnOJ9eAIQcDEqjjVmUifFbE9geoA2uAQWymYHlv70TkMVrotUYcIzEV-qF8TFybcLiucDVVgQKSpXwPVlyLaYc9IxeVEQiTghr2A_3A.185pAiAhmK80xUMCQniR7cTA2jbIt0z7Lj804FRrmcw&dib_tag=se&keywords=touch+screen+stylus&qid=1713980220&sprefix=touch+screen+st%2Caps%2C171&sr=8-2-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfYXRm&psc=1
You were the top result when searching Microfreak Mod Matrix, and that’s good because this video is great. No wasted time, straight simple to the point and easy to follow. Appreciate the guide since I just got the MF, and its interface is different than what I’m used to.
One query…when I set up my sends and returns I noticed the audio is louder, do I have to turn down the audio from track in the programme mix? When I do that I loose my EQ and other settings…any suggestions?
Sorry for the delay my friend. It sounds like you are hearing a combination of the original signal and the auxiliary send/ return signal. If you don’t mind my asking, what type of effect are you applying to the send/return insert? To answer your question, keep the original signal at the desired level. If you are using reverb on the the send/return insert (for instance), make sure the insert is set to full it’s wet setting (no dry signal). This may help reduce the loudness. Let me know if this helps. 😀
@@dncmusic8070 thanks for getting back to me!🙏🏾 so I tried the process again and turned up my wet signal (send one) 100% using reverb to test the theory. I had one sample chopped up on multiple pads which I implemented the send process. I then used the volume in returns window to control the overall amount of send/wet signal reverb. That seems to have worked but it’s a slight variation to your tutorial. Your thoughts?🙏🏾
Excellent. That’s pretty much the idea. This method should work. It will definitely cut back on the CPU load and you can route more pads to the Send/Return aux. How does the mix sound so far? Let me know.
Excellent question. Not exactly. This is a form of parallel processing. You are hearing a combination of the direct output and the effected output. By raising the send/return fader you are applying more of the effected signal into your mix. This allows for more subtle insert effects as opposed to full saturation. It also allows you to run several pads into the same insert. This prevents you from having to apply the same insert to each individual pad (which can deplete your system resources). Let me know if this helps. Thank you for the question😀!
Oh no. This is the downside of software and computer based production. There’s always some update or OS limitation. I will let you know if I come across a workaround. Thank you for tuning in my friend!
Thank you for tuning in. I’m glad that this is helping you with your goals. I agree with you. The MPC has excellent signal processing capabilities once you take a peek under the hood. My hope is to walk you guys through my full mixing process. I will keep you posted. Again, thank you for the support😀!
Wow these are bingable. The way you explain synths really gets through to me and I’m having a much better time with my jd-08 now. Not sure if you talk about it in another video but as of now I’m a little confused about the palette faders. Sometimes I’ll mess with one and it just causes pure chaos and ear rapes me to the point where I’m almost scared to use them
My apologies for the delay. Excellent question. As a matter of fact I did. Take a look at this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d2ABtGQT7a0.htmlsi=v228-rN5a70CCA7o
You’re right. I would really like to be able to apply automation to a submix. Hopefully this will be included in a future firmware update. I usually use resampling as a workaround. I’ll create a video on this technique soon. Thank you for supporting the channel my friend😀!
