This is amazing. Just subbed. Thank you for being one of the first people to really show their bag of tricks in an upfront, badass, no frills kind of way. The resampling trick may be old and well known, but I had simply no idea until this video. I also really appreciate the flow and pacing you provide, just like the softer rounded textures you use as examples. I HAVE A DUMB QUESTION: ...So the one thing that really befuddles me, coming from decades of DAW work and the professional mixer career I'm in, is how the heck did you decide to go with a launchpad instead of a keyboard like, I don't know, an Arturia Keystep or whatever. What is it about the launchpad? Also, what mind-boggles me is, how do you know what note you're playing?
I wish I had a cooler answer for you, but really I was just never good enough to play an actual keyboard! And the layout of the grid just makes more sense to me. It’s also pretty versatile, since it’s also useful for drum pads and as a Live controller.
blah blah blah all the neckbeard platitudes in the intro. just get to reviewing the product already! I thought we were done with the intro but then you also came out with a "drop test". seriously ridiculous. I couldn't sit thru this.
Would have been good to show people how you set it up, I have one and it can get a little complicated. The demo was great but people need to look under the hood.
If you’re ok loading your samples via computer, the Volca Sample and Elektron Model:Samples are probably the simplest devices available today that are also pretty capable. As far as devices that actually sample, I can’t think of anything any simpler than the K.O. II. Most of its competitors are significantly more complex (and capable).
It's so funny, I mostly use the ko2 as a drum sequencer because the tr8s, digitakt thingies have way too much menu diving for live gigs with more instruments attached. Seeing how communities like yours are making synths polyphonic and creating new textured sounds feels awesome. If this would be possible with live re-sampling together with some latch functionality - OmG
This is amazing! Thank you for these videos, I can’t stop watching them - learning so much. Would you ever consider doing a tutorial from scratch on the KOII? I’d pay for that - from setting up to using each knob and feature. I’d be your first student! I’ve been wanting to learn how to play and make my own music. I’m an 80’s baby, big fan of electronic synthesizer music and such. Seriously- reach out if that would ever be a possibility. Thank you! Subscribed!
About using the macros for controlling modulation depths, the modulation wheel is a good alternative, and always find that's what I use instead of the macro wheels. For the 9 assignable modulation destinations, you can assign the LFO and cycling envelope total modulation amounts/range, or assign any other node on the modulation matrix to a custom destination and then control the amount of additional modulation you want to apply to that node with the wheel. The only problem with this technique is the other node you assign as the custom destination either has to be one of the default destinations, or has to be on your current page of custom destinations, you can't jump to another custom destination page during the assignment. You have to do some planning on how you'll lay out your custom destinations, depending on how you set up the wheel as a modulator, but it works. Most of my patches are a 2-in-1 where I use the wheel strictly to and adjust regular parameters like a macro, but also modulation amounts all on one wheel. It works pretty well!
Now ..❤ i know why i got a 133ko2 … because i got allready a Mini-Freak & since 3 years a Microfreak …😅😅😅 i just learn to use the Ko2 I got it at 13.9.24 …
You had me hooked within 55 seconds. I'm really tired of reviews where people just make the craziest sounds with gear. As a pop producer I'm almost always using synths in a more restrained way and so I want to hear how these things sound with "normal" pathes
This is great! Had mine for about a year new in the box. Just started playing with it. I’m a bass player learning keys so I just hooked it up two days ago and WOW the possibilities! I’ve got a lot to learn but synth is money well spent!
Please do more. Your videos are made of what we really need to see (compared to all the other narcissistic bitching, whining and griping rubbish we usually get served).
A lot of people compare Teenage Engineering to apple, But I think it's more the lego of the music gear world. You look at these plastic bricks, and you think, "there's no way they're THAT expensive, right?" and then you learn what they're ACTUAL use case is and you're like, 'wait, this is actually tight af and really creative!'
It really was a cool video. Thank you for this. I have a lot of analog synths and I have a KO2 too, but I didn’t even think about sampling my synthesizers.
Fantastic! Thank you for the generous patch collection. I am quite proficient in Pigments and starting to branch not Minifreak, so this was very interesting.
Mate, this review is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Fantastic. Production quality is fabulous, just the explanation and audio/visuals is exactly what so many reviews on YT are missing for this kind of thing. Keep it up! Subscribed immediately.
holy shit dude, rewatched your mavis and hologram and you should be a top tier synthtuber, damnable algo. hope you review more stuf fin the future and please stay critical
‘The latest digital offerings have cumbersome interfaces and lack analogue character… ‘ Hydrasynth - no and no. Extraordinarily well conceived as an architecture interface. Sounds really good to me too. Can very easily substitute for an analogue. I’m sure the minifreak is stunning too…
I cover this in detail in my “How To Prep Your K.O. II Samples for Lo-Fi Grit” video, but the quick answer is spreading a sample over more time (aka, pitching/slowing it down) effectively reduces the sample rate.
