Standard procedure in icing conditions. As per the Boeing operations manual, part of the icing conditions procedure is to hold the brakes, initially spool the thrust levers to achieve 40~45% N1, once they are confirmed stable they will then be spooled up to an additional 70% N1 then we'll start the stopwatch in the flightdeck and start timing for 30 seconds. In that time we have to monitor the engine paramaters to ensure that the engines are stable, and that there are no abnormal indications or exceedences are breached and this is due to ice potentially forming on the fanblades and spinners, falling off and being injested into the engines. Once 30 seconds is up and the engines are still stable, that's when we release the brakes and finally give full take off thrust. Hope that all makes sense :)
