Awesome video, I’ve been doing similar for the past few years. I totally agree about finding that sweet spot between price and fun. I usually splurge for my main resort where I spend a week with ski in/out access, great amenities. The rest of the time it’s really up to best value, (with a hot tub) even some of the fun hostels for quick stays. I find my percentages are similar to yours…except when my daughter comes out for her week…things seem to get nicer, and we need to add ice cream to the budget. 😂
I just found y'all and find your videos so helpful! Which videos would you guide me toward to pick our next resort? We've only been to Winter Park and Purgatory (as well as a few places in Maine) but looking for good family mountains. Specifically that might be good for an 8 year old who is a confident but sometimes out of control blue run kid. We found Winter Park a bit more predicable in a good way .. Perg felt like we'd be on a good blue and it would dump into something harder without any warning which caught our son several times.
Steamboat might be a good choice. We are planning to post that video guide next week. Are you looking to stay in Colorado? Snowmass could also be a good option.
Fun video. But you can't lump Sunshine, Lake Louise and Norquay together just because they're in the same national park. They are three different resorts. The views are not the same. And each one is worthy of its own spot on your list.
Lifties are vital for all of us to enjoy resort riding, and they are some of the best riders on the mountains. Furthermore, you guys sound a bit elitist with the ”ski jokes.” Leave that BS for the Trump’ers.
I dropped into Fuez bowl on a bluebird day as a much younger man 15 years ago, got the effervescence of surfing in a sea of diamonds, then cased into the front of my snowboard at the valley floor.
It’s about safety and saving $$ for us, but not a specific snowboarding advantage. We carry avy gear in certain types of terrain and snacks/lunch, extra layers, and camera gear.
Breck and Keystone over Fantasy Ridge?! Those hikes are through a paved parking lot-even with added altitude-compared to Fantasy (and over to Honeycomb Peak)? FR is a zone where if the rider falls, the rider could become severely injured or worse. And if one ventures on to No Man’s, one slip and that’s a hundred plus foot parting gift. Breck and Keystone just do not even come close to the level of tech and gnarliness to that of, say Fantasy Ridge-again even with the added altitude of the aforementioned resorts, there is just no comparison.
I wouldn’t try to ski the whole mountain in one day if you are trying to avoid flat traverses. Ski the Nevada side or the California side if you’re only there for a single day. Definitely avoid the Galaxy lift as it’s incredibly slow, and the runs are disappointing. Even worse then the flat traverses are the days when the gondola and lifts are shut down due to high winds.
Watched this last year I thought I'll never be able to make a video as good as yours. Mine are coming out differently, but I'm happy I watched this again. I'd like to get some on mountain interview of myself footage. I'm guessing you researched and had a plan before you visited. Anyhow, great stuff! I'm getting better...ha.
We don’t go in with much of a plan besides trying to cover all the terrain. Then the video is based more on how our experience went. That usually means a ton of footage that I have to edit into a watchable 5 minutes. Are you filming yourself the whole time? That is a challenge of its own. Keep it up!
Thanks, I use a GoPro 12, 360 and a gimbal. I bought a wireless lav' microphone, but haven't used it yet. It is impressive the way you edit it all together. I just started writing scripts on the last few. For whatever reason I've decided I want to get better at reading a teleprompter...ha. I have a ton more footage from last winter in Colorado. I think this winter I'm going to come up with a good plan before I visit the ski resorts. I appreciate your insight. Think I'm just nervous to go full RU-vidr on the mountain, but I like you and your wife on the mountain speaking. Thanks again!
We are thinking to go in Mid December this year for a week, my husband grow up snowboarding me and our daughter just started 2 years ago and I would say we are still beginners, what area in Colorado would you recommend? Some people said try Veil or Winter park for better snow especially in December.
Mid December can be hit or miss each snow year but all the resorts will be making snow if needed so there will be coverage on beginner and intermediate runs. Winter Park is a solid choice as they are higher elevation and have decent snow by then. It’s large enough to spend a week there. If you want to split the week up, try winter park then Copper. The 4-day ikon session pass would cover both resorts if you go before Dec 26 (black out dates end of Dec). The alternative trip would be Keystone and then you could split it up and also visit Breckenridge or Vail. All 3 are on the epic pass and somewhat close to each other. Based on today’s pricing you can get a 5-day epic pass for similar price as the 4-day ikon session.
Where are you visiting from? As first timers are you looking for lessons or just easy beginner terrain along with a decent village for food/ activities?
I assume you’re driving up from TX. If you want the big resort experience then Breckenridge and Keystone are good options. Plenty of beginner terrain and lots of activities to do besides skiing. For something off the beaten path one idea is angel fire New Mexico, then Taos NM, and then drive up to purgatory near Durango CO. More mountain driving but less crowded, still decent resorts for beginners.
Most if not all offer lessons. Where are you thinking of going? Pricing usually depends on the resort. Aspen is going to be more expensive than Keystone for example for a lesson.
I just was there for 2 days in March 2024... this review is spot on... I will never go back to Heavenly... they aren't exaggerating that on powder days half your time will be spent skating/walking flat expanses. Terrain park is an afterthought for Heavenly 100%. Not to mention that it started snowing on our second day while going to get lunch and the place had no covered area to eat... the only spots that do are at the farthest most ends of the resort. Like I said, this review is so spot on. P.S. Gondola has been broken for all of 2024, so yeah, Heavenly blows.
Only ever snowboarded in Europe, and next year I’m going to venture further afield. This looks perfect. When is the best time to go for someone that is a keen snowboarder and his wife that doesn’t ski or snowboard? Good mixture of sun and snow.
We went a bit late for the ideal snow but lucked out with a good snow storm. I’d say aim for mid February to early March for best conditions. There are new great hotels for spa, apres, and other activities off the slopes. Montage!
